This is the second year that I've driven to Underhill to visit poor house pies and get a blueberry pie for my boyfriend's birthday. The little shop is so cute to pop into to, and I love the doorbell feature to notify someone you've arrived when you're picking up a specific order. The pies are the most delicious I have ever had. These pies are made with love and are the star of my boyfriend's birthday! It will be an annual tradition for years to come. I highly recommend the blueberry crumble!

What a find! We are vacationing in Smuggs Resort in Vermont and on our drive to Ben & Jerry's tour we saw a pie sign. We doubled back because Yelp said it closes at 4 and we weren't sure we would make it back in time. So as greedy foodies we are we couldn't miss the opportunity. I'm so glad we U-turned it back. We didn't have much time to shop because we had a Ben & Jerry's reservation. In 10 minutes of whirlwind shopping we picked up savory, sweet, handheld pies, and even a T-shirt. This is a must stop! We picked up a cherry apple crumb pie, cherry sweet cheese pocket pie, blackberry apple pocket pie, bacon sausage eggs d cheddar pocket pie, French onion beef pie, and a pulled pork mac n cheese pie. Sounds amazing right! Well they are! I wanted to get so many others but I knew there was no way we could eat them all.

Their pies should be up for a James Beard award. This vegetable curry pie is to die for. From scratch, no hydrogenated oils, etc. Chickpeas, cauliflower, carrot, sweet potato, potato, peas with a coriander chutney. They make deep dish quiches, fruit pies, cream pies, savory pies, hand pies. Friends raved about them for years. I finally trekked up to buy a few. The key lime gluten free was equally sublime.

Fabulous pies - definitely worth stopping if you are in the area. We sampled their apple hand pies, very berry pie, and donuts, which apparently they only have on Sundays. We didn't have any of their savory pies, but I'm sure they are just as good. What a treat!

Best Pie in Vt. We always grab multiple pies when we're even remotely close to it. Key lime or Raspberry peach are my favs!

What a perfect treat tucked away in Vermont! We stopped by at around 6pm and saw that the shed was closed. Luckily we came back the next day at 10:30 and grabbed a pie! The shed is pretty small so one person or two jammed people can fit at a time. The system is straight forward: check out the pie selections, put money in the box, take pie and enjoy! We got the raspberry blueberry and it was delicious. Not too sweet, bright and tart, flaky crust. You can tell these are made with love. We look forward to the next pie we can try from this magical place!

Pay here. Look at all the notes and flyers, just like you'd see at a hippie-hippy college somewhere.

Upon arriving at Poorhouse Pies, one's reaction might be, "Holy granola, Batman!" This place, essentially a shack in the sticks with self-service pies, is as funky as the day is long and works in an area like Burlington, Vermont and its surroundings. Most people have given Poorhouse Pies 5 stars. I have been here courtesy of a friend who lives in this area and who purchased two pies. As such, I did not pay for the pies. The pies were good, though not exactly "off the charts" good for the prices I saw. What might also affect one's opinion of this outfit and its nifty idea are the flavors of the pies they are featuring at the time one visits. Looking at other people's photos, I would have liked the key lime pie or most pies with chocolate! Per the photos I will attach, pumpkin pies were available that day, as were peach pies (but as a mix with another fruit). I like peach-only pies. This is an opportunity to support a small business and, since I don't buy whole pies, it made sense in that the pies were to be eaten by several people. Sometimes, I do cave in to that impulse purchase, individually packaged, and very processed slice of pie for under $1 at the grocery store and for which the nutritional label is frightening. Again, this is slightly outside of Burlington, Vermont and it seems to be a hit with many locals who speak of it with fondness and amusement. Poorhouse Pie's pie shack is well suited to this area in that it is spot-on for an earthy-crunchy locale with a fair amount of disposable income. If you're not familiar with the Burlington, Vermont area, then think Boulder, CO, Madison, WI, Asheville, NC, Sedona, AZ, or any smaller collegiate and/or progressive town in the upper left-hand corner of the country. If assigning stars according to word count, "Holy granola, Batman!" and "labor of love" make for 3 stars, but "love" is a four letter word, as is "good." For their good pies, Poorhouse Pies gets 4 stars from me.

This place was on our way to our first destination this morning and we said screw it, let's give a try, Ooof!! we would've have a better tasty breakfast at McDonald's for half the cost. Yep!! This place is actually really pricey for the quality of food you get here. I ordered the egg, cheese sandwich on a biscuit (because we always like to try the local restaraunt's biscuits) and I added their maple sausage. I wanted to get an almond croissant as well until I saw a fly in the pastry cabinet just have his way on all the pastries. NOPE!! This was probably one of the worse breakfast sandwiches I have ever had to date. The biscuit itself was hard as a rock, dry and crumbled upon touch. It was lousy as heck. The maple sausage was a thick patty, but small, almost like a quarter size round compared to the size of the biscuit. So for what sandwich and a cup of coffee was around $23. Heck no! Was that even worth it with how bad inflation is these days Not sure how they have such high ratings, but just be warned. You're welcome!

By the time I left this place around lunchtime I felt like I was part of the family. My three hour visit included a blueberry corn muffin, red pepper chicken risotto soup served with a fresh croissant, and coffee. All for $9. (note: cash only). The soup and croissant knocked my socks off. I had visions of Oliver Twist slurping up stew and saying, "please sir, I want some more sir." Mmm....just thinking about it now warms my stomach. Note: this place is no frills. Waterbury offers free community wifi but it can be spotty in this location. The charm of this place is definitely the outdoor patio and fact that you have to stroll through an alley to find it. Double note: they sell breads, gingersnap cookies, croissants and a few other baked treats. The owner told me that he has been operating via wholesale for years but just recently opted to open up for a mini café section. Hallelujah.
