An odd little place, but good for lunch. We were there mid-afternoon and the place was empty. Our server (one of the owners) was very friendly and attentive. At her suggestions we ordered the piri piri mixed grill to share between the two of us. Although it comes with rice and french fries, we opted for the fries + a salad for a $1.75 upcharge. It also comes with garlic bread and olives. The garlic bread was tasty. The french fries were spot-on: arrived hot from the fryer and were nice and crisp. The salad was also very good, especially considering February in NJ. The lettuce was fresh and crunchy and I didn't see any brown or wilted leavesl. The tomatoes were the sad pale imitation of real tomatoes - I'd use cherry tomatoes or leave them out if I were making a salad this time of year. The only dressing offered was oil and vinegar, which was fine with us. There was plenty of meat on the platter, a good varity of chicken, pork and beef, and it was well-seasoned. However, it was a bit dry and tough (except for the chicken, which was good). I felt that a sauce of some sort on the meat would have improved it a lot. We like Portuguese/Brazilian food a lot. I love Portuguese BBQ and this place is such a good find. I've tried the food several times and have not been disappointed. I usually order the pork ribs or the bbq chicken. It has a really tasty seasoning and the grilled flavor is really good. You absolutely have to get the Portuguese fries! They are thin sliced potatoes and really take the meal to the next level. Awful food at awfully high prices. Ordered a simple meal with beef and rice and fries, the girl behind the counter mumbled quietly something about the price but it wasn't clear. After placing an order for what was believed to be a $12 meal, ended up being over $18. Asked the girl why and she rudely said that she told me earlier that prices will be higher since it's "dinner time". The attitude was unnecessary and the restaurant should have these dinner prices listed next to the regular prices to avoid confusion. On top of the feeling of being ripped off, after receiving the food all that was there were a few small pieces of very tough beef, a ton of rice, and some fries. Stopped in for a quick dinner on Friday night and was looking for something quick and somewhat healthy for dinner. Portchop is located in a busy strip mall but there was plenty of parking when we arrived @6:45 . We were greeted with a wave and a nod from the server , as she was busy at the time taking a phone order( they seem to do a brisk take-out business . We sat ourselves at a really nice wooden table. The food was really good and the meat all had a very grilled taste which I like. Was really bummed about this place, was hoping to have a good Portuguese bbq spot close to home and not have to travel to Elizabeth or Newark to get it. We started with the sausage and garlic shrimp. Typically Portuguese sausage is served cut into "coins" and what we received was a butchered messed (almost ground) with a VERY funky after taste. The garlic shrimp was rubbery and flavorless. I feel like it was pre cooked shrimp.. and again the flavor was terrible. For the main we had the piri piri meat platter and the meat was so cheap tasting we couldn't even eat it, the chicken was so dry it was inedible. The worst part was the price! After tip we spent about $80 -- we could have gone down the street to mar belo had a very delicious meal + sangria for that price. (Although I wanted bbq which is why we didn't ) Will never return. So if you didn't know, Long Branch has a very large ethnic population (Brazilian, Dominican, and Portuguese) so there are a lot of places in this town that are amazing but you'd never thing to stop in. Port Chop BBQ is one of those places. First off, it's BYOB which automatically put this on my radar. I'm into being able to save money and bring a bottle of wine or some beer into places instead of having to pay upcharged bar prices. Secondly, like all Portuguese restaurants, the portions are humongous. I mean that. You won't be able to finish your dish so either plan on sharing or bringing home leftovers. Now what'd I eat? I went last night before going to the movies. My buddy and I split the Portuguese sausage Port Chop style. Basically it's Portuguese sausage in Garlic sauce with Peppers and Onions. It was awesome. We ended up using the bread to scoop up the garlic sauce, it was that good. For main course I had the Chicken Breast and Shrimp in garlic sauce. It was very good. A lot of flavor and the shrimp were cooked right. The rice that came with it was very good and with the hot sauce they give you, it was amazing. My buddy had Fried Pork Steak. Three huge cuts of pork cooked like a chicken fried steak. It was very tender. Neither of us were able to finish all of our food. The total bill was $42, which is insane considering the portions. Port Chop BBQ provides good Brazilian / Portuguese BBQ. I just ran the New Jersey Marathon this past weekend in Long Branch and was drawn to this restaurant while driving home along Route 36. Their sign of a rooster shooting out a flame was so reminiscent of scenes of Godzilla from my childhood, I was amused and had to take a look. The Squab was with me and she did her Yelp due diligence and saw that Port Chop had been rated a 4 (1 review by Matthew R). So we decided to eat here. Mama Pork Chop was with us, making it a party of 3. We followed Matthew R.'s advise and ordered the Shrimp with Garlic Sauce appetizer and used our bread to soak up the sauce. The sauce had a vinegary tang and spiciness whose closest American counterpart would be Buffalo wing sauce (yum). The dish was great. We also ordered the Mixed BBQ Grill entree (chicken, spare rib, beef short ribs, and Portuguese sausage) and the Pork Tip Casserole. The Mixed BBQ was okay, but the sausage was too salty. The beef short ribs (aka kalbi) was good. The pork ribs and chicken (dark meat!) were decent. We ordered the Pork Tip Casserole because a caption next to it said, "We are famous for this". We opted for the half size and it was gigantic! It was flavorful with the potato at the bottom soaking up the sauces and becoming tasty. At this point, I was already too stuffed so I couldn't fully enjoy the dish. Like a true Brazilian / Portuguese establishment, they had Guarana soda. They also accept credit cards, and were very nice about allowing my dog in (inside his carrying case, of course). This used to be my favorite place to go to on my lunch breaks from work. Although, recently, I ordered a half chicken with rice/fries and there was a dead beetle in the middle of my rice. It immediately made me throw out my food and it heavily disappointed me because I really have loved the price and quality of this food in the past. Also, the food usually has some flavor to it but this meal had dry chicken and stale, yellow rice. The fries were even bad. I don't think I'll really ever eat at this place again and it seems as this eatery is going downhill. Coming back from the shore, my boyfriend and I decided to stop somewhere to eat. We were driving by when we noticed a Portuguese BBQ restaurant. Being that he's Portuguese and I'm Brazilian, we decided to give it a try. To start, we ordered the clams in garlic sauce. Usually the clams I've had at Portuguese restaurants are served in a white wine sauce, but they served theirs in a reddish sauce. Even my boyfriend, thought it was a little strange since he had never seen it served like that. The clams were good, even though I do prefer the white wine sauce much more. I ordered one of my favorite dishes at Portuguese restaurants, the Jumbo Shrimp Prawns, as my entrée. They were served with rice and fries, which were good. The prawns on the other hand were good, but not what I was expecting. Usually the prawns have been marinated. However, they actually gave me the sauce on the side. Not to mention, it looked like the same kind of sauce that was served with the clams. I was expecting some kind of kick to the sauce, but again it was missing. They had also overcooked the shrimp a bit. Don't get me wrong, it was still edible, but I was expecting much more. My boyfriend had ordered the Chicken Breast and Shrimp in Garlic Sauce. I didn't get a chance to taste it but he did mention that the Chicken Breast had been overcooked. Again, edible but a little underwhelming. My friend and I eat here not that often (we work about 30 minute away from this place), but we always crave for food from here. We normally get the BBQ chicken and split it 3 ways. Huge portions and the chicken is perfectly cooked. Crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. It is not too saucy and not spicy either. The pork bits casserole was outstanding, as mentioned in other reviews. The prices are very reasonable for the portion size. The owner (co-owner?) is present in the restaurant during lunch time and is very friendly and engaging. I am going to be in this area tonight and I will pick up a BBQ chicken and Shrimp in Garlic sauce for dinner tonight. I am sure it will feed my family of 2 kids, my wife and I. read more

Finally!!! Real good food! I didn't want to cook but I didn't want to eat greasy fast food so I gave Port Chop a call. To my surprise, it was delicious and cooked to perfection! Maybe it's because I am use to the portuguese food made in the Ironbound.. or traveling to portugal and eating it there.. and the Acores Islands.. but.. No. We got here and the place had a couple of people in it. We were seated by the owner I guess... We had the steak with egg and ham. .. The egg was over-cooked. the steak was fatty .. and the sauce.. was definitely Cambell's canned gravy. .THATS NOT how its suppose to be at all. The broth is suppose to be thin and steak-like. NOT thick. The bread was cold.. Not even served warm. the steak bits with shrimp and chorizo was served in a pot. WHAT ? .. no.. Thats not right either... plus it was cooked again in Cambells Gravy sauce. I stopped here today out of the blue and was very pleasantly surprised. The garlic bread and olives to start are amazing. The garlic shrimp was tasty and the chicken and rice was also good. I have to say I have not been home in 12 yrs but this place made me feel right at home fair priced and quality food..unlike in most places in new york were quality has gone out the window service was polite as well. The food was fresh and flavorful nothing over powering each other. The owner was courteous and very much concern with his services but I have to say kindness goes a long way and i will definitely be eating here with family and friends again. Staff is friendly but definitely not the best example of Portuguese food. Meat was ok but the rice not so much. My plantains were just all oil, wish I took a picture before throwing it out. I took one bite and regretted it instantly. The appearance wasn't great either. Noticed it was BYOB friendly, so I went to the liquor store in the same strip mall and bought an inexpensive Portuguese Red Wine. (Liquor store was awful). I had the chorico omelet and my companion had the BBQ chicken. They chicken was as good as any other Portuguese BBQ I've had (I've eaten in many of them in NJ). The rice needed a little more flavor. The bread was excellent. My omelet tasted like the ones I make at home when I but Portuguese sausage (Linguicia). Too bad it was a special o the day and not regularly on the menu. The food was not very good. Definitely overpriced. It wasn't awful, though the rice and beans tasted like it came out of a microwave and was very bland. The service is what I particularly disliked. You get your own drink. The bread is dry, served with no butter. The menu featured pickled veggies with the rice, but it doesn't come with the meal. I asked why, and the waitress gave no reason. Every answer was vague, which was annoying. At the end of the meal, she gives us a check with gratuity automatically added. I looked at the menu and didn't see "gratuity included." I felt that was really tacky, particularly since the food was overpriced. My husband left an additional tip just to be polite, but we both agreed we'll never return.
