This is an old fashioned, owner operated , thoughtful framing store. We've gotten good help in choosing the appropriate frames for various pieces we've brought there. It's not an inexpensive place , but the workmanship is excellent, and the owner is a pleasant man. They also sell prints and photographs. I am FURIOUS. The day before Xmas I get back a framed diploma I was giving as a gift and the work is SO BAD, so horrendous and so awful there is NO way I can give this as a gift. I would avoid this store at all costs. I had the most apalling experience at PaintBox West Village having been recommended to use this framers for 3 pieces of artwork. The owner of the store was very happy to charge me the full price of $1600 when I handed over my art after selecting the frames. I was told it would take 7 days and while it seemed odd not to take a deposit, I obliged. He told me he would call when the art was ready. 14 days later I had not received a call. I went back to the store and luckily the pieces were ready. I reviewed 2 of the 3 in the store and took them home. When I unpacked the third item, it was clear that the mount was scratched with almost a glue like substance leaving marks around the painting. I subsequently returned them to the store, very understanding that these things happen. The owner assured me he would have it fixed 4 days later and would call me. As before, there was never a call and so I returned once again to the store where I was told that actually my art was yet to be fixed and he would need another 5 days. At this point, the owner has little remorse and seems to laugh at the situation as if my small order was the least of their priorities. I explained that while I appreciate there are delays, I was more shocked by his lack of understanding that there is clearly an imposition to me as a customer. He proceeded to take his license of the wall, slam it on the table in front of me and show me the text that says 'NO REFUNDS NO EXCHANGES.' I was appalled at his level of rudeness at which point I demanded my items immediately and I would reframe elsewhere. He actually grabbed me by the wrist as I tried to pick up the artwork and leave the store. It was quite a shocking experience. Overall, I've learnt my lesson. Never pay the full amount up front when you are leaving valuable art in someone else's possession, especially if they have yet to provide the service. $1600 may not be a lot of money to him as the store owner, but he treated me appallingly, making my purchase seem unimportant and irrelevant for his business. I left with my damaged artwork, having spent $1600 with no offer of even partial compensation for the trouble he had caused me. I will never return to this location and explained to him in person that I would be writing this up on Yelp. A truly awful experience. read more

I am an art world professional and purchased a very nice original lithograph from a reputable auction house. I came here because this shop was top rated with my brand new, straight from the auction and still in the bubble wrap work of art worth thousands. I very carefully unwrapped the work and reviewed the piece with the woman at the counter and confirmed that there was no damage before leaving the work with them for the week to be framed in a too-expensive gilt wood and museum glass frame. Upon picking up my artwork, there was a very apparent tack hole near the face of one of the figures near the center right of the large sheet. When I pointed this out, I was told this was how they received it and they took no responsibility for the damage they incurred. I was furious for the damage to the one-of-a-kind piece that they very clearly caused while in their care, and only asked for a refund of the frame, there own guarantee. The woman cussed me out, clearly evident of the guilt of her fault. So I had gone home with my piece and called back speaking to a man now I presume was the co-owner, who immediately took his associates side despite never seeing the piece or damage in person. I have conclusive images of the before drop off and after, clearly showing the damage that was caused by their sloppy mishandling and yet somehow I'm the one wrong in the situation. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs. They do not deserve their high rating when every drop-off is a gamble of your artworks safety/destruction. What's the point if a guarantee if they do t even honor it? OR necessitate the need for it... Extremely rude people, extremely rude service. And I'm left with a costly damaged piece of art and lousy overpriced frame. read more

I picked up 3 frames today from them. They did an amazing job with all 3. Price is reasonable with a friendly environment. I would have given a full 5 star but the only criticism I have is that I could do with an extra help with carrying all three frames outside as I was carrying a big frame whilst trying to hail a taxi. I understand if they are attending a customer but since no one was there, I wouldn't think it would cause a great hassle to them. But I come from Asia where service is 5 star and I come to learn that we can't expect such service in NY. Regardless, I will definitely go back with more paintings and frames! Note: I wrote a detailed description of my experience 2 months ago and was SHOCKED to see that despite yelp's disclaimer that 'no review can be altered or removed by the store', my negative review was hidden in their "hidden" section at the bottom of the page and was not reflected in this terrible store's clearly false 5 star review (the same rating I used to base my trust in them to handle my very rare and expensive J.J. Audubon lithograph painting which they damaged) **************** After carefully reviewing the condition of my very rare and expensive work of art in person, noting the immaculate condition (having brought directly to them from the auction house in thick bubble wrap and hard cardboard portfolio) this place's careless employees punctured my piece with a hole right through the middle (through the mylar plastic I had the piece wrapped in as well for extra precaution). Despite this very obvious damage on their part, the owner avoided my calls for two weeks leaving me to talk to his very rude employees. Further, as expected, he denied all responsibility for the damage claiming it to be my fault despite my detailed exam with his employee who likely caused the damage herself and denied all responsibility. The owner offered no proper compensation whatsoever (not even a partial refund), offering only after a long debate to refund my money if I returned the ($250) frame completely, leaving me still at a great loss with my damaged work of art. Extremely rude people. Extremely terrible service. Avoid this place and go somewhere else. read more
