I sent Chris Cloutier a poster for minimal repair; he said he would charge $150. I paid and sent him the poster in early May. I didn't hear back from him until August, when I had to contact him to find out the status of the poster. He said he would send me pictures before mailing it. THAT NEVER HAPPENED-so essentially I paid for a service for which I do not know the results until I receive the poster. I had also made arrangements for him to use my FedEx account to return the poster for me. HE TOOK THE LIBERTY OF ADDING A REQUIRED SIGNATURE (that I have to pay extra for) WITHOUT MY AUTHORIZATION. I work really long hours and I am not at home to give the required signature. So I had to go to a local Kinkos/FedEx and make new arrangement for the poster to be re-routed to and left there since this location is open until 10PM. I called Chris twice before I got a call back. He left a voice mail, so I called him back. When I spoke to Chris I started to explain what I had to do because he added a "required signature" without my authorization and charged it to my FedEx account. He asked me "So what is the purpose of this call?!" When I started to ask why he thought it was ok to add an unauthorized signature to my account and delivery, he interrupted me and said "FUCK YOU!" and hung up on me. So much for friendly customer service. I was always respectful and patient... AND I am willing to share ALL our email exchanges with anyone that is interested. I do not recommend this arrogant jerk. I wouldn't trust him to repair a business card. No one deserves to be spoken to in this matter. read more

Looking to get a recently purchased artwork cleaned up, I was impressed with Posterfix's website which was a treasure of information as well as an interesting portfolio of projects so I decided to have it (poster/ lithograph) restored. It was a 1950's piece that was rare and desirable, but had water damage and wear, as well as having been mounted on a board. Chris responded immediately to my emails and I appreciated his direct interaction throughout the project. I decided to proceed with a restoration without having the piece removed from the board because of the risk. Chris and his team are stellar - enthusiastic and personally interested in doing a great job. I found Posterfix through online searches when I needed a 1930s auto show poster mounted on linen backing. The poster spent decades stored in a basement and had lots of tears along the edges as well as some slight water staining. I mainly wanted the poster mounted so that it wouldn't deteriorate further, and so that I could frame it. I sent Chris an email and he got back to me right away to explain the process and with instructions for sending him the poster. After he'd received it and had a chance to look at it, he got back in touch with options for treatments he could perform on it and estimates for each. We agreed to mounting and conservation of the edges, and I paid the agreed upon amount through paypal. He estimated it would take a month or two. It ended up taking about two and a half months, but this was in November and December, so holidays were probably a factor. I got the poster back two weeks ago (after an earlier email from Chris letting me know it was done and on its way), and all I can say is WOW! I am amazed at how good it looks - so much better than I imagined - and I didn't even have him bleach the staining. I can't wait to get it framed and start showing it off in my home. My wife sent Chris Cloutier of PosterFix a rare poster (Revenge of the Jedi) for restoration. It took months, and numerous emails, before he returned it. When we got it back, it was in worse shape than when we sent it in. He used water-based markers to touch up the image (basically coloring it in with a Magic Marker) and improperly mounted it on cloth backing. This resulted in fine cracks throughout the surface of the poster, glue splotches on the front of the poster, roller marks, and creases. Attempts to resolve this with PosterFix failed, as Mr. Cloutier never responded to emails. A Better Business Bureau complaint failed to yield results (either a refund or a proper re-restoration of the poster). In order to salvage the poster, I had to send it to another restorer, who was able to repair most of the damage that PosterFix did... but not all. read more

BEWARE! I had Posterfix (Chris) do a large format poster for me many years ago. He did a fine job then. In January I got another one and contacted him for a quote. He responded immediately. I was travelling so the poster did not get to him that week and he sent me reminders. When I got back I paid his PayPal invoice and shipped him the poster. He never responded back until I placed a dispute with PayPal on day 44 (1 day prior to the dispute deadline), and he did reverse the charges. Unfortunately he never returned what was a collector item large format French Movie Poster. It is now over two months. He is not responding to emails and does not respond to voicemail. He is a thief, scoundrel and terrible business person. If anyone has suggestions on how I can get my poster back I would appreciate it. read more

I had some lobby cards restored and the backing and paper fills were done well, but the art work is very poor. It looks like it was done by an elementary schooler. Im bummed because they are valuable cards and I'm sending them off to get done somewhere else properly. Hoping they can be saved. read more

Really impressive! I brought a poster to Chris for restoration. It had extensive water damage and rips and a few holes but I loved the poster and wanted to give it a shot. Ok, now that I finally have the poster back in my hands I can relate my whole sorry experience at the hands of Posterfix without fear of retribution. I journeyed out to the Brooklyn Navy Yards on October 5th of last year and met Chris Cloutier. Seems like a perfectly affable individual in person. Nothing to start alarm bells ringing. We chatted a bit and I presented my poster. He remarked that it was in good condition and also mentioned that it had been a slow week so he was glad of the business. He sent me a Paypal invoice which I paid while in his shop, $300 to back and $100 to ship via Fedex to Australia. I waited a month and on November 6th sent the following email; "Hi Chris, How're things? I'm just touching base to see how things are going with the Island of the Fish People backing. Can't wait to see it." He wrote back saying, "Hi leslie, I have it ready to back mnext- i was delayed for 3 weeks because we lost the use of water here. but its fixed now. i may be able to ship this posters in about a week, chris" Waited two weeks and wrote on 24th November, "Hi Chris, Just wanted to see if you've managed to get this one done yet." No reply. Another week and a half, 5th December, "Hi Chris, I haven't had a response to my last email. If you could let me know how things are progressing it'd be appreciated." No reply. Left a couple of voicemails and after the busyness of the Christmas period, sent another email on Jan 3rd, "Hi Chris, I haven't had any response to any of my emails and voicemails. Can you please let me know what is going on with this job?" No reply. Figuring I wasn't going to get a reply or my poster at this point I enlisted the help of my cousin's wife who works in a law firm in Manhattan.One of her colleagues sent a letter to Chris. I'm not too sure what the contents of the letter were but it was sufficient to be able to get him on the phone with the attorney within a few days. According to the attorney he said he was sorry, that he was having medical problems, that the poster was 80% done and would ship express on Monday 20th January. He also promised he would get in touch with me. On the 18th January he wrote, "Hello Leslie, work progresses on the posters. should ship early next week.chris cloutier." 20th January comes and goes. On the 1st February I write "Hi Chris, Has this shipped yet?" He replies "Hi Leslie,the poster ISLAND OF THE FISH PEOPL is ready to ship and will go out Monday via USPS. Can you confirm your shipping address and phone please? Thanks" Despite having given him all this info when I dropped the poster off in October, I sent it through again. Then silence again. 11th February, "Hi Chris, Do you have a tracking number for this?" No reply. 21st February, "Seriously Chris, are you sending this or planning to try and steal it and my money? I'll give you 72 hours to send me a tracking number for this package or I'll assume the latter is the case and proceed accordingly. I have been more than reasonable in regard to this matter." The next day "Dear Leslie, FED EX INTL ECONOMY Tracking number is 79799453**** being picked up by fed ex today thanks for your patience. Chris" The tracking number turned out to be valid although I didn't really believe it until I opened the packing tube today, 4th March. 5 months from drop off to delivery. So how was it? Well, if I didn't happen to own a few linen backed posters already I might assume this is as good as linen backing gets and resign myself to the flaws. From a few feet back it displays ok but what really bugs me is are the vertical foldlines which are still pretty prominent. They are raised up which I assume is due to lack of burnishing. It's pretty frustrating as this is one of the primary reasons for linen backing in the first place. My Blow Out 2F for example is completely smooth to the touch and you can only see the folds when scrutinizing it up close. Some extra creases have even been introduced along the bottom. Along the upper left hand side, something small was left between canvas and poster. Not sure what exactly but it feels like half a paperclip. Almost tempted to cut it open to find out. In addition there are three thins cuts in the poster now. In conclusion, believe every negative thing you read about Posterfix. It's probably all true. How the guy stays in business without changing his or the business name is anyone's guess. And if you do take a gamble make sure you happen to have a lawyer acquaintance downtown. I have no illusions about how far I'd have gotten without that connection in my back pocket. read more

Sent two posters to Chris Cloutier at Poster Fix. Was told there would be a 3-5 week turn around. Took all of my money up front to insure I would get great care. He kept my poster for 7 MONTHS. 7 MONTHS. I begged him for two months straight to just send them back unfinished afraid he was a thief and was never going to return him. Even worse after almost a year of keeping my posters they came back in worse condition then they went. For someone who was on "how its made" doing linen backing, It looks like my 3 year old son linen backed these posters. I actually had to find another linen backing expert and pay more money to fix the work he did on my posters they came out so horrible. Never, I mean NEVER send your posters to Poster Fix. read more

I have placed two recent orders with Chris over the past 6 months to restore 14 WW1 Bond Posters. Both orders took about 8 to 10 weeks to process. 6 posters in the first order and 8 posters in the second. This guy can work magic!! The condition on many was questionable and all came back looking fantastic. Chris was really good at setting expectations on when the posters would be available and alerting me is the agreed schedule changed. I was not able to find anyone local to linen back my poster. I found Poster Fix online and it seemed that the process they use is what all of the poster backing outfits use - send the poster to them, pay them the fee once they assess the work, get the poster back after the work is completed. Chris did a great job backing my Blazing Saddles poster. The process took a little longer than he had indicated and there were small gaps in communication but overall I am very satisfied with the job he did with my poster. read more

I sent Mr Cloutier a poster worth $500 in fall of 2011. He charged me $300 to linen mount and make minor repairs. He continued to make excuses for delay in returning poster, and then quit responding to Emails. He kept the poster and the money! In essence, he stole the poster and fraudulently charged me for the work. Very upset - looked into pressing charges, but being in a different state, the cost to prosecute would have been prohibitive. read more

I used Posterfix this year for two restoration projects. I received them back several days ago. One was a poster from about 1930 on old paper that was ripped and shredding at the edges. It was in very fragile and deteriorating condition. The other was a lithograph from the 1920's that was already linen backed but had some stains and water damage that I needed cleaned. Chris's work is fabulous. His restoration of the first poster was really magnificent. You have to look hard to find the paper tears and I cannot see many of the edge restorations. The other poster that was cleaned was a less intense job but also beautiful. Before sending the posters, I spoke with Chris over the phone and we discussed the price and procedures. He was very upfront and honest about the length of time it might take and his procedures. During the process, we emailed back and forth several times. I always felt he was easy to communicate with and had a quick response time. I want to give Posterfix a 5* and held back only because it took six months to complete the work and I wanted it before that. I also have not found that to be an unusual length of time for restoration companies. I will use them again read more
