I've been relying on Dryden Gallery for more more than 25 years, and continue to be delighted with their work. After Mary Dryden passed, I've been thrilled with Mark's keen eye. There are two Marks at Dryden, and the more behind-the-scenes Mark is equally phenomenal. He was framing a special piece for me re-using a frame that I brought in. To avoid harming the artwork as it had to slide into the frame a certain way (and the frame that I was recycling wasn't er...top notch!...my fault!) he AMAZINGLY had a beautiful, high-quality (rejected by someone else or left in their used stock for some reason) frame on hand that was the same size and used that instead. Great staff here. It was sad to hear that their landlord apparently jacked up their rent to an ungodly level (as so many seem to be doing to long time tenants in the past few years) so they'll be moving soon. My husband had been looking at this piece of art in the window for at least a few months that reminded him of me. Seeing the price tag for another work of art near it, we feared how much it would cost. Nevertheless, we went in & asked. Finding the price on this to be reasonable & it being something only a redhead or someone having an intimate relationship with one could appreciate, we decided to buy it. It's now hanging in our house as our first official piece of artwork. We may be returning to see how they measure up with framing considering we have some things that need it. read more

An often underappreciated aspect of artwork, from ordinary posters to original paintings by well-known artists, is the framing. The selection of frames and matting is an art unto itself (not to mention the craftsmanship required for the actual framing process), and Dryden Gallery does an outstanding job of helping select the proper setting for whatever you bring in. I've been going there for (at least) 5 years and all their work has been terrific and has brought out the best in everything from posters, to paintings by unknown artists to an Andy Warhol I recently brought in. read more

I've been going to Dryden for over 30 years. They never disappoint. I no longer live anywhere near their shop but they are still my go-to destination for framing. Over the years I've had many posters framed there and they always come up with a great suggestion. They've even put antique-type frames on some of my post-modern posters and they look fantastic. Never would've occurred to me but they could see it working. I'm still smiling at my Dryden frames years later. They're a class act all the way...they really give old-world service. Their selection is the best I've come across. They have so many beautiful choices...from more antique-looking to modern. They don't do "tacky." I've wandered into other custom-framing shops to take a look but my heart belongs to Dryden...I'll never stray! I hadn't even realized they'd moved and I got a shock last week when I went to the old location with a poster to frame. It was like someone had moved my water dish. Luckily, I found them. I just love the staff here. They are always so kind and helpful. The woman who owns the shop always has very innovative ideas about matching frames with mats and artwork. She has a keen eye for highlighting artwork whilst putting something beautiful around it. If there has ever been an issue, they have taken the frame back and re-worked it to my liking. It's the 1980's and there is a frame shop on 4th Ave. Dryden Gallery. We have work we need framed. We are young and a little confused what to do. We meet our new advisers with insight, enthusiasm and a keen sense of what we wanted to accomplish. When we saw the extraordinarily precise work, we knew we had found 'our place'. The owners were incredibly pleasant and helpful, but when I went to pick up my two posters, the frame was chipped very obviously. When I remarked, they fixed it...with a sharpie. Later, when I got home, I hung them both only to notice that the frame had gaps at two of the corners. They offer great options, but for the price they charge, I wouldn't go back to them. I've had three pieces framed at Dryden over the past year - after going way too long with improvised and/or marginal inherited framing. Each time, I've been just about blown away by the old-school personal service and exceptional results. For people who've been at it this long (40+ years?), the people at Dryden are happy to take time to explore options and clearly delight in helping customers choose exactly the right matting and frame for the piece: size, shape, texture, patina, type of matte or no matte, etc. Each piece I brought in was a different challenge: a poster of Klimt's Adele Bloch-Bauer from Neue Galerie, an ink and wash drawing by an artist friend, a child's crayon drawing of great sentimental value. With framing relatively unfamiliar territory, I really appreciate the gracious extra-mile service. I picked up the childs drawing today... it never would have occurred to me to make the choices we did, so I'm all the more pleased at how perfect (without being precious) it is. This is my local framer, even though I have moved! They are top notch and staffed with folks who can help you pair frames & mattes if that's not your thing. Seven years ago, after unpacking after a move, I brought in three photographs with broken glass in the frames. Mark said normally they promise two weeks but that usually simple glass replacement took about half that time. But when I got home later that same day, Mark called me to say they were all done! "Yeah," he said, "I took the broken glass out just for safety reasons, and it was just easier to finish the job at that point." That's what they're like. read more

They've always been able to make a recommendation that fits the budget I've allocated for a piece. Also, the work is completed within the time specified. On the plus side, the gentlemen who helped us was pleasant and had some good ideas. Unfortunately one of our two pieces came back with some damage on the front of the piece. What's especially frustrating is that this is our Ketubah, so it's not like we can just go out and buy another. We took it back twice and they apparently cannot fix the damage. He also provided the appropriate hanging tools, gave me hanging tips and provided a referral to a hanging service should I need one. Yes, t'is true. I have used Dryden for -- 25 years? The quality of their work is creative, and reasonably priced. Everything they have framed had an extra "special something" with the mat, or with the frame. I have brought pieces that some may scoff at...children's drawings or other pieces important to ME.
