Hubers is a townie bar, to be sure, but the best kind of townie bar: the staff is friendly, not surly, patient with noobs and the drinks are generous and cheap. They pour massive shots in tumbler glasses and offer big steins of domestic drafts for less than what a pint runs in Downtown Champaign. They serve food, which is stellar in its value, if not its uniqueness. Simple pub grub done well is the order of the day. They have a surprising variety of surprisingly good thin-crust personal pizzas for less than $4 and all the expected fried things. Popcorn is free and they will make more just for you. If I was serious about throwing darts, this is where I would come, as it is apparent they take it seriously at Hubers: there is an entire room dedicated solely to this and about 4 dozen trophies. There is ample parking in the rear, as well as a tiny semi-enclosed smoking area that is only a little bit less depressing than the smoking tanks at the Atlanta Airport. The decor inside is nothing special, but upon close inspection you will find echoes of the historic grocery that inhabited the structure in years past. An old-fashioned candy counter is at the front of the store and still in use. Hubers is a good place to watch sports, as while they do not have the biggest or newest TVs, they sure have a lot of them and are not shy about letting you tune in whatever suits you. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is they do not have very many of the "fancy" microbrews or imports that just about every place in Chambana stocks these days, and any that they do carry are likely old. This is a liquor and domestic beer joint. Also, like any neighborhood/townie bar, there is an alkie or two that may pass through, and this is not the place to meet chicks, or at least not he kind of chicks that you want to brag about on the Internet.

As part of…read moreour tradition, we also stop by the local Brothers if there's one nearby, many Big Ten campuses have them. From what I learned, this Brothers recently moved to a new location. The space is open, warm, and clean. We stopped in several times between Friday and Saturday. On Friday during the day, it was pretty quiet, but by that night the crowd picked up. It's your classic no-frills setup, beer and bar food, but the bartenders were friendly and attentive. The manager even managed to find some pickle juice for a pickleback shot, which was a nice touch. The music choices were... interesting, but not a dealbreaker. We came back Saturday morning before the game, and surprisingly it wasn't packed at all, very different from other Brothers locations we've visited. We grabbed a few drinks and walked to the game. When we passed by at halftime, the place was much busier, but they were charging a cover, which was new for us. Turns out, cover charges seem to be the norm in Champaign. Overall, a solid stop, friendly staff, good atmosphere, and a fun part of our Big Ten bar tour.

I have to say after reading the three reviews on the Bistro that I agree with two of them. I urge…read moreanyone reading these reviews to disregard John's comments as much as possible. I think that Jan is one hell of a business woman. She offers great drink specials and seems to be constantly striving to make her customers happy. She does not have to offer drink specials every night. She does not have to have Bingo Night every Thursday night and give out free shots to the winners. I am more of a person that sits back and watches how people behave in order to make my first impressions. As the matter of a fact I can be a shy person unless I get to know someone pretty well. I have only spoken to Jan on a few occasions, and therefore, I can provide an unbiased opinion about the Bistro. From what I have seen, Jan makes the enviornment comfortable and accepting, and she does not have a greedy bone in her body, unlike most business owners. In addition, she has made my drinks before and she puts just as much alcohol in the drinks if not more than the bartenders do. Most business owners would be stingy with the alcohol and try to get a bigger return on his or her investment. In addition, she had the ingenious idea to have karaoke on Thursday after bingo, and I swear the bar is more crowded on Thursday nights than it is on the weekend. In addition, the bartenders are very nice there, especially Tiffany and Selena (sorry if i misspelled your name). The bartenders and Jan always make you feel like you are welcome. It does not matter if you are a regular, rich, poor, middle of the road, straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transexual. They will treat you like you are the only customer in the bar irregardless of the size of your usual tip. They all practice respect for the individual, which is an important component in maintaining and securing future loyal clientele. So if you are debating on whether or not to come into the Bistro, I am telling you that if you do, you will not regret it. Please remember to tip your bartenders becuase they deserve it and it's the right thing to do. They are trying to make a living just like everyone else!!! Signed, Chuck, a happy customer

It's just noise. Reminds me of a techno club circa early 2000s. Bartenders (there were two) umm yeah. You can keep them. I could only stand about an hour and a half of this place. I feel sad for the LGBT community here. Saturday night and the best you have to offer is this group of unfriendly people. From the bartenders to the "DJ" upstairs. I ll never go back. No reason to. Just stay home. Seriously. I can see why it's dead on a Saturday night.
