Ok, I went there a couple times in their first couple days of both soft and official opening weekend and I have to say that I do LOVE the retro cool renovations, the special local decor touches and the general ambiance provided by the open-concept room with a mix of seating options, a respectable alternative/alt-country playlist and an ever-friendly staff. Altho they do not yet have skee-ball and other gaming options like the other locations, there are some dart boards and a retro bubble hockey game! The real applause should directed to the beer selections and the down-to-a-science technology inherent to the extensive pour your own / pay-by-the-ounce tap wall. The only glitch was that there was no wine on tap, but that, and the glass-rinsing mechanism, are apparently still in the works. The best part of the set up though is probably the variety - in addition to 2 wines, they will be looking to keep 2 ciders, 2 meads and a hard seltzer or 2, as well as the 15 or so beer taps representing the gamut of styles. I can also say that at least initially, the choices were well thought out and include a couple not found elsewhere locally. In addition to a digital (UnTappd) beer board in front, the thing that may be most helpful for those that prefer to not "do the math", above each tap someone has chalked in a style listing with the equivalent cost (10 or 16-oz depending on style) per glass. I see a good number of whiskey options and am told they have a nice cocktail list too. The ownership/management team behind this 4th central Illinois franchise location seem to be great people and are already entertaining expansion plans. As a fan of what they've done here downtown, hopefully they can avoid the curse(s) the previous establishments ran into at this locale and their focused expedient work will be repaid. I will bump them up from 3 to 4 because it shows some great potential. This is basically one of those tap bars that you "pay as you go". This is a great way to get to try all kinds of beers. The only downside with Pour Bros is that a lot of the beer seemed the same. In other words, some of the beers were similar. Some of the taps were also a little wonky, but the workers were super helpful. This kind of place can get expensive fast, but we were able to keep it under about $10 a person which was a super good deal. This is another neat idea for Champaign! I heard about the pour as you go bars in Chicago, but never got around to going to them. It was nice to have one here in Champaign. They have a lot of different beers to pour and some wine and spirits as well. I love the interior design and everything is clean (Hopefully forever!) Staff was also helpful and friendly! We come here nearly every Sunday I get whiskey, she tries several things from the 28 taps on the wall. The wait staff is great. There's lots of games, including skeeball. This is a pour-your-own craft beer place, which is totally fun. You get a little card that you can swipe on all the taps, and then it is charged at the end of the night. I found the beers to be a bit expensive, but it's fun to pour whatever you want, and you don't need to add tip so it evens out. This is a brand new beer bar in downtown Champaign, I believe there is one other location in Peoria. The build out is nice, and it is in a great old building. Though saying all that, the build out is a bit sterile, with metal bar stools that look like they come from IKEA, with plenty of TV's and the place is open and loud. A bar on one side, tables scattered and bar games on the other side. There are about 15 beer taps, maybe a few more with some wine taps as well. The hole shtick here is a long tap wall that is self service, you pour your own beer and pay by the ounce. The manager is around when there are not a lot of other people to deal with and he is happy to explain how it works. Though I can't imagine this is very efficient when there are a lot of people. First you have to start a tab at the bar, then they give you a card you have to keep with you. Use that card to activate the taps and pour as much as you want. It sounds a little more difficult than it is, though it is a bit awkward. For one if several people are sharing a tab, then the card gets paced around, or you can have multiple cards per tab..though that can get confusing or lost. You cannot order on a tab at the bar without the card. My other issue with the self pour taps is that when the taps foam up you are paying for the extra spillage. The manager is a nice guy, but service otherwise is pretty nonexistent, and they give you a tip line when closing out your tab (which I have no idea how much would be a reasonable tip here). So overall just odd and awkward. Selection is pretty good, with locals from Riggs and Blind Pig. Also some larger regionals from Chicago like Revolution or Two Brothers. Overall a good selection, but there are better in the downtown area. An interesting concept but I just prefer other options around town, and actually like good bartenders. Along with the awkwardness, probably not going to be one of my regular stops when visiting the area. read more
