The prices and portions here just cannot be beat! Its a very casual place that works well for families (my kids love the arroz con pollo) with a HUGE menu and everything is delicious. If you have never tried Colombian food before this is the place to go...yes, it is a chain...but really the food is just so good and the staff is super nice..it doesn't really feel like a 'chain restaurant'. The chicken is great. The maduro is just the best. I love the fried whole tilapia (my husband and I split one usually). My family has been coming here for years. This place is authentic Spanish food and the people here are great. Can be on the pricer side but it's well worth it. Large portions, wildly variant prices on the menu, and totally worth the visit. The food is really, really good. Beware the kids meals because they are huge. The kids menu even offers standard "American" selections like chicken fingers. Spanish speaking wait staff but they're very patient and make you feel welcome even if you don't speak Spanish or are unfamiliar with the food. Ordered the skirt steak salad and it was okay, not the best I had but I was hungry and I paid for it, so of course I will eat it. What appealed to me from looking at this spot here on yelp was the free delivery, so I decided to give the full 20% thats one of the automated choices when ordering online, but the delivery guy was hardly friendly. I ordered the bandeja paisa. Overall it was good but not great. Ive ordered the same dish before in other places and it has been better. Not only that, they charge you extra for chorizo and at other Colombian restaurants it is included in the dish. I also ordered beef empanadas but they were sold out so i settled for chicken. I used to live in Astoria Queens and ordered from the Pollos Mario at least once every few wks.. I was expecting the same from the Hackensack location but I was a bit let down. I ordred the bandeja Tipica but the steak was over cooked and the chicarron was extra fatty.. the beans watered down and the home made hot salsa that I LOVE was different from the astoria location and not as spicey. For the price of all the food you get, it's a steal... but dont expect an orgasm in your mouth thats for sure. Excellent prices, fresh food. I am a particular fan of their marinated/grilled chicken; $5 buys you a half a chicken, and I usually combine it with an avocado salad (which has what appears to be a whole hass avocado sliced into it) for $4.95. Also tried pretty much all their sides. One caveat: not all their employees speak English, and you may walk in on a night when none of the on-duty staff speaks English. Still, they try, and with a clear menu, there should be minimal problems. Addition: Have discovered that the portions of a lot of the main dishes are HUGE. Great place for a typical Colombian breakfast, the chocolate, eggs (huevos revueltos) definitely bring me back to a morning meal in Bogota. For lunch or dinner, a better place is Villa de Colombia around the corner, but you cannot go wrong with any of this place's breakfast choices. When I got home and opened the container of beans I noticed something odd so I took it out and found what looked to be some kind of animal EAR!!!! I stopped by here the other day after driving by it numerous time. I was in the mood for some corn arepas or something. I ordered a chorizo with arepa, an order of tostones and an arepa with cheese....all to-go. When I got home to eat, the tostones had been packed in a styrofoam box so they were all soggy and unappetizing. The chorizo was good although the little arepa was SO hard and chewy. When I bit into the arepa with cheese I noticed that it tasted funny. When I flipped it over I noticed that it had moldy spots all over. Yuck! What can I say about this place.......Damnnn. I come here for my fix of steaks, chicharon(deep fried pork belly), and whatever else is on the menu. All of the food that they serve there is excellent and I am a fan. I usually order the bandeja tipica which comes with beans with rice, carne asada (steak), avocado, chicharon, fried plantain, and a rice cake. I gotta say everything is cooked to perfection no complaints about the food. Another great thing about the place is that they serve big quantities of food for a very reasonable price. The bandeja tipica is around 12-13 dollars and I am very stuffed at the end of the meal. I bring my friends here all of the time and lets say I made fans out of them as well. The service is very friendly and very responsive. Overall go to this place try it out if you are a little low on cash and want something that will fill you up for the rest o the day. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Hackensack by far. Have been here many times and have never had a bad experience. Love the chicken and steaks and man they know how to cook beans. And their guacamole is actually outstanding. Their version of a chicken fried rice is also quite tasty. Very family friendly and priced well for the large large portions. Very nice place. We had a great dinner tonight. We ordered various things but the best was the fried fish and the lemonade. We actually ordered more of these items because they were so good. Very attentive service and relatively fast service. We had not planned to eat here. We actually planned to eat somewhere else that was near here but we noticed the oven while waiting at the nearby traffic light and decided to dine here from seeing the food being cooked thru their front window. Lots of variety. Menu is many pages long and they even offer half-sized orders on various item. Overall nice dinner. You have to try this place for yourself. Scrabbled eggs with rice and beans and coffee all for under $10. Hubby and I ALWAYS split because portions are huge. They have a new bakery section which is amazing. Danish, croissants, empanadas......soooo good!! Definitely try their Yuca Frita.. so delicious. This place can't be beat for price and service and friendly staff. Pollos Mario has great food and service, I recommend the beans they sell here. One of my favorites is Frijoles con Garra, which comes with rice, pork strip, avocado, yellow fried plaintain and a deep pan full of beens. Enough for teo people unless you can eat a lot. The beens has pork inside in case you don't eat pork, be aware. If you come to this place, all servers are very polite, but I highly recommend "Huguito" or "Don Hugo".
