John, and his son Ben, are the most gracious hosts and love to discuss their wines with all visitors. The winery provides both indoor and outdoor seating, with beautiful views overlooking the vineyards, surrounding hills, and Mt. Woodson peak. They also offer a more private, shaded tasting area, which they call "The Island". In addition, we have a picnic table located in our experimental vineyard block, which you are welcome to use. Also note, they are a dog friendly property. They don't have food, but they did have complimentary crisps (potato chips) and you could purchase cheese. You're also welcome to bring your own food to complement your wine tasting experience. WINES: Quality made, Italian varietals in an "Old World" style. Typically, the tastings include varietals such as Vermentino, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Primitivo (Zinfandel), Montepulciano, Barbera, and Sagrantino, with many from the estate vineyards. Poppaea may be a little out of the way of most of the other Ramona wineries, but it's so well worth the visit. I highly recommend. read more

We enjoyed tasting wine here on a warm Summer afternoon. Their hilltop location had a nice breeze and we were very comfortable sitting outside. Great interaction with the winemaker made the experience memorable. We were served a flight of tastes, no waiting at a bar. This place is wonderful, the owner is very friendly and very helpful, it was my first time in a winery and it was really comfortable, first Mr. John came to our table and explained the wines he had and gave us recommendations, he was very patient and kind when explaining us, we tried their wines and we loved it, to my taste I loved the primitive one, I would really return to this place, it is cozy and very friendly for a Sunday afternoon it is supremely wonderful. Did not have a chance to taste the wines. If you are looking for fun easy going wine tasting day there are better options. Rolled in on Friday at 1:45 and the owner rudely decided to give my spouse crap for coming to the winery 15 minutes before opening. Apparently, you are supposed to ignore the 4 foot by 8 foot "Open" sign and fully dedicate your attention to the 8 inch lettering 2 - 5 pm. No biggie, we left... but the owner decided, with a scolding tone, " read the sign properly" when we were driving off. I called here to get information since I was thinking of visiting. When I called it sound like an older English male answered by saying, "hello" I thought he'd answer by saying the name of this winery. I said I wanted to know more information about wine tasting. Phone attendant said what did I need to know. I thought I'd be offered information but I asked anyway. I asked what type of wines such as what varietals and how many wines and what the charge was. He said all of his wines were Italian wines. He said there were 5 wines for tasting for $15. I asked (again) which varietals. He said Sangiovese, and 3 others. I asked what the 5th wine was. Went for a drive in Ramona for the 4th of July holiday with family that came into town. Many wineries were closed. Found this nice place along the way. Great wine and great people. They are very welcoming and provided great information about their wine. They only have reds and rarely am I a fan of red wines but this place is definitely an exception. By far the "class" of the day of otherwise uneven wine tastings. Northern San Diego county has a variety of wineries with lovely settings, lots of friendly hosts, etc. but the wine is definitely hit or miss. The quality of Poppaea's wines was far above the rest. We traveled out to Poppaea Vineyard after an excellent referral from anther local winery, stressing that the focus of the winery was their focus on high-quality Italian wines. John, owner, was pouring in the vineyard's tasting room. My wife and I were very surprised to learn the John was a retired Brit, with a passion for Italian wines. There were locals sipping in the corner of the tasting room, so John spent his time with the two of us and explaining direction and his love for Italian wine. Poppaea's wines consisted of a "Vertical Tasting" of a Primitivo 2013 & 2014. We enjoyed both but went with the 2014! there were several additional offerings in the red category, however, the wine that went home with us, was the 2014 "Marcus Aurelius". We plan a return trip, end of May and this is one stop we will make, again! read more

Wonderful vineyard run by a wonderful English family with a passion for winemaking. Estate-grown wines that are smooth with some bold flavors. They specialize in rare / less commonly heard varietals from old Italian vines. Similar to most area wineries, there is no distribution so bottles can be purchased only at the tasting room. This boutique Winery is run by a delightfully warm & inviting English family.
