Friend and I went for lunch last Saturday. The place was pretty crowded. The menu is full of pictures and descriptions of all the food. The limeade that fellow Yelpers wrote about is actually listed in English as lemonade. It is quite refreshing. I started with the chicken soup. It was filled with maybe 3-4 pieces of chicken, lots of veggies too. Very nice start. We shared maduros (sweet plantains) and chicharron with arepa. Both were very generous sized portions and good. My main was half a grilled chicken. It was very juicy! The spices were good. My friend's main was steak that was served with arepa con queso. He seemed to enjoy it. Growing up in Hudson county, I've had my fair share of great Colombian food AND rotisserie chicken (shout out to Johns fried chicken). So when I came across Pollos Mario on Yelp I was excited. Unfortunately I did not have the same delicious experience as my fellow yelpers. I was pretty underwhelmed. My friend and I split the Mario's platter which was a sampling of a bunch of stuff (steak, chicken, chicharron). So glad we split it bc it was so much food. We even had leftovers to take home. Nothing on the plate stood out. Service was also not great. I asked for water a couple times before someone got around to refilling my cup. Probably will not be return. read more

The food is very good! When you walk into the restaurant you feel like if you where in a city in colombia. Our server was very friendly and she help us with my cousins food allergy. Pollo Mario is by far my favorite Colombian food. The staff is super friendly and are taking the proper Per-caution during the pandemic. I have read a few reviews underneath that have many lies in them. I ask everyone to respect the rules here and everywhere they go. Horrible horrible treatment. Lady screaming at everyone "stand here stand there, don't you see the floor signs?" Just super rude. I couldn't believe how a lady spoke to a man that went to pick up his order because his mask wasn't over his mouth. He was going to put it on and she was just like can't people read? Wow. Guy sends his wife to pick up food and the lady chewed her out. The wife hadn't even spoken yet. Just disgusted at the entitlement the worker had. How dare she speak to customers that way. I walked away after that fiasco and didn't order anything. There is a way to speak to customers. Simply saying sir can you please cover your mouth with the mask? That would have done it. Ordering here is pretty much like gambling. One day you might order and they might say "we never received your order" but find it in the system. One day your food is over cooked and another day it might be raw. So if you and your family are really hungry I suggest you not order here because it's like a rolling a dice. read more

Being half Latin, finding good authentic food is hard. It's always americanized or worse yet an American invention (Taco Bell's Mexican Pizza, if you call that food). Pollos Mario is a total exception. I ate breakfast here and had the most amazing food that almost tasted like being home. On my way back from NY after taking care of some personal business, I decided to finally try Pollos Mario as it's been on my yelp bookmarks forever. I stumbled on Pollos Mario a few years back and when you browse their website and see the many vivid photos of all the dishes available you can see why I bookmarked this restaurant. I started with an appetizer of yucca fries and they were very tasty albeit very dense and more starchy than say potato fries, though this is attributable to the nature of yucca. For my entree I ordered the "El Jalisco" which is a dish that is actually not listed on Pollos Mario's online menu. It started with a salad which was fresh and dressed very well. After the salad the main part of "El Jalisco" was served and it was comprised of a generously portioned medium rare skirt steak topped with a tangy fresh pico de gallo and sour cream, spanish yellow rice, beans, guacamole, and some nachos. I've cut down on my consumption of rice dramatically the past year, but I found the combination of beans and rice so tasty that I finished the entire portion. Luckily I was planning to run the next day (as I do on most Sundays), so all those carbohydrates were used effectively LOL. Everything on the dish was very fresh; even those oddly included nachos were very crunchy and not at all oily. My only two gripes were both related to the skirt steak. One was that it could have been seasoned better and secondly, the steak had a piece of inedible gristle at the end which wasn't trimmed off prior to cooking. Nonetheless, neither detracted from a very good and filling meal at a very reasonable price as well! read more

I came here after feeling hungrier that a Somalian and was in the mood for rotisserie chicken. I came alone and was seated fairly quickly. My order consisted of rice, beans, 2 sunny side up eggs, sweet plantains and a whole chicken. Everything was good although I wasn't aware they add pork in their beans (I don't eat pork by choice so I fished it out and continued eating). The chicken had no flavor at all. I'm used to having really good chicken so it let me down a bit. I will give this spot another try to be fair. If that fails I'll continue going to Peruvian spots for my rotisserie chicken. Overall not bad but wasn't anything to run home about. Now to offload the rest of this chicken to my unemployed best friend. read more

So again this is a situation of convenience no car and not knowing to broad an area near the job. In walking by every morning and them having pics of there food up on the Bldg I tried them like a week ago after checking other yelper reviews. I wasn't disappointed. The grilled tilapia and salad was awesome, I opted out of the fries since it came with rice (didn't think to sub it for veggies or beans.....I will next time). Very casual neighborhood spot, quite obviously SUPER popular with the local Latino population, the food & service are average at best, but the spot offers large helpings of fairly decent food at very reasonable prices so very popular for family meals. Today I ordered from the app, requested to separate the meats from the rest of the food becauseihad vegetarians over. After an unflattering review a few months back, I must sadly say that things just keep getting worse at Pollos Mario. My wife attended a meeting in the area and decided to pick up two chickens for dinner. How could it be that their main food item, as it's included in their name, could be done so poorly? Mind you, we are very familiar with this chain (dating back almost 20 years to their original spot in Queens) and this is probably the worst that it has ever been. Pollos Mario is one of my go-to restaurants that I frequent! I always get the rotisserie chicken, and papa cosinada (boiled potato). I also like to get a chicken empanada, or a beef empanada. They are so delicious! The staff is always so friendly, and service is awesome! I go on my lunch break-I get an hour. My order is always in by 1:15 and I'm out by 1:45. Everything is so fresh. The one and ONLY reason why I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because they run out of empanadas often. read more

Going to write this review as cut-and-dry and simple as possible...just like their steak. Ordered a small steak with french fries for lunch. Steak was dry and flavorless. The fries were thin and frozen. Tasted like they had been sitting around since the morning. The place was surprisingly packed with patrons for lunch. I've also had empanadas from this place during work luncheons. I'm not a fan. Service wasn't great either for the short amount of time I was there. For a chain, you can't get any closer to home cooking than Pollos Mario. This is very good Colombian cooking. Living in SoCal for the last 5 years, I'm not privy to much Hispanic cuisine outside of the Mexican realm. So on my trips back to Jersey, I always try to visit Hispanic/Latin restaurants as much as possible. On my last visit here, I ordered the Arroz con Pollo. Amazing. Excellent yellow rice and super moist, perfectly spiced chicken. Paired with a delicious limeade, and I had myself quite the feast. The skirt steak is also a big winner, as is anything with shrimp. If you are stuck in jury duty, I would definitely recommend this place for a cheap, tasty, insanely filling lunch which will make some of the misery and unending torment of your enslavement to the judicial system seem a little less bleak. 3.5 stars. The place looks sketchy as hell from the outside, but is actually clean, large and nice on the inside. When I was there, nobody spoke English - just a caution. It's close to my office and got good reviews, so I had to give it the benefit of the doubt and check it out. Since lots of yelpers talked about the rotisserie chicken, I tried it. It was pretty good, but the white meat was a little dry and the dark meat was a touch gamey. Overall, better than grocery store or Boston Market, but not the best I've ever had. The aguacate salad (avocado) was really good. I wasn't thrilled about the abundance of shredded lettuce, but the tomatoes, cucumbers, and avocado were in the perfect proportions. The pickled red onions and pickled beets, however, rocked. The yellow rice was the highlight of my dish. I have no idea how it was prepared, but it was just about perfect. Aromatic, flavorful, just lovely. I could have done without the peas, but even that didn't break it. I'll be back to try some other dishes - maybe the skirt steak. read more

Our friends brought us here and said that everybody comes for their roasted chicken. We arrived too late though, as apparently, only half a chicken was left. It was only a little after eight o'clock in the evening. So we took that last half, plus an order of their chicharones (deep fried pork belly), an order of Entranya (grilled skirt steak), and mango juice. Our meals came with salad, beans, potatoes, arepas and rice. Everything was delicious! Service was great. Food was delivered promptly. This place has a mom and pop feel to it. The menu is pretty diverse in terms of entrees (chicken, beef, pork, sole, snapper). Legit Spanish food right here, favorite is their rotisserie chicken, which my wife ordered. It was very juicy and reasonable ($5 for a half). I ordered the grilled chicken with fries, which was generous (3 large pieces of thin chicken grilled and marinated to perfection) and could have been split between me and my wife if we were not starving. This came with rice and beans, which were delish. I pigged out big time here, but i didn't feel god-awful full the way i would if i went ham at a fast food joint. Came here twice, the day I landed from my Vegas trip and this past weekend. First of the location is quite fitting. Right on the main avenue of Hackensack close to the municipal court. I don't believe they have parking for we parked in the side street with meter parking. Coming in to the place is nothing too fancy, Latin music and futbol games ls pretty much the ambiance to expect. You get seated immediately and do warn you it can get quite packed. The menu selection is quite large from seafood to steaks chicken soups, desserts etc.. My order was the Carne asada (number 34_ I believe). Waitress was very friendly and knew just went to come and attend you. It took about 35minutes for our food to arrive and wow was I surprised. Huge portions. 3 separate plates; salad bowl, main steak and sweet plantains and the third a huge plate of rice and beans. Steak is not top quality nor the finest but it tasted good, was cooked how I asked and it was well seasoned, everything else was delicious. The price was about 13$ plus 5$ tip, total was under 20$_. Great little find. My coworkers recommended this place and we've dined here for lunch several times. The quality of food is consistent. So are the portions. I can eat a full plate of food but their regular portions are massive. The half portion is still a lot of food. I've only had the Bandeja Tipico. It comes with carne asada, chicharron, egg, corn cake, sweet plantain, rice, beans and avocado. It's all very tasty. Service is decent. It's on street parking, so give yourself extra time to park.
