The Jersey Shore just got a serious upgrade Moxie Modern is the new it spot in Long Branch. From the moment I walked in, I knew this experience would be unforgettable. If you're a seafood lover, I recommend starting off with the charred octopus or the shrimp fritters.The octopus was tender, smoky and perfectly charred. The shrimp fritters were golden and crispy filled with delicious, juicy shrimp. You also have to try the spicy tuna hand roll. Fresh, silky tuna with a kick of spice, perfectly wrapped in crisp seaweed--this hand roll is a must for sushi lovers. The dry aged cowboy ribeye steak was unbelievable. With every mouthwatering bite I found myself just wanting more. It was honestly one of the best steaks I've ever had. The golden, buttery scallops melted in my mouth with every bite, paired with ultra-creamy goat cheese polenta for the ultimate indulgence. An irresistible dance of flavors made for sharing. We topped off the night with this decadent, warm brownie crowned with silky ice cream--an intimate finish that's both rich and irresistibly smooth. I cannot confirm nor deny that we finished the whole skillet. Service was very attentive and friendly and the atmosphere is upscale and sleek. We really wanted to like this place because the atmosphere was quite nice, but the food and service were a complete letdown. There were very few diners inside and hardly any employees around, yet our waiter barely stopped by our table. He never even checked to see if anyone wanted another drink.The food was incredibly disappointing. We ordered the salmon--which comes with shaved fennel, smashed potato, and a lemon and mustard seed vinaigrette--along with a few other items. Every single main dish, including both the salmon and the scallops, was severely overcooked, completely dry, and lacked any real flavor. We also tried the filet sandwich, but it was mostly just a mountain of bread wrapped around a tiny, sparse amount of meat.For the price and the setting, the execution just isn't there. I absolutely LOVE this spot! Was so excited to check out the newest hotspot in Long Branch, as I am a huge fan of their sister location Charkol in Freehold. Simply did not disappoint! The ambiance is upscale and chic but cozy. The menu offers a nice array of steak, seafood, and other unique offerings. A highlight is definitely the bone marrow mousse which I've never seen anywhere else. The service was excellent and very attentive. Would definitely recommend making a reservation, as it was packed on a Friday night. This is the perfect date night spot for sure and I loved that they have valet option in the back parking lot. read more

We really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately it was a complete letdown. The space itself is beautiful, and the service was good. Drinks were presented nicely, but flavor-wise they were just... fine. We started with the short rib flatbread, which was extremely dry. There were five of us and we left nearly half of it. The charred octopus was also disappointing--lacking flavor and a bit chewy. Mains were where things really fell apart. I ordered the spicy rigatoni, and it honestly tasted like jarred sauce--multiple people at the table tried it and agreed. It reminded me of the sauce inside a pizza roll: cheap and overly processed. I ate only a few bites before giving up. I woke up in the middle of the night with severe heartburn, nausea and stomach pains. Two friends shared a steak ordered medium; it came out well done. Sides were risotto and Brussels sprouts. The Brussels were good, but the risotto was very thick and gluey rather than creamy. The remaining two entrees were gnocchi and chicken Milanese. The gnocchi was bland and barely touched. One friend did say she enjoyed the chicken Milanese, which was the lone bright spot of the night. We don't mind spending money on food--but it needs to be good food. Unfortunately, nothing justified the price point. I wouldn't go back. It's a shame, because the restaurant has a lot of visual appeal and real potential, but the execution just isn't there. read more

I really wanted to love this place after seeing all the Instagram hype, but honestly it was a letdown from start to finish. Yes, the atmosphere looks nice, but it's cramped, and the décor is doing more work than the food. Service was fine, but that's about where the positives end. The summer bruschetta tasted good, but came with four tiny pieces of bread -- completely ridiculous for the amount of toppings. The sushi roll was forgettable at best. The bread basket? One giant, rock-hard piece of over-toasted bread. Not exactly appetizing. For mains, my short rib gnocchi started off promising, but within a few bites it turned into a salty, greasy mess drenched in sauce. My husband's chicken Milanese was the opposite problem -- bland and boring. Just a crunchy piece of chicken with some sliced veggies tossed on the plate. No flavor, no balance. It felt like they can't decide whether to drown food in seasoning or skip it entirely. The only dish we actually enjoyed was the lobster mac and cheese -- but let's be real, it's hard to mess that up. Drinks were another disappointment. We tried three of their "signature" cocktails (Desert Rose, Let's Get Moxied, and Forbidden Fruit) and they were all bitter, unbalanced, and just not enjoyable. Strong, sure -- but strong doesn't mean good. I would've been much happier with a simple mojito or margarita than whatever these were. At the end of the night, it felt like style over substance: overpriced food, underwhelming flavors, and cocktails that look better in pictures than they taste. Definitely not worth the hype or the price tag, and we won't be coming back. read more

The service is abysmal. We made it through our appetizers without getting our drinks (two cocktails, a glass of wine and a beer). The waitress kept saying "they're making your drinks now" as if it should take more than 5 minutes. It was about an hour before the 2 cocktails came, and after an additional delay the waitress told me they were completely out of the kind of wine we ordered and that they were changing the keg on the beer we also ordered. We did finally get a glass of wine (she clearly had no handle on what wine was available) we had to change our beer order because she later told us they were actually out of that kind of beer. The bar is clearly in need of training. It's a mess. They did comp the drinks but I'd rather pay for what should be simple service. The kitchen, however, is not the problem. Except for our Caesar salads coming out incomplete (something seemed off but only after seeing the salads served at the neighboring table did we realize ours weren't finished), - the food was excellent. We had steaks, pork chop and a pasta dish and all were delicious. Since the service and bar are in need of a LOT of improvement, the prices DO NOT align with the product. Perhaps they should reconsider their pricing while they get the service up to snuff. I'm not sure they can hold on like this while the town works on its rebirth. read more

This was the most mediocre "fine dining" restaurant I've perhaps ever experienced. The restaurant was pretty and the bread was fantastic but that's where the positives seem to end. We ordered four appetizers all of which sounded delicious. The arugula salad and brussel sprouts were standard, but the bone marrow mousse was cold. The table-side brûlée was a spectacles but I would've preferred completely warm mousse without the show. The whipped ricotta, while a nice size, tasted like store bought ricotta was scooped onto a plate with some lemon zest. lt was void of flavor and the flavorless crostini didn't help. As for the mains, they all fell very flat. The seafood pasta was so bland, and any ounce of flavor you could taste was not enjoyable. The vodka pasta was spicy but forgettable, and the spring vegetable pasta was dry. One of the people in our party asked to swap mashed potatoes for fries which was not allowed so we ordered an additional side of mashed potatoes which were over mashed and almost inedibly salty. The wait staff was severely lacking. They didn't pour our wine and when we started pouring asked if they wanted us to pour. Yes, we did want them to pour but not offering in the upfront at a high end restaurant is inexcusable. They tried to take our ricotta when we still had plenty left and they left silverware and plates on the table from the appetizers and didn't bother to take them when the desserts came. The attention to detail is just not there. They wait staff was friendly and came around to ask how our food was, but honestly, it was a bit overkill, especially when I really didn't like the food. Overall, thought this place had a lot of potential, but simply cannot recommend it as just about all aspects missed the mark by a long shot. read more

The brussels sprouts were fire but apart from that, everything was meh. Service: Service was extremely sub par for what this restaurant is trying to be. Our waitress seemed as if she had never waited a table before and was asking us if we liked our food every time we handed in a plate which was extremely odd. Loved the former restaurant in this space and was eager to try out Moxie Modern. Unfortunately, it was disappointing all the way through. The wine selection is subpar, the house made ricotta appetizer was bland, and the spicy rigatoni was watered down. The only decent thing we ordered was the pork chop and had to negotiate for it to be cooked medium to medium rare. read more

The service was absolutely AWFUL. Our waitress was slower than a snail. She never took our menus away. It probably took about 30 mins for her to come back to our table in between the time she left the table to bring back drinks that she forgot several times. Our plates that were clearly finished sat in front of us for 20 mins. After picking up the plates there were shells left all over the table from the clams and shrimp. Although the food was good, I wouldn't return because the service was horrific. The location is horrible too. I hate to say it because I really do love Char-Kol, but this place is not worth the hype at all. read more
