Nate & Al's has been around a long time, dodged a near-closing during Covid, and remains a favorite among the Beverly Hills folk who may not know better or may have forgotten what a truly good deli is. Oh, it presents as a textbook Jewish deli of old, with traditional brown booths and paneled dividers, dark Formica tables, and a menu featuring the greatest hits of deli dining. But the food here is overpriced and underwhelming, like so many of the other delis around town these days. The staff is nice, for sure. They welcome you with smiles, seat you quickly, and immediately offer you drinks. Everything is clean and well-preserved, so you feel like you're in for a great meal. I ordered my usual: Pastrami on Rye, Russian Dressing on the side, with Potato Salad. To drink: Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray, the very best soda for cutting through the richness of deli meat. The sandwich came promptly, and looked quite nice. The portion was appropriate for a normal sandwich (as opposed to being ridiculously stuffed), and the pastrami was nicely marbled. But looks can be deceiving. The bread was a bit too dense -- possibly made that way, or possibly a touch stale. Either way, after 2 bites I abandoned the bread and just ate the meat. The pastrami, while juicy with a soft texture, lacked flavor. I believe they bring their meat in from a purveyor, and the lack of inspiration is evident. Potato salad was also generously portioned, but had far too much mustard, and the result is a side dish that feels more Southern Picnic than Lower East Side. Again, this is a Deli serving a so-so sandwich at a price nearly the same as Katz's in NYC, and it's a shame. It's just not worth it. I've come to find that the best pastrami in Los Angeles is being served at places Johnny's in West Adams or on special at BBQ places, and usually at 2/3's the price. When it comes to Nate & Al's, I wouldn't say never go, but I wouldn't expect much bang for your buck -- or in the case of the pastrami sandwich, your 27-bucks. read more

Absolutely delicious! We spent a few weeks in los angeles to see the sites, after traveling S. from our new home in northern CA. The potato pancakes and cherry blintzes were ahhmazzing. Uncle Terry said he had the best banana bread here too. But he gobbled it up too fast for us to try it lol. We had a great booth by the door and we even saw Leonardo DiCaprio at a booth in the back. He tried to be a bit undercover as he had a big hat on even though it was kinda hot out. Conveniently located near UCLA, came here for early dinner with my baby Bruin. This place is a foodies paradise. Breakfast options are served all day, which is perfect for me because who likes the flexibility of ordering a lox bagel anytime the craving hits. Also a lot of delicious options for pastries, pies, and treats. I love that this place gives you a pickle plate. My favorite were the pickle chips. I could eat those all day. I ordered a matzo ball soup with chicken and bagel chips. Definitely amazing and the perfect dinner that leaves your belly warm on a cold winter day. The service here is excellent, prices are reasonable, portions are big, plenty of seating options, and parking is nearby at the parking garage. Highly recommend the coffee cake. Definitely hits the spot paired with coffee. I also ordered sliced rye bread to go. I definitely recommend ordered 1/2 a loaf unless you have a big family or a gathered then order the whole loaf. Had Saturday lunch with my UCLA-student son. What a fun spot! We were seated quickly, though it was busy. We have been checking off old-school Jewish-style delis around the greater LA area, so Nate'n Al's was a natural choice. Normally, I get a pastrami sandwich, but my wife wanted to share a sandwich and you guessed it--turkey. Don't get me wrong, it was a good turkey sandwich, but not a pastrami sandwich. My son ordered the pastrami, and it was excellent. I shared the matzo ball soup with my wife, which was very good. The pickle platter on the table was a nice touch, and the shoestring fries on the side were a winner. I thought the service was quite good, especially for such a busy place. You can never go wrong with an old school deli that serves the classics with a smile. When you walk in, the dining room decor immediately transports you to another time...the pristine wood paneling and vinyl upholstery are a throwback to when menus weren't fussy and the food was fabulous. We shared potato latkes and chicken pot pie pockets and our server, Daniel, immediately advised us that the pot pie pockets would "take a little longer. Is that okay??" You'd better believe it was okay, because those babies were flaming hot and tasted amazing. The potato latkes were perfectly crisp on the outside and so, so good. We had (of course!) matzoh ball soup, chicken noodle soup, chopped liver sandwich, roast beef sandwich, chicken pot pie and Nova salmon on bagel with the works .. followed by rugelah, chocolate cream pie, banana cream pie and the black/white cookie. Came here to get a corned beef sandwich for St. Patrick's Day after an appointment at Cedar's. I got the recommended corned beef sandwich with double rye bread , side coleslaw.. but not sure if I was supposed to put my own dressing for it, the meat was definitely very good. But I needed some sauce for it to be a perfect sandwich. Loved the coleslaw! I've been going to and loving delis all my life. Unfortunately, they are a dying breed, especially on the westside of LA. I've been to Nate 'n Al's many times over the years. I've always found the food midrange... not the best and not the worst. Delis are expensive. I had the Hollywood... corned beef, cole slaw, and russian dressing $31.45. They don't have fountain soda (where you usually get refills so you have to pay $4.50 for a can of soda. ok ok I can get past all of that..well sorta... until I finished my plate of pickles and asked for some more. "That will be $2.50." And for those reasons... I'm out. Been wanting to try this place for years and the overall experience was good. Our waiter Shawn was patient and friendly. The food came out quickly. The restaurant and bathrooms were clean. We enjoyed our matzoh ball soup, cheese blintzes, potato latkes, and sandwiches. The coleslaw was a little too sweet for my liking, but overall still ok. When I think of delis and diners, I think of really good food that doesn't break the bank. Unfortunately, Nate'n Al's does break the bank with most of their sandwiches being around $30, but also unfortunately, they're REALLY freaking good. My mom and I ordered the Brentwood (brisket sandwich with coleslaw and Russian dressing) and the Reuben and both were just incredible. Both were loaded up with tender, juicy meat. The coleslaw was delicious and the side of fries were great I think I vacuumed them up in 30 seconds. I would definitely recommend getting them on rye bread. We also tried the banana cream pie and that was one of the most delicious slices of pie I've ever had. I wold've never thought to order that myself, but it was really moist and the custard part of the pie was so flavorful I would definitely go back just to get that. I also ordered a black and white cookie and that was pretty good too. The service was quick and friendly and this place had that classic deli vibe with the big counter at the front and all of the brown leather booths. Parking is a bit annoying here because you're pretty much in the heart of Beverly hills, but there's street parking and plenty of paid lots in the area. read more

Easily one of my favorite Jewish delis in LA and definitely my favorite in Beverly Hills. As you would guess they have a huge menu filled with tons of options which is one of my favorite things about delis. Inside is large with tons of different booths as well as a large bakery area where you can get all sorts of baked goods to go. They don't have a dedicated parking lot however there is an underground parking garage on the same block with first 2 hours free parking. Our server was polite and everything that we ordered came out very fast. Just like most delis I would say pricing is more than it should be though. It's not as much as a trendy restaurant but still more than a solid LA diner. For my dinner I chose the Corned Beef Sandwich and it was one of the best I have ever had. It was so juicy and bursting with flavor. I tried to get the Onion Roll but they were sold out so I opted for the Kaiser Roll instead and it was a good choice. I honestly loved every bite and I already want to go back and try more dishes. I wish they would have more soup options but honestly the flavors here are great and I would recommend to any fan of delis or to anyone visiting Beverly Hills. read more

We had lunch at Nate 'n Al's yesterday and I'm glad to say, despite a change in ownership, the quality is the same as it's always been: great! This place is a solid choice for a Jewish deli that I believe compares favorably with most delis in Southern California. I love Nate'n Al's. I have been struggling to find a place like this in the Bay Area but moving forward I'll make and effort to go here whenever I'm in LA. As a solo diner I've always felt welcomed and love the old school vibe to the restaurant. The first time I came I had the pastrami sandwich on rye and really enjoyed it. It's comfort food for me. This time around, I came for brunch and decided to go all out. I ordered pastrami and eggs, which came with an onion bagel and hash browns. The pastrami was chopped into small pieces gave the eggs lots of flavor. The hash browns were flattened thin and crispy and the onion bagel was nice and chewy. I also ordered a cold slaw on the side. For dessert I ordered a warm chocolate babka. Yes that's a lot of food for one person. Granted, I didn't finish everything but everything was delicious! My server Shanice was awesome and she kept checking in on me. I ended up taking the bagel and half the babka to go so I can snack at the airport. I'm truly heartbroken. I had a personal connection to the past family of owners and had been numerous times before it was sold. I'm now one of those lazy westsiders that doesn't want to go past Lincoln if she doesn't have to. A friend of mine from New York heard about Nate & Al's being around for decades and wanted to go. I told him my history with the previous owners and he wanted to go even more. Well, the service was great, and that's the only reason I am giving 2 stars. He ordered a sandwich which he said was good, not great. I ordered my favorite which was matzo ball soup. It was bland. Can you imagine matzo ball soup being bland??? It's like they forgot there is something called salt. it also wasn't hot. Anyways, also ordered a side of mac n cheese. A huge brick of it showed up in front of me. Dry. Like, super dry. And kind of sour. It wasn't good. I ate a few bites and then gave up. My friend took it home and then later sent me a text saying he agreed with me. He'll eat almost anything and wouldn't eat it. So, as I said, I'm heartbroken. Maybe if I didn't know how good it used to be I wouldn't have the same expectations? Actually, that's wrong. At last! I have long wanted to try this institution. Today was the day. The five stars is for the service. Greeted warmly at the reception and seated right away at 1 pm. Busy lunch time on a Thursday. Server arrived as I sat down, asked about drinks, already setting down a glass of water....took my order and asked questions about the matzoh ball soup to make sure I was happy....bowl or cup, (bowl), chicken or plain, ( chicken), carrots ok? (Yes)...bagel chips or rye bread, I thought I'd try the chips. I am fond of latkes but ovly eat it when friends make it, and share....so I wanted to try... the Server was observant, friendly, and even apologized for not bringing the soup first, tho I don't know why. Since I was solo I mentioned to the Server I'd be ducking into the ladies....he put a menu on end to single that this table was occupied. Once I returned another waiter came to confirm my soup order, which was nice though my Server was very much amazing. As for the food, it was fine the soup was a little low on liquid, but the matzoh ball 5/5 was a good consistency, the noodles were generous, the soup was hot, the carrots were perfectly sized and not overdone. It was not salty, which was great, only the chicken was stringy and dry, but sometimes breast meat is like that. 3/5. As for the latkes, hm ... good sized, you get 2, the sour cream and apple sauce were cold, so refreshing but the latkes had a lot of glistening oil ... and were a bit too crunchy burnt around the edges, alas, 3/5. Still I enjoyed the ambience ...sports fans delight, along a wall several flat screens so you can keep up with day games 5/5. TIP: Public parking off Santa Monica Blvd and Beverly Drive. A short walk to the deli. Previous attempts to dine it was the lack of street parking that kept me from dining...but this time I had time to walk, so I popped in at the public parking with its daunting narrow one-way entry. Must mention the variety of complementary pickles....awesome crisp, awesome flavors. 5/5 for the quality and variety of the pickles!!! Eye wateringly goooood.
