Wanted to reframe a piece that had been removed and shipped, and brought to Allerton with a Groupon. Never felt that my piece was treated differently with the discount. Was patient and made some great frame recommendations based on my preferences and I'm really pleased with the hardwood we selected. My oversized piece required special order of museum glass and mat board, and there was a slight delay as the original mat was damaged in shipping but they wanted to make sure my piece was perfect (which it is). I used a Groupon coupon worth $200. I brought two similar prints of exactly the same size - 8.5" x 12" and asked for a simple framing to the edge. He quoted $120. During this he: a. Damaged one of my other white prints I wanted a quote for - he had ink on his thumb and picked it up without gloves. b. Insisted I forfeit the remaining value of my Groupon since "it's a one-time use" - I had to argue for 5 minutes so that he would allow me to come back later with another print to frame. When I picked it up, prints were off center - he cut off the top of one of my prints, and framed the other so that it overlapped over an inch at the top of the print. It looked awful, I argued, he said that it was my fault since I requested framing to the edge, and he can't do anything about it "due to Groupon" read more

This place is amazing! I walked in cold off the street with a sacred, antique Buddhist Art piece I brought back from Mynamar. It depicts the life of Buddha hand painted over 100 years ago by monks. There was no way to attach it to hang on the wall, and I thought if just nailing it in but that would have destroyed this valuable work of art. The owner of this shop, stopped what he was doing, found a piece of wood the exact color of the top edges, created a panel, painted, scraped the wood until it was a type of top frame. It was like watching an artist work. He was a perfectionist and I was simply a walk in. He even took out colors and made sure the hole created by attaching the hook to safely hang my artwork was flawlessly colored, measured, cut in exact proportions. Then he was going to just let me walk out, free. I of course tipped him and will from now on bring all my framing needs to Allerton Art and Custom Framing as they are artists in their own right and care about customers like me. They advertise "museum quality custom framing". Now I don't know what museum they are referring to but never in my life have I seen so poorly framed art and such lack of professionalism in a musuem. After spending over $300 on custom framing for a vintage map I was pretty happy about I decided to bring them the rest of my framing needs. First, a new matting. I bring my measurements without bringing the original frame nor the art. Granted I screwed up because my measurements were off and I ended having to redo the whole thing. This time I bring the old matting and the art with me and ask for an off-white matting instead of white. The day I'm supposed to pick up my order, the guy opens the package and surprise it's the same thing I had left them, my old matting and my art. Ooops, they forgot to do the work. He apologizes and asks me to come back the following week. Which I do. This time, surprise, it's not the right color. 'Am I sure I'd ask for off-white? Uh, yea, I'm sure, you even showed me different off-whites I was supposed to pick from. Oh okay, no problem, come back next week. Now that's where I should have stopped but silly me asked for more. The following week I finally pick up the finished matting (right color but strangely very thick...the guy had taken upon himself to give me this type rather than the one I had ordered, citing better quality matting..I find it odd that he can take decisions like that without consulting me first but at this point I don't even ask questions anymore) and I also bring a quite expensive piece acquired last year from a well-known up and coming artist. Dumb. I mean I had gotten fairly affordable quotes from Lee's and A.I. Friedman which I should have sticked with. But hey, Allerton is family owned, mom & pops neighborhood shop and I wasn't gonna give them grief for a silly matting. Wrong. I picked my frame, tried to bring the price down a bit and was offered museum quality glass which I thought was very thoughtful as well as great deal for $400. Back home I decide to put my first artwork back into its frame with the new thick matting which I hadn't asked for. Surprise. I find one wave on the paper in the middle of the piece. I'm furious but too too tired to argue. I decide I won't call them, won't tell them. I'm getting sick of them and sick to my stomach thinking about my expensive art still at their shop. I expect the worst. Granted. When it's time to pick it up this is what happened: each of the 4 sides of the frame have a different size border between the frame and the white of my piece, 1/8 of an inch here, a bit more on this side, a bit less on that side, the bottom part is the best: they managed to cut the number of my piece (it's a numbered limited edition)! I will save you the ensuing argument as I'm already getting tired of this review and probably you are too. They redid the job that's for sure, but not without me and another customer in the shop explaining to the owner how to do it so all four sides would be even. One more week of torture waiting to see if i will get my art back and in what condition. Well that's how I got it back: two scratches on the frame, and one dirt patch on the back of it which i had to scrape with my finger nail, oh and not to mention a botched frame cutting job which resulted in paint chipping at the cut site and sligthly but clearly revealing the wood of the frame. The bottom line: great little place to frame an inexpensive poster and for people who are not looking for perfection, people who know exactly what they want and don't require the expertise, the skills or the advice of a professional. The family who runs the place seems nice enough and that too is important.So for for these two reasons they get 2 stars. This is definitely not museum quality framing, and as a matter of fact I wonder if they ever set foot in the Chelsea galleries nearby. I took my next project to A.I. Friedman yesterday and I can only hope I did the right thing. read more

I've taken almost all of my frame repairs and replacements to them, as well as a couple of new framings for some odd-shaped/dimensional work and they've done good work every time. Their own suggestions for styles I usually dispense with, and I can't claim they're the best at understanding what you're trying to go for if you're describing a project. If you need someone to hold your hand through the whole process of selecting frames, mats, etc, this might not be the ideal place. However, if you're comfortable picking out frames, mats, and glasses, they do very good, affordable (I usually find them the same price or slightly cheaper than the other neighborhood framing galleries), and QUICK (when you need it) work. read more
