However, I spoke to a young-ish sounding woman on the phone this morning, an employee who I'd talked with before. She probably didn't intend to sound so annoyed an impatient when she called me back, but she most certainly did. Her tone was kind of cold and irritable, which only made me cry harder than I'd already been crying. I felt like I was being given a sharp scolding from some cranky manager at the DMV. I was calling for an update on my mother's cremation, as I was hoping to be present when it happens because, though she's gone, I don't want my mother to go through this all alone. This is an incredibly painful time for me, and I'm navigating it as best as I can. I'm flying back home tomorrow, so it's important to me to figure out the arrangements soon. If it isn't possible for me to be there, I understand. I know there is a certain order and protocol that needs to be followed, but this funeral home employee kept repeating things like, "As I told you yesterday" and "As I already mentioned in our prior conversation," sounding more like a passive aggressive email than a compassionate funeral home employee. All I'm saying is she could've been nicer and more empathetic under the circumstances. Maybe she was just having a bad day, but she works at a funeral home, for goodness sakes. I apologize if I annoyed her, but my mother is gone and I'm feeling sad and lost. She should be used to handling calls from confused, grieving people. Please be kind and shown a little more compassion and patience to your grieving clients. Also, I left a message requesting information about writing an obituary for my mother and nobody ever got back to me about that. That's all. Thank you.

Cedar Grove Cemetery - Laying Ms. Pinkie to her Eternal Rest

As we came upon a cemetery, I was surprised when the hearse kept past the huge towering gateway. I asked my husband what was going on as we continued around the block to a modest chain link fence. "Oh," he says, "that was the white cemetery, we're going to the black cemetery." I was floored. Excuse me? Segregated cemeteries in 2005? Well, Ms. Pinkie (aka Callie Mae http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=turner&GScid=33184&GRid=11705230&) is resting peacefully under the shade of a beautiful tree, in the "black" cemetery. We drove around until we found the grave between two pecan trees (which was nice since my grandmother loved pecans when she was alive). As we were standing by the family plot, I noticed a stray dog walking along the fence as if the cemetery was his home. I also did not see a building or anyplace for someone to work there, which makes me wonder if they ever close the gate. We put our flowers on the grave, and left my grandmother at her final resting place. Hopefully they will continue to keep the grounds clean.
