Crisp bacon some pancakes
Marc L.

Service is very good. Friendly and attentive. The place is setup to look retro 50s vibe. OK cool pictures on the wall and collectibles scattered about. Certainly not unique but definitely cool. The bacon is good cooked exactly the way I asked for it. The pancakes are also good. I had iced coffee as well. She lets you put in your own flavored creamer as well

Vintage Mid Century Modern Boomerang Luncheonette

Poppy's Place looks like the TV set for "Happy Days." Everything is red and white with Formica Boomerang vintage Mid-Century design on tables and countertop, and walls covered with Elvis and James Dean posters. All they need are cameos from Richie and The Fonz and the impression would be complete. You don't have to have loved that show to appreciate the effort put in by the folks at Poppy's. It puts Johnnie Rocket's to shame. Service was provided by cast extras who have aged somewhat in the intervening years. Only wish the soda fountain was still working because it is so hard to get a quality Black & White these days. My breakfast sandwich of Sausage, Egg & Cheese on Kaiser, was okay with two Fried Eggs, a slightly over-grilled patty and an overload of White Cheese on a fresh roll. The weak link was the meat, which tasted as it had been frozen, heated, and lost its flavor and zest somewhere along the line. It was an adequate sandwich, but not a memorable one that would bring me back for another. Coffee was fine, if non-descript. Go here for a touch of nostalgia and a decent breakfast, but don't expect any bobbysocks babe to take your breath away.

I ordered the full stack of French toast with bananas, strawberries, and blueberries, and a side of sausage links. My wife had the west Coast scrambler which consisted of eggs, avocado, pepper jack cheese, tomatoes, and scallions. Our friends ordered the chorizo burger with fries, and pastrami on rye with a side of coleslaw. As a coffee snob, I would say the coffee was very good. Everything came out cooked fresh and hot. Plenty of fresh fruit on top of my French toast. I heard the chorizo burger was different and delicious. Most of the plates went back clean. Portions were very generous. The service was excellent and friendly. The prices are reasonable. There is plenty of parking in their private parking lot. Worth the trip if you are in the area.

The menu is MASSIVE, don't come if you're indecisive or if you don't plan to come back to try more dishes ! The waitstaff sticks to the silly bit , wearing PJs, bordering on rude but in a playful way that makes it fun and not annoying. There are so many knick knacks on the walls to look at - lots of conversation starters! We enjoyed everything we ordered (the afternoon waffle section was a fun twist on a sandwich and proved you can have it all!) and are already scheming what we will have next time we come back!

And, no I am not awarding four stars for the service approach towards diners ... she did refill my coffee mug once and then surprisingly just took the creamers away without asking (I drink my coffee black but she didn't know that.). Clearly she has favorites because the guy in the booth next to me got the lovey-dovey "hon" treatment. The Sand Castle has a feeling of having been worn down by the waves through the years type of place because many of the booth chairs and counter chairs exhibit wear and even more than a few tears. On a cold November Saturday morning I could feel the chill as I sat in my booth sipping my coffee (And, I wasn't anywhere close to the front door.). So onto the four stars ... but don't say I didn't warn you about service and ambiance. Well, it feels like a shore diner and I like that feel but yea worn out a bit. Quite awhile ago stopped by for dinner and the food was really good with lots of tempting options. I always judge diners by their soup and the soup was top notch! Our meals were enjoyable at a reasonable price. And, then I just forgot to review the diner. But decided to return for breakfast today after a long Friday night. Coffee arrived promptly and was really decent coffee but the amazing part of my breakfast was how quickly the really wall prepared omelette was served. It was like in the blink of any eye and for many a promptly delivered breakfast meal is a real plus (I appreciated it!!!!). Although the waitress really didn't want to be bothered with me the rather short diner breakfast menu had the classics and that quickly prepared omelette was a tasty WESTERN. The homefries were really good ... actually they were great even without onions in them (Waitress never asked if I'd like onions and rushed away so I didn't ask but these potatoes didn't need onions.). Toast was toast and the jam/jelly selection was universally grape jelly with one orange marmalade. A very good breakfast and I wasn't here to make friends just to warm up ooops ok, so I didn't warm up but the coffee helped, and to do some work. Still worth the food if you're in the neighborhood!
