I used to think Pops was pretty good. But today I realized they are nothing special. I ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel with lox spread. I always get this at Hank's. When I took a bite I noticed a glaring difference. The cinnamon raisin was not vibrant and there was hardly any lox in the lock spread. It just tasted and looked like regular cream cheese. Another lesson in driveby kindness: The smallest kindness is always rewarded even though it's the kindness itself that is the reward. After I picked up my mail at my BH office, I went to Pops Bagels across the street from my office. A young Latino man behind the counter asked what I wanted. I told him I wanted one gluten-free everything bagel and one sesame bagel. He told me that he only had sesame and plain. I threw my head down on the counter and said that all I wanted was a simple request and now my day is ruined. I exclaimed how can life be so difficult at times. He laughed, and I proceeded to tell him that I used to own a restaurant and I'm gluten intolerant so life is not fair but I write restaurant reviews and in all my restaurant hunting I have never found a restaurant with the name, mother, mama, or Madre in its name that wasn't excellent. I told him my theory is that one would never want to besmirch their mother's name by putting mother in the name of the restaurant and serving lousy food. However, I said the same did not apply to father, dad or pop as exemplified by the fact that I've been denied my choice of bagels. He was silent for a minute and he said you know you're right, every restaurant I've been to with Madre in the name has been really good. I said see. We laughed and he went and got me what I ordered which was two sesame bagels, but when he handed me the bag, he said I gave you an extra on the house. As I was walking around Beverly Hills early in the morning, I needed something to nourish my tummy, so I popped in for a bagel or two. I ordered an everything bagel and an onion bagel with salmon smear. I was quite pleased with the bagel quality and size. The salmon spread was good but not out of this world. Of course, I might be a tough judge as I have had some of the best bagels and smears in the world on the east coast. Bagels cost at least 2.50 a piece. Specialty bagels are more. The salmon smear is a bit pricy- 6 dollars for the smear along- may be best to get a side order of smear if they sell them. I did not see that on their menu. The inside space is small but seemed liked most people take their food to go- well at least at 7am in the morning when they opened. The atmosphere was clean and comfy. I ordered one dozen bagels days ago for my Mother's Day party. My husband arrived at the appointed time and was told, "WE DON'T HAVE ANY BAGELS." They said that there was nothing they could do about this. That it was not their fault; this is up to the headquarters. Omgosh! This place prepared the best bagel dish I've had in my life. I know that sounds odd, but seriously! I was recommended this spot by my LA tour guide! The bagel itself did not impress this New Yorker - it was a little hard and could have been more flavorful - but props for great lox and amazing tomato. And for serving it open-faced. Cute little shop in the middle of the bustle of Beverly Hills! The woman was extremely nice and the bagels are outstanding! The everything bagel is the best I've ever had! The coffee was delicious! Its tasty. Ingredients are fresh. I got the one with cream cheese and salmon. The amount of salmon was laughable paper thin pieces, but the entire sandwich tasted good. The portion is basically two big half bagels. The dough is not doughy and doesnt stand out like at Noah's. The tomatoes are really tasty and meaty. I admit I'm a ho for Jeni's, so I've always made a beeline to their shop, but I have taken notice of Pop's right next door. Well recently, I decided to bypass Jeni's and try out their neighbor. I really liked what I had at their Brentwood location, so I figured I was due for another visit. Service was friendly; took a moment to get someone since they were busy cranking out orders so that's understandable. There were about 3 customers in the place at the time. Since it was early enough, they still had plenty of plain bagels, so I finally bought one with butter, along with a chocolate chip bagel. The former was yum, as I had expected. Pops does bagels justice, and this was no exception. I know it's a boring, simple selection but it's worthy. As for the chocolate chip, I'm glad I tried it, but I'll be sticking to my favorites. As for those favorites, I still look forward to having another one of those crispy bacon/avocado/cream cheese creations, so I'm glad to have options. read more

I got an order of a half dozen bagels (plain, sesame, onion, everything, blueberry, chocolate) with a half pound of lox cream cheese. It was $27 which seems like a lot to me. I tried the lox open face bagel with a sesame bagel. I liked it better than boil & bake (costa mesa) and Layla bagels (bh location). I think courage is still my favorite but Pops is a close second for the bagel options in the SoCal area so far. I wouldn't get another sweet bagel after trying all the others since it's too subtle. The blueberry didn't taste like anything but the chocolate was a bit more noticeable. Their style of bagels is fluffy, thick, and they toast very nicely. I finally paid a visit to Pop's Bagels after seeing it on social media a few times. The bagel shop had a line to the door when my friend and I went at 11 am on a Sunday. The line to order moved quickly but there was a bit of a wait for the bagels. There were a handful of small tables and chairs against the walls and outside. Parking is available on the street and in a lot across the street. My friend and I ordered the Nova Lox on an everything bagel and loose blueberry and jalapeño cheddar bagels. I liked the wide selection of bagel flavors offered, but the bagels themselves were pretty average. They were thick and dense in the middle. The Nova Lox was pretty average in comparison to other bagel shops in LA because there was nothing about it that stuck out or was especially good. This is a solid option for a bagel and has decent prices for loose bagels, but I wouldn't go out of the way for it. read more

I was hankering for a bagel since our favorite local (O'ahu) Montréal bagelry has been temporarily closed when my brother-in-law recommended Pops Bagels instead of one of his other favorites. I had never heard of Pops Bagels, but I trust my brother's-in-law tastebuds, so we drove to this conveniently located site early Saturday morning. My brother-in-law counted on the fact that since it was a weekend day and morning (9 AM), we'd not have any parking issues on the usually busy Beverly Drive. Sure enough, we snagged a parking space directly in front of the bagelry and strode in to make our selections. Upon entry, we were greeted by a smiley young man who quickly offered his friendly customer assistance as I glanced over the menu on the countertop before ogling the bagels behind him. From what my brother-in-law told us, Pops Bagels are made in small batches, which assures the customer of freshness and perfect texture. The cost of the bagels ranges from $2 to $2.50 apiece. My brother-in-law ordered an assortment of plain, egg, everything, and waited for me and my husband to make our choices. Instead of ordering sweet bagels (chocolate chip or blueberry), we chose the jalapeño cheddar flavor before dashing home, where our schmears awaited us. My first impressions of Pops Bagels are huge, thick, fluffy yet dense, hole-less, and packed with flavor. As we cut the warm, hole-less bagels, I wondered about their texture since most bagels have holes to facilitate even cooking (boiling then baking). Although we cut the bagels into halves, the thick half slices were too wide to fit into our standard toaster, so we popped them into a toaster oven. The texture of the lightly toasted jalapeño cheddar bagels wasn't as dense or doughy as other NY-style bagels that we've eaten, and there was a lot of jalapeño chili peppers and cheddar cheese mixed in the dough. We expected the spiciness from the chili peppers, which were balanced by the cheese. Still, I used a considerable schmear of butter and thought about drizzling honey atop to neutralize the spicy chili peppers as this was my breakfast. Not to judge...but my husband topped his jalapeño cheddar bagel with peanut butter and strawberry jam! LOL. I couldn't wrap my head around that combination. But he claimed it worked for him.
