We had a weekend trip last weekend that started with shopping at the Greenwood mall. We decided we wanted to visit Portillo's for lunch. Opposed to how our reviews normally go we have been to Portillo's before, however we did not have the experience we had hoped for and wanted to give it a second chance for real. I ordered the Beef and Cheddar Croissant. It was fantastic as always. I got some au jus on the side to dip in along with some cheese sauce. The jus didn't do a whole lot for the sandwich but the cheese sauce was fantastic. My girlfriend ordered the Chicago Dog. She really enjoyed it and the way it was very briny and tangy with all the pickled items. She also loves tomato's so it was a huge hit for her. She added a little ketchup which I did holler at her for the sin, no worries. We got three separate side items to share. We got basic French Fries, Onion Rings and Chicken Tenders. All three are delicious. The fries are standard crinkle cut fries. Hard to mess those up. The chicken tenders are huge, juicy and very crunchy. The onion rings in my opinion are the best of the three sides we ordered. Dipping the onion rings in the au jus was fantastic. I enjoy the comeback sauce as well with all items and of course the cheese sauce goes with everything. Overall Portillo's the second time around was miles better for us. Got a chili cheese dog, crinkle fries and Dr. Pepper shake. Dog was fairly decent. I understand that is not a Portillos specialty but I am a pretty basic dog guy. Mustard and that is usually it. Fries were good for crinkle cut. The shake had a cherry flavor rather than the date flavor. I was not expecting that but I kind of liked it. Clean and bright was an issue. There were quite a few people behind the counter but not enough to clean tables. It was my first time at a Portillo's, so maybe their drive in is more of a focus. I do not live in a state that has a Portillo's but I would go back to one in Arizona for Spring Training. read more

I LOVE this location and head straight for it every time I come to Indy. While it isnt super easy to access from the highway, I still find it worth it. On the most recent visit I ordered ahead online and was able to pickup at the drive thru window. The staff was helpful and prompt. I got the chopped salad, Chicago dog, Chicago beef, and fries. For dessert you must get the Eclair cake. Everything was fresh and delicious. On previous visits I have gone inside and the dining room was clean. I chose to order ahead because it does take a bit for it to be ready since it is a made to order restaurant. Get your Chicago bites here! read more

Got this as a catering order and almost no one liked the food. Hot dogs were ok at best and the burger patties appear to be the same as Hardee's but burnt to the point of being barely edible. I try not to judge a place based on a catering order, but this was so bad I will not risk a second visit. read more

Well priced, tasty food, fast service, lovely atmosphere (LOVE the interior design of Portillos), so-so layout (ordering is done on the opposite side of where you enter). Loved my Chicago style hotdogs (but it was missing the mustard! Would recommend a visit to any portillos, including this one. Would love to see Portillos brand travel further south but this is as far south as the brand goes as of 2026. read more

This is the third time that we've had a terrible service and subpar food in the same visit. This time, with spending nearly $50 for two people, our experience would've been better at a gas station. One of us ordered a caesar salad which literally has few ingredients; instead, we got a bowl full of lettuce, half an egg, and had to ask for the dressing. When we addressed problems with our order, there was no apology and they couldn't care less. We will absolutely not be visiting this location or probably this restaurant ever again. read more

I really liked visiting Portillo's! It was somewhere that I had heard a lot about but just recently got to try. I ordered the regular Chicago style hot dog minus the sport peppers and I really enjoyed it. I don't think I've ever ordered a hot dog from a restaurant but it was really good, especially with all the toppings. The atmosphere was cool to see all the Indy history on the walls. I think this would be a hit with kids. Of course I tried their chocolate cake as well as the lemon and both were okay but the chocolate was definitely much better. read more

Great food! I try to eat here when visiting the Indianapolis area. If you're looking for fast food/quick service, be sure to give Portillo's a try. First time there and it was OK. Menu a little confusing as you have to know if you want your sandwich dry , somewhat wet, or dunked. The websites says dunked in gravy but I'm assuming it's an jus for the Italian roast beef. My wife ordered a salad. They yelled out my number , it was in a to go sack even though we told them dine in, and my wife's salad was missing. Took another five minutes to get that sorted out. So in summary , not a great experience. Sandwich was dry, order was wrong, but fries were good. Might try them again with lower expectations. read more

This place is too loud and noisy! The fries are inedible and were limp and tasted like rancid grease. I threw them away. I ordered a double cheeseburger, and it is pricey. It was messy. Ever since I experienced the Avon location I've been wanting to visit a Portillo's again for a Chicago Style hot dog. Today I was on my way to the Elite Event at PANA Donuts and wanted to eat lunch before getting near all those donuts. This location is virtually identical to the Avon location in layout, decorations and ambiance. The various stuff decorating the dining rooms is like being in a museum. A lot of history in shown in those photographs. I ordered the Portillo's Beef Hot Dog in the Jumbo size which is not really that big just thicker than a normal sized hot dog. I also ordered an order of Onion Rings which were very crispy and crunchy. I loved the hot dog and everything on it but mine was minus the mustard because I asked for it to be withheld. Portillo's is always great if you enjoy a Chicago style hotdog, they are so yummy and fresh made for you. I've never had anything here that I didn't enjoy. I love their chopped salad as well. We really all enjoy something each time we stop by on a trip. There is an odd smell the last couple times, not sure what it is but it's not pleasant. The food thankfully makes up for it and it's not so bad that you can't enjoy the food and smells from the kitchen. I did like when we could get our own refills rather than take the cups up for a refill at the counter. read more

Definitely one of my favorite fast food spots in Indy. Love their steak sandwich, had mine dipped it has great flavor and just the right spice. We also ordered the classic Chicago dong crispy onion rings (I love these) and a couple beers to wash it down. And of course their famous chocolate cake shake for desert!!! Cheese fries were amazing (obviously), even though I ordered ONE MEAL (2 hot dogs, large fries, cheese sauce, and a drink) they forgot about my two hot dogs. I'm not complaining because It was still amazing. The wait time for it was around 20 minutes, it was crowded though so I get it. I love Portillos! I got a chocolate cake milkshake, chocolate cake, and a chicago dog. The milkshake is perfect. It's one of my favorite treats! The hot dog had a tough casing which was unusual but the bun was pillowy soft. I ordered through the drive through and it was contactless. I have been a lifelong fan of Portillo's but my sandwich last week was very disappointing. The "Italian" beef was well cooked but had NO seasoning whatsoever (Un-spiced Beef). The hot peppers also were low in flavor and low in quantity. Instead of a Italian beef with hot peppers I was served a plain beef with some plain peppers. VERY DISAPPOINTING. Going downhill fast. Ordered a bacon cheeseburger and used the drive thru. Got home and literally it was a very overcooked patty, 2 undercooked bacon strips, on a bun. No cheese, no toppings at all. My brother has been telling me to try Portillo's for months now and I finally stopped in today. I knew to expect Chicago-style street food but I was not expecting The Prohibition-era throwback theme. I loved it! They had me at big band music before I even tried the food. We just picked up food to go but I'd love to dine in and explore more. I had the Italian beef sandwich with sweet peppers and cheese fries. The beef was really tender and flavorful and the bread was just the right amount of chew to stand up to the gravy. The cheese fries were pretty good too. I would definitely order again but there are lots of things on the menu that look delicious. I've heard amazing things about the chocolate cake shake but I was too full after just a sandwich and fries. The staff were friendly too. Love this place! The foods always great and consistent, and the service is quick even when there's tons of folks in there. Make sure to get that beef sandwich dipped with cheese fries. Delicious comfort food in the coolest atmosphere. The Maxwell Street dog is great, though a little heavy on the onions. The rodeo burger, classic Chicago dog, and the chili cheese dog are quite tasty, too! Even the great upbeat swing music sets a mood. Ample parking and a great meal. read more

This Portillo's is like the other Portillo's, but it just so happens to be on the south side of Indy. We went through the drive-thru, and I guess the speaker must have not been working, because there was a person standing in front of the speaker taking everyone's order and payment. This time, I got the whitefish sandwich, which was a good choice because I was feeling in the mood for a fish sandwich, so it all worked out in my favor. The fish sandwich comes on a brioche bun with tartar sauce. The fried fish was hot and the sauce and lettuce were cool, and the whole sandwich was very satisfying. Another thing that was satisfying were the onion rings, which were super crunchy. They are almost too crunchy -- if you're trying to eat with any amount of grace and decorum, don't get the onion rings because everyone around you will be assaulted with the sound of your loud crunching. Very uncouth (and yet very tasty). According to the lady standing in front of the speaker, they "don't have kid-anything," so if you're looking for a kids menu, you can just sod off. There ain't one. You'll need to order food for your child off the regular menu. But they will make their cheeseburgers and hot dogs plain, so that's helpful. read more

Their food is good but burgers are lukewarm (always) at best when you sit to eat every time. The staff are always friendly.
