We stopped into Sun Singer for a lunch break during a business trip, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our time in the area. It's a wonderfully unique space--part wine and spirits shop, part lively daytime dining room--with a steady flow of customers browsing bottles alongside a full bar and tables occupied by ladies who lunch and retirees enjoying a relaxed weekday afternoon. It is a surprisingly chic space for Champaign. The dining room was busy enough that there would have been a wait for a table, but we were perfectly happy at the bar. Our bartender was very friendly and welcoming, even while clearly managing a high volume of guests in what felt like a short-staffed moment. Despite that, service remained warm and attentive. We shared the traditional fondue, which was generously portioned and stayed hot for an impressively long time thanks to their setup--ideal for lingering over conversation. We both enjoyed wine pairings, and I especially loved the Winter Warmer Knob Creek cider: cozy, well-balanced, and a standout choice, particularly for anyone who appreciates Knob Creek. Sun Singer feels like an upscale family restaurant. Its niche is a full step above Applebees and a full step below fine dining. The food has the quality of a stock photo. I mean that partly because the presentation is strong and consistent. But also because it is missing a distinctive quality of its own. I ordered the lobster roll with a house salad and kids cheeseburger with fries. The cheeseburger came on a generic potato bun, while the lobster was served on a buttered and toasted roll which had the flavor and texture of freezer-aisle Texas Toast. The lobster meat was good but overwhelmed by the mayonnaise that covered it. The salad was large and fresh without any surprises. My major hangup with the restaurant is its prices. The entrees cost about 20% more than I'm inclined to pay for this quality of food. I have eaten lobster rolls on hot dog buns at roadside windows that cost less and were more memorable than this one. I suspect there are corners of the menu that warrant the premium. The restaurant is set in a wine shop so parts of the wine list and the charcuterie may do the trick. To the restaurant's credit, the service was excellent. The waiter was friendly and -- after an initial hiccup -- attentive. For some patrons the service may be exactly what the premium on prices is for. read more

Have you ever been to a place where everything was amazing and the variety was surprising for a mid-size restaurant? Sun Singer is one of those all too rare finds. From their soups, anti-pasti "small" plates to sandwiches, it was stupendous! They don't serve entrees until 4 pm, and being there too early, we couldn't try them ...YET. But we will soon! Be prepared, though, their "small plates" are not small. The have BYO (Build Your Own) charcuterie trays with around 5-6 different cheeses, and 5-6 meats that you can choose from. One of these not-so-small plates and soup could easily be a full meal! Also part of this wonderland is a nicely-sized Wine and Spirits section that has a little bit of everything. I was looking primarily for cotes-du Rhônes and they had one of my favorite vintners: Guigal. If you are a wine aficionado, you should spend some time browsing. They are not as big as Sokolin, but they have some Premières and Grands Crus mixed in with the others. It was well-worth the time!! read more

Yay, caught Oyster Week! I had a taste for some chargrilled oysters after a recent trip to Louisiana. The chargrilled oysters here aren't the best I've had... they seemed a little lacking so I asked for more garlic herb butter, meh... Now the oyster Bienville = simply delicious! It's my favorite and a showstopper for sure! The flavors are all so perfect I could probably eat a dozen on my own! I also had the lobster roll with truffle fries, also quite tasty! Pro tip: drizzle some of that garlic herb butter on the lobster! This place has a lot of options so I will be back just to try out other menu items and of course for the oysters Bienville next time they are having oyster week! The service is good, but it took A LONG time to receive our orders, not sure what happened there. I don't recall hearing music, but that would be nice to have some good tunes in the background. We tried the salted caramel ice cream and it was Divine!!! I'll definitely order that again! Oh and have a cup of coffee, the flavor is also quite nice! read more

This cafe style restaurant is one of our favorites in the area. The decor is bright and open, and the leather chairs in the dining area are padded and comfortable. There is an area near the bar with small tables that are a bit less comfy. Outdoor seating is shaded and quaint as well. It's nice to have choices, and they have always been accommodating. Now onto the food...yes and yes please! Every single dish we have tried there has met our expectations. They like to take simple dishes and add a bit of special flair. (Like their grownup grilled cheese). Staff is super friendly (mostly). (Just recently, 2025 there is a new server, a woman who looks to be in her 60's who doesn't seem to be enjoying her job. We always hope we aren't seated in her section. Doesn't smile or seem to connect with customers.)...but other than our experience with her, we have always enjoyed stellar service there. We have been going to Sun Singer for years. It is a great, local spot for good, reliable food and drinks. I was disappointed last time we went in because I had my heart set on ordering the Wimpy Burger, which to me could have been labeled *the* best burger in C-U, arguably. But, they took it off the menu. Harumph! I get it, restaurants need to change things up sometimes, but do they? So disappointing. Best thing to order that I think is underrated? The Pot Roast Nachos. Share it - order a beer, get lots of napkins, and throw guilt right out the window. Dig into that plate of nacho-y goodness and thank me later! To die for. Stay away from: their soups - blech! Not house-made, the soups are not the best, order a side salad if you want a starter, or one of their fantastic appetizers, or a cheese plate, or even the chili! Pass on the soup, imho. Cocktails are mediocre. Wine is fantastic! Beer selection is good. Desserts will wow you. The bread pudding - YUM! The outdoor seating is stellar and makes the entire experience spectacular, and the vibe inside makes for dining for two, or with a whole group so much FUN! Go! Sun Singer is like an old friend, who never lets you down, except with cheeseburgers, but we forgive them. I've always liked Sunsinger -- great food and a really solid wine selection. It's a place I genuinely enjoy coming back to. The only thing I feel is lacking a bit is the ambiance. A small partition to separate the bar area from the front door would make a big difference, and some faux candles or low table lighting would really help add warmth and glow. Especially in the main dining room, it feels a bit too bright, which takes away from what could otherwise be a very cozy, elevated experience. Overall, still a great spot -- just a few ambiance tweaks away from being exceptional. read more

Made a second visit this week. Driving thru to Madison, WI and wanted a good meal. Looked at the menu, so many good choices. Decided to split the Cobb salad and get a margarita flat bread. Both were delicious. Cobb came piled high with all the fixings and the flat bread was made with superb ingredients. Tomatoes were tasty, basil was fresh and fresh mozzarella was plentiful. Definitely made a good choice. Highly recommend this can't miss restaurant. Attentive service and friendly staff. Definitely five star. read more

The wait to get out food was a bit long, but it was honestly very crowded so I don't really mind. The Host was very quick to get us seated and greet us as well. Our waitress was very sweet, and although she accidentally took my order down wrong, she gave me a complimentary lemonade as I waited and comped our sodas. (I would check the carbonation levels, they were pretty flat) The food was absolutely delicious, I was able to take some home and enjoy it the next day. The truffle fries are AMAZING, they are so crispy, perfectly cooked, and pair so well with the lobster rolls. The lobster rolls themselves were also stellar. I felt they were lacking some acidity, so the lemon and the garlic aioli in the side were perfect. I also stole my date's pickle and ate a bit of that as well. The service is very kind and friendly, they would always hold the door open for us even when we insisted that they didn't need to. I would definitely mark this down as a place to visit and return. read more

We fell in love with Sun Singer and it has always been a favorite. They have new chef, who, bless his or her heart, cannot cook. The last few times we have had dinner, it has been disappointing. I am a fan of their Oyster Week menu, but the Oyster Stew has been served in several different permutations, none of which resembles New England Oyster Stew. Their menu favorite of Basque cheesecake comes out over worked and dry. Is it really necessary to serve a Waygu burger? Please just give a burger with beef from Ole Time Deli. Service and wine list is still stellar, but not enough if the food is no longer enjoyable. read more

Came here with a friend to catch up on an impromptu Monday night and had a great experience. Our waiter was very attentive, the service was fast, and the food was tasty. We ordered different items and both were delicious! My only slight complaint is that we were sat in a busier area - towards the wine shoppers and where people would walk through. However, we didn't make a reservation so the dining room may have been more full. Otherwise, everything was fantastic. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Club and Truffle Fries and my friend ordered the Cheese Fondue as her meal because it is so delicious. We were excited to see that there are many seasonal drinks on the menu, both were absolutely delicious and pretty! Been coming to Sun Singer for years now for special occasions. Some of my faves from the menu are the LOBSTER ROLLS and their TRUFFLE FRIES. This is a MUST-TRY! Their truffle fries and the garlic aioli are better than some of the dt Chicago/New York restaurant truffle fries that I have tried. Some days, I have the craziest cravings for these truffle fries. I would also highly recommend the Seared Scallop. The amalgamation of this dish is impeccable in every way; the risotto, the asparagus, and the scallops are all cooked to perfection. The bacon jam is such a unique touch to tie the dish together! We have also ordered the Lingunie Alfredo, which comes with massive portion size but were not sure if $4.5 to add bacon was worth it at all. The sauce was more liquidy than I would have liked, but overall a solid pasta option in the CU area. I am not sure if they do any birthday/anniversary celebrations because one of my friends, the server, brought us a small confection. But when I came in another time, there wasn't anything (but maybe they stopped offering it, who knows!) They also have an extensive wine list and oyster weeks, which are worth checking out!! We enjoyed a delightful lunch with family and everyone enjoyed their tasty meal and the friendly service. I had the Private Club sandwich with a side salad. The club sandwich was fantastic with a creative mix of ham, bacon, cheese and thinly sliced apples and a chipotle aioli sauce. The side salad was a large portion- even as a side. The Cobb salad garnered lots of praise (again, ample portions). Even the "Whimpy" burger was more than Mom could finish for lunch. Jared, the waiter, was extremely attentive and cordial. I heard so many things about this place, especially since they used to sponsor Ebertfest. Looking pretty good, my buddy and I decided to check this place out to see how good it was. While the food was great, it wasn't what we expected. I was prepared for this to be a bit of an upscale place. Nope, its literally a bunch of tables in the middle of what can be described as a fancy Binny's. No issue with that, but the pricing, pictures, and description make this sound like it is a super fancy place. It is not. I went with a Riesling from Alsace as my drink. This being a wine bar place, I was excited about it. Instead, it was only a so so glass of wine. It actually might have been a little too cold for the wine. I also tried to get another glass of Bordeaux, but they were out of it. They had a "close" substitute that wasn't really the same thing. I was a little disappointed with the wine here. Luckily, the food was actually very good. I went with the prime rib dinner special and glad I did! It was cooked well and had that perfect crust on the outside. The knife they gave me could have used a sharpening as I had a bit of a workout getting it cut open. The potatoes were surprisingly excellent. My buddy got a seafood risotto which he greatly enjoyed. The only glaring downsides are the prices and service. The prices here are pretty high, especially for Champaign. Because of this, I was expecting a little better service. Not that our guy was bad, but we barely saw him and did not seem to know alot about the wines. However, we greatly enjoyed our food so we were happy to come! I am not sure if we will be back since we were two dudes down there for football and Ebertfest, but its nice to have an option. read more

I returned to the hostess stand and asked if anyone realized we had been seated and were waiting. Beverages were served, we ordered appetizer and sandwiches. I asked for sweetener. I waited. . . Then got back up and retrieved sweetener myself. The server returned and said the kitchen burned our crab cakes and they were remaking them. I iterate that we are on a lunch schedule and short on time. I asked that he bring to go containers and the check when the food came out. The crab cakes were delicious.
