This update is long overdue. I can't speak any higher of Al and the work his team performed in July 2018. My wife and I were stuck between a rock and a hard place once we discovered the pool we had purchased from RoyalSwimmingPools.com was actually a specialty pool. Being a specialty pool meant it was engineered very differently than ~95% of all pools and it required a custom installation. The first contractor that tried to work on this pool (another North Shore based pool company which won't be named) eventually gave up on the installation after spending multiple days tearing up our backyard. I then contacted a mason to install 8 cement footings that were required as part of the custom installation. We later discovered the cement blocks were incorrectly placed (i.e. not leveled). We tried calling several pool contractors in the area who adamantly stated they would not touch a Doughboy pool. Royal Swimming Pools could not provide us any help since they didn't have any contractor connections in New England. Doughboy Pools corporate was similarly useless. Over three weeks had passed since the first installation attempt and we weren't making any progress. After finding Pools by US Plus on Yelp, we contacted Al and Melanie out of desperation and gave them a detailed breakdown of our dilemma. Melanie was very responsive and friendly. They gave us a reasonable quote (i.e. their standard rate) and said they could help us out (THE NEXT DAY!). Al visited the evening before the work was performed. He was extremely approachable and well-mannered much unlike the typical contractor. Despite the difficult nature of the job due to the customized installation and the rework that was required, they were able to get the job started and finished in one day! Perhaps most importantly, they even followed the exact instructions in the Doughboy manual so the 60-year pool warranty can remain intact! Al also provided a recommendation for us to upgrade our pool filter which we were able to act on before the installation was complete. We couldn't be happier. Just a horrible experience working with Al that left a bad taste in my mouth. They clearly do not know their audience and try to take advantage of up-selling in the moment. I am speaking specifically to them trying to sell me bubble wrap for $1,000. They had TWO years to inform me of the benefits of applying cushion to the walls and bottom of the pool. Instead, they try to take advantage of the customer right before the liner goes in. This is obviously by design and I am sure they get ignorant customers that feel the pressure to make a decision and overpay for their employees to stick on bubble wrap in 15 minutes. They began the day by unboxing my pool and telling me what a great pool I had going in. Then Al shows me pictures of a rusting skimmer boxes and tells me the pool I bought is cheap in an attempt to extort $1,000 for bubble wrap. When I tell them this is what the warranty is for, he laughs and says good luck with that. Do they think people that are excited for their new investment want to hear this? Their entire approach was cheesy and nothing that came out of his mouth was genuine. Asking me how much I paid for my pool and my car and asking if he can sit in my car with stone dusted clothes. Telling me that the bubble wrap would keep the heat in my pool. Do they think I was born yesterday? Heat dissipates from the top of the pool, not the sides and bottom. They also made ME run my car for THREE hours to heat up the liner in the backseat. What the f*** was wrong with the two trucks they had in my driveway? They should NEVER expect the customer to do this for you. They wanted to make the liner easier and more pliable to install, then they should find a way to heat it up, not ask me to. My car broke down the next day as the main computer board melted (+$1,000 in damage). The placement of the pool could have been better. I counted on them and paid extra to abut a deck. If the pool was set 1 foot more to the right it would have met the deck curve perfectly. But this would have required them to actually dig out and prepare another foot that the old pool was not on. I paid for this. They are supposed to be the professionals, but they took the easy way out whenever they could. Nothing that came out of Al's mouth was genuine. He kissed my a** all day trying to butter me up for the big sell, I felt like I was dealing with a used car salesman. Even if the bubble wrap was a good idea, at that point I trusted nothing that came out of his mouth. They left my yard a mess and did not take the boxes away. My driveway had an inch of stone dust on it. A simple broom and sweep would have been sufficient. The $1,000 bubble wrap hard sell was insulting to my intelligence. Offering me a lower price for "cash". Out of all the line items that Melanie carefully went over in terms of add-ons, why is the bubble wrap coming up during the installation? I will tell you why, because they give the customer no time to research on purpose and hope they throw money away under pressure. Abramo Pools confirmed that this was not necessary and also took exception to them telling his customers the pool was "cheap". They were also appalled that he had the customer heat up the liner in their own car. The experience working with Al was just sleezy, for lack of a better word, but appropriate. I can't tell you how annoyed I am, just a bunch of gypsies. Lastly, I have a very sharp rock sticking up from the bottom of the liner. They were supposed to remove the old stone dust, rake and clean the area and then apply new stone dust. They literally just went over it. These guys barely had to grab a shovel but charged me a ton of money for it. read more

Work done: Installed an above ground oval pool on in a tricky location. They had to have a lot of sand brought in, and then needed to level the area. We had requested to put the pool right up against our deck, which they weren't able to do, due to the braces on the side of the oval pool but they got pretty close. They hooked up the filter and feeder, but no ladder or accessories. Their information is very detailed about all the potential issues or additional asks that might crop up, which was especially helpful for a newbie like me. However, make sure you do read all the documentation, as there are many possible additional charges that quickly add up (in our case, to nearly the same cost as the base install (e.g. location next to existing structure; ferrying sand across the yard; the sand itself; etc.). Pros: Very responsive, upfront, respectful. They did a good job with the install. The pool is level and the liner only has a few small wrinkles. We've been using the pool for a season now, and have had no issues crop up. I felt confident throughout about what they were doing and what it would cost. Cons: MUCH more expensive than other quotes we saw. However, it's hard to say what the actual bill would have ended up being with another company. Still, they themselves are very upfront about not being the cheapest. Also, there are some logistical hoops they require regarding the pool permit (they won't get it for you) and requiring money orders or cash for the deposit and payment. read more

So disappointed in the entire process. Started off as $800 to replace liner. Seemed fair enough. Then I got a call from the company, they needed a bank check for $400 up front. Once they have the non refundable deposit the fun starts. You will need to have additional bank checks. Another 400 and 375 because they have to work around a 12 ft long deck. And then they highly recommend have several hundred additional dollars in cash for any incidentals. Believe me there are. 200 for compacting 300 for foam base. So the price almost doubled. When they were "done" I told Al I didn't like the wrinkles and he insisted they would pull out as it filled. Guess what they didn't and I have more wrinkles than I did with the old liner. Once the water is in there isn't much you can do and there is nothing they will do. If they told me the installation cost more upfront and didn't bait and switch everything I would have been more understanding. read more

I should have listened to a buddy who was in the business for many years to steer clear of these folks. I paid the price of time and in the end they proved themselves to be dishonest but with a super nice smile and welcoming approach. I told them they lost a very good potential customer and, without question, more referrals for people in and around my area. I planned this install for over a month including getting all the permits and he drops the following on me at the last minute (using his wife as the messenger) HERE ARE THE FACTS: Al quoted me $2k for the "used top of the line" pool he was taking from another house plus possibly another $1k for liner and additional parts. His wife called and said is was actually $3k for the pool alone plus like $1K in "extras". Both Al land his wife told me the install price of $2800 for the pool. The price DOUBLED if I wanted the "fence and deck installed" which was part of the entire pool system he sold me in the first place (used but complete). Clearly a tactic they have used on others (per your many negative reviews online here and elsewhere). The entire time they never mentioned a "delivery charge" yet she drops another $500 to deliver. So in the end, they wanted $7,000 FOR LABOR to install a kit pool. That is nearly 3x what is should cost. The worst part is they strung me along thru permitting (which was costly) and weeks of back and forth just to nearly double the price in the end. Steer clear folks. read more

We were referred to Pools by Us Plus by the company that we purchased the pool from. Melanie was so kind and extremely thorough on the phone. I was nervous about the whole process because I couldn't believe that neither the pool company or the installers came to look at the site ahead of time. I'm not sure if this is common practice, but it all worked out. They really knew what they were doing! Al was the supervisor on job site. I heard him yelling at/to one of his workers, but that just shows me that he holds his workers to a high standard of expectations since he knows that it's name that gets tied to the quality of the installation. He explained the process and let me know the options that could be added to the basic installation. We are about 2 months away from opening the pool again, so I'm curious about how the workmanship will hold up after the spring thaw. Finding a good pool installer seems to very difficult for some reason. I'll start with the things that were done very well: - high level of communication throughout the process - returned same day after a major pool part was missing and it was delivered by the pool place...I'll give them an A for effort but this turned out to be a mistake - was prompt and polite A few things happened that made me give the 2 star rating: - paid an extra $300 to "work with an existing deck" and yet I have very large gaps between the pool and deck...10 inches in some places - paid an extra $75 to "work with a salt water system" and yet parts were left out, the system was inoperable and I spent a few days completing the hosing connections and getting it going myself - some very sharp rocks under the liner that have me worried about holes in the near future - walls bow in and out of the oval pool where they should be straight - felt like a rush job, would have preferred they come back the next day rather than come back after pool part was delivered just to get it done In summary, the husband wife team was polite, professional, and communicated well, but I wasn't happy with the over all experience because I felt nickel and dimed, and that my pool could have had a better level of install had they not been in such a rush. read more

I should have done more research on Pools by US Plus as I am not thrilled with the work done on my replacement liner.... Please make sure you understand all the fine print and check the workmanship throughout the summer and into the fall if you have a new liner installed by Melanie & Al. This spring in noticed my liner had slipped down in several spots after being installed for 8 months but per the agreement workmanship is only covered until the end of the year (12/31/2015)... where the slip occurred - it could only be seen from a certain angle because of the deck we have around the pool - it just so happened I was doing some deck work and was at the correct angle... I called and was told there would be a charge --- this is after paying the top price they quoted (another area to watch closely) because they did a little leveling (no additional material added) by hand -- but without correcting the issue it would only get worse so I had it fixed..... I will not use this company again for any work... read more

Melanie & All are greatI I am surprised there is no review for them! I was so impressed by Melanie's constant call back rate! Some companies only call you back when they need business or not at all, Melanie responded to me every single time I emailed or called for my above ground pool installation. Her professionalism is what pretty much sealed the deal for me. It's rude to not receive call backs or information when you request it. I was referred to them by Everclear Pool (who I also loved dealing with). They worked with Everclear to set my pool up. Even when my pool wasn't delivered as expected, from the distributor, and I lost my original install date, Melanie let me know when she was hoping to fit me into their schedule and kept me in the loop. I received a contract that outlined a base price and every potential extra cost that could come up. From that, you could estimate what additional work Al may have to do, (ex, he had to excavate and level my pool area over 3ft, for a cost I knew in advance) Al showed up to install my pool, on a drizzling Friday afternoon at 12:30. I was thrilled because I was thinking that there was no way they would come with it being a rainy Friday. The pool was up and ready to go within four hours. Al and his crew were respectful and professional, no issues at all! Now, my husband feels they could have fixed that grass and dug up areas a little better, with the Bob Cat, before they left. But because the contract did say that they leave the dirt where it is and do no landscaping, I knew that was how it would be. He was disappointed with that they didn't patch it up but I feel we knew in advance. Regardless, we would definitely use PBUP again and would highly recommend them to friends! read more
