Went with a group of friends. The menu has lots of choices. It's a bit pricey. I got the manicotti. My friend got baked stuffed shrimp with veggies and pastas. We both loved the meal. And the salad was very fresh. I ended up getting the chocolate cake. It was amazing. I had the Riesling to drink. It also was good. If it's a stay at home takeout kind of night the pizza and sides hit the spot. Chicken Parm is a comforting pie, buffalo chicken is a fun Friday night, and the meaty Italian are all so tasty, but you can't go wrong with a basic Mozarella or Margarita pie. Call ahead and pickup was prompt, making this a favorite takeout in our house. Dining in? Come hungry as the pasta dishes and wine are amazing. The takeout staff are friendly enough, and the wait staff take care of you. The classic yet cozy dining room had table linens, always a nice touch. We managed to leave a little room for dessert, which we'll just have to come back for with drinks another time. Here's the good news, Portofino has the very best customer service I've experienced in a very long while. From hostess to waiter to the check, you couldn't ask for better table service and follow up response. Now the uncomfortable news, our main dishes were lacking in eye appeal, flavor and taste. Both dishes didn't have the distinct Italian flavors one would expect when dining in an Italian restaurant. While I gave a 3 Star review the last star is for the exceptional customer service. My wife and I love this place!! This is a family owned and operated restaurant with excellent food. The owner is always around, seating people and checking on everything. The staff all seem to be very happy, you can see they like working there. The inside is beautiful, images of Italy all around help create the perfect setting. The food is always excellent too. We ended up getting dinner here because most places were closed by the time we were heading out. We sat at the bar, thankful that their kitchen was still open. We started with the short rib ravioli and it was to die for. Unfortunately, this was a special but I hope they bring it back often because I've been raving about it to my friends/family. Food is good here. Seems like legit Italian American fare. The bread and oil to start is soooo good. I had the Ribeye with aglio oglio and mixed veggies. The veggies were probably of the frozen variety, but I didn't mind that too much. My friends tried the actual Italian dishes and were raving. We started off with a nice basket of fresh bread, and a cup of mvarinated garlic oil.The oil was very good, but the bread was to salty. We ordered veal parmesan. It came with a salad, and side of pasta. The veal was a huge thick cut piece of meat, but had that cooked in old oil after taste. The large amount of chunky sauce was also overwhelming the meat. The restaurant we planned to eat at was closed so we came across the street to Portofino! What a great find! The fresh baked crusty bread alone would bring me back especially with both deliciously flavored olive oil and butter. Our dishes were all amazing and HUGE - we could eat for two more days on the leftovers! The beet salad had a delicious very light and fruity dressing with Gorgonzola, kalamata olives, apple and a great variety of greens. The fettuccine was out of this world, so creamy with a little smokiness from the bacon and prosciutto... enough for three or four people!! My daughter is the penne a la vodka queen and she'd put this one on the top ten she's ever had, super creamy but still with tonnes of flavor! The veal was fall apart tender and the flavor combination with the mozzarella, prosciutto and sundried tomatoes was perfect with the asparagus and orange sauce. We didn't have room for dessert but the chocolate martini sufficed! Perfection! The service was just right, friendly but not rushed and accurate and knowledgeable!! We were a 6 top and all of us loved our meals: lobster ravioli, veal Marsala, puttanesca, eggplant rollatini, zuppa de peche, and tortellini. What is not to like about Portofino's? From the moment you walk in, you're greeted by a friendly host who seats you with a choice of tables. Our waiter was over in a flash to check in on us and let us know that he'd be taking care of us this evening. He came back for our drink orders, menus, and a quick preview of the evening's specials. We went with friends that we had a little catching up to do and our waiter took this into account and gave us amply time to talk and slowly check out the menu. I had one of the specials that he suggested, the sole over penne pasta covered with a very tasty tomato sauce. The fish was done perfectly, moist, flaky, and seasoned wonderfully. The penne was done just the way I like it, they didn't turn it into mush like so many places do. There was no room for dessert but that didn't stop my wife from getting the Tiramisu. I had a bite or two and can attest it was delicious. We always knew about how good this restaurant is, we've had the take-out pizza several times and we're glad we finally got a chance to eat in the restaurant. read more

Portofino's has been a staple in Berlin Connecticut since I can't remember. They have fantastic Italian food. I personally recommend the mozzarella Carozza it's similar to mozzarella sticks but I don't even like saying similar because they're really not. These are handmade in triangles. The marinara sauce that comes with them is phenomenal. Anything there is extremely yummy. I highly recommend this establishment. read more

You won't find any foo-foofery here. No duck fat or bone marrow or new fangled foodie trends. Nope, not here. What you will find here is old school Italian food in an old school restaurant -think brick and venetian plaster and bronze light fixtures and white linens and black vested servers. Simply put, we had an outstanding experience here. The food was great, the portions were generous, and the pricing structure was very reasonable. We started with a great complimentary bread bowl with chopped garlic and razor thin pepper slices in the dipping oil - that was a nice touch. Good sized dinner salads were included with our entrees, that was terrific, because we see that less and less these days. My mussels marinara appetizer ($5.99) was excellent -great tasting broth and perfect mussels. My calamari fra diavlo over linguine ($15.99) was outrageously good-perfect in every way and a big portion. I ate half of it and that took some effort. My wife's chicken parm with pasta was a giant platter of great tasting comfort food, and at $15.99 (including the salad) was also a great value. Add a couple of coffees and a vanilla crunch cake, and we ate like royalty for $49.95. We had plenty of leftovers for dinner a few days later Yes, it isn't nouveau or chic or the latest and the greatest. But if you like solid traditional Italian food in a sweet old school setting, you'd be hard pressed to beat Portofino's. read more

If you're coming to the restaurant for the first time in the dark, EYES OPEN. It's not incredibly well lit as far as signage, but the parking lot is amply lit and well sized. There are two entrances, one of the bar and a second for the restaurant. The service at the bar was slow, although the room was about half full. I personally opted for forgo waiting and to get a drink at dinner instead. The dining room is classic Italian restaurant. The server was enthusiastic in her quest to extract drink orders from our party, trickling in as they were. My ultimate drink selection, the Veggie Martini, was almost overflowing, and reasonably priced for the amount of alcohol received. As for the taste, OH GOODNESS, THE OVERWHELMING TASTE OF ALCOHOL. If you go for that sort of thing, this is the drink for you. I learned when alcohol is involved, my taste buds would forgo pretending to be healthy, and they reprimanded me for not ordering the Tiramisu Martini I ended up sneaking from a friend. Servicing sides were appropriate, and even though the dining room filled up quickly the service was at a reasonable speed.
