Terrible experience. They held my wife's car for 5 weeks and could not fix it. When we took it to Toyota they told us the compressor they installed was defective and another part they ordered and said needed changing, and made us wait for an extra two weeks, was NOT defective. My air conditioner wasn't working properly so I took my car to our local repair shop and found out that my compressor needed to be replaced. They quoted me almost the same amount we paid for my husband's compressor and evaporator replacement. I was so shocked. The next day I decided to call two shops that our friends recommended (Polar Auto A/C was one of those recommendations), one shop down the street from my parents house, and 2 shops from a Yelp search. Polar Auto A/C was almost half the price of some of the other quotes we received. With such a huge difference in price, I was a bit hesitant. However, my husband's friend had great things to say about Polar Auto A/C so we decided to give it a try and we are so glad we did. Service: Vance is such a funny and honest person. You can definitely tell he's a local guy. He was very clear about price, what he was going to do, what he did, and the amount of time he needed. I have been taking my three cars here for over three years for safety inspections.Q Tips and tricks for being successful show up early in the morning. 99% of the time I'm able to pull right in if not it's usually 1 to 2 car wait. Make sure you have all your paperwork ready when you arrive. Your safety, registration, and insurance. He will also ask you for you vehicle mileage. I normally pay in cash as well. I am usually in and out in 15 minutes or less. He's a surfer and will talk surfing with you if want to chat. He knows all the good spots. read more

The AC evaporator on a relative's 2010 Toyota Camry finally failed after 130K miles. We contacted a few repair shops for quotes and selected Polar Auto for the repair work. Vance is a real akamai guy and made me feel comfortable with his assessment and the planned work. The repair took roughly a week since we told him that the job wasn't a rush, and we had a second car that we used in the interim. The AC now runs cold, and the work includes a 12-month warranty. This was a very informal business arrangement which is based on the trust system. Some folks may be uncomfortable when the quotes, scope of work, and warranty are verbal, but have faith. BTW- Vance also found some cash under one of the seats that must have been dropped by my relative. He returned it to me without hesitation. My Chevy Express cargo van AC stopped working and i didn't know where to bring it for repairs. Polar AC had pretty good reviews so i brought my van there. Vance replaced the evaporator, which in itself is a pain, ahead of schedule. He estimated 2 days but in actuality i was picking up ion the morning of the 2nd day.... His price was unbelievably low...i was expecting a $1400 bill, as that was what i paid previously years ago. On top of that, he mentioned that the car rental agency gave a discount for his customers.. I asked when returning the rental.. and they really did give me a big discount.. Vance saved me money on the AC repair AND the rental car! His professionalism and his obvious desire to do the job correctly is so refreshing in this day and age! I am extremely disappointed with the service I received here. My ac went out a day ago and it has been miserable driving in this heat without it. I came to Polar based on a recommendation from a mechanic and the mostly good reviews I saw. The hours said 9-5 so I called the same day but couldn't get anyone on the phone so I came by right at opening time the next day. The location was kind of hard to find because it is sandwiched in between a battery shop and another auto place and there really wasn't anywhere to park once I got there. The man who came out to meet me (I assume was the owner) asked me what I needed. I told him about my ac and he told me to come back after 11:30am or noon because he was only doing inspections in the morning. So, I left and then drove all the way back out there right at 11:30 per his instruction only to find no one there. I had to ask the battery shop next door where he was, and was told that he had just left and probably wasn't coming back the rest of the day. Frustrated at having wasted my time, I called the shop and spoke with the owner asking again about having my ac looked at. He then told me that today wasn't a good day to look at it but to come back tomorrow. This was not what I wanted to hear, especially after he had just told me to come back later the same day only to just leave. So now I'm stuck having to try to get the dealer to fix it, which is infinitely more expensive, and I'm still driving around in a hot car. Thanks for nothing. I searched the entire island looking for the best person to do ac work on my car and these guys are definitely, without a doubt, the cheapest and the most honest. Vets told me where to find cheap parts and told me how much he charges labor and it was pretty much settled. He got my ac working within a couple of hours and I was very happy since I had gotten the car with a broken ac and I had been driving around for god knows how long in the smoldering Hawaiian heat/humidity without ac. After a couple of months my car battery died and I called him to see if there was someone he would recommend to get the battery changed and to my surprise he offered to personally come out to where I was and jump started my car, then pointed me to the right direction to where I should get a battery. I have recommended him to about 3 other people already and I'll be more than happy to go back to him regarding my car's ac needs. How anyone ever had a negative experience with him is beyond me and I suspect they were simply nightmare customers. His customer service as well as his prices are by far the most competitive ever! Another thing he noticed when I took my car in was that my engine had an air leak which he said he would try to fix even though it was outside his specialty. Ofcourse I would understand if he was unable to fix it, but he did manage to fix it for well under a hundred bucks and now my engine idles perfectly! I could notice the difference immediately. He even took pictures of where the cracks were and the repairs he made. And I could hear the hissing sound of air escaping before the repair when my engine idled a bit funny, and after I came back when the repairs were done there was no slight hissing and my engine sounded beautiful. Like brand new. This guy is extremely honest, hard working, fair priced, and full of Aloha! I recommend him a thousand times over anyone else I've talked to on island. Stay being awesome Vets! RANDY IS AWESOME! I came in for a R12 recharge on my 93' corolla wagon last week. He stayed past closing time to work on my car and he explained to me how the recharge works. We were talking story and I could just tell that he is an experienced mechanic. He offered to fix my mom's saturn as well. What a great guy! In the end, he did not charge me. I tried to negotiate some kind of price, but he just told me to bring in the car when I decide to convert it to R134. Hard to find mechanics that aren't trying to rip you off. if I could give no star I would, I don't even know what just happened. I went there to get a diagnosis of my a/c. the guy was friendly and at first I was impressed because I thought he had found out what was wrong. a fuse ...EASY...can handle that. turns out it's the compressor and he tells me easy can start on em now be done in 3 hours., I say cool he tells me he gonna do me a favor and keep the job off the books for 950$ bucks.......I say you gonna be done in 3 hours? he says yup if not no pay 4 hours later I swing buy wires all sticking outta my hood and nothing new put in......I had to tell him it doesn't look like it's gonna get done he says no still can, wile the management is telling him hey we gotta lock up! I had to physically put all my wires back together wile he disappeared and then he quoted me 700 $ for parts and if I can put em in he will charge it up for free! wtf!....wile I'm under my own hood trying to put my truck back together!!!!!! I noticed the r134 was discharged all in my engine compartment with no catchment also! We were recommended to Polar A/C by a friend who said to use his name to get good service. Didn't work out for us. They agreed to see us quickly, but did no diagnostics. They said we needed a resistor module, but gave us no part number. We drove from Mapunapuna to Ka Uka Blvd. @ Tony Honda to buy the part. We ended up driving back & forth two times that day. After a mistake on part numbers, we waited two days for the right part. The part was popped in, & burned out immediately. We decided to go to Hamakua Body & Fender instead. The whole thing cost us $620.00 & 5 days without a car. If you go to Polar Auto A/C, you do so at your own risk. Never again. read more

I had to purchase a battery from Battery Bill's (located next door) and that's how I stumbled upon them. The worker approached me with great customer service. I needed a safety inspection completed, however, the inspector wasn't available since I came there too early. It all worked out since I went next door first and then to L&L for a snack. The inspector obtained necessary documents and completed my safety inspection promptly. Overall, I had a positive experience. They were professional, friendly and prompt. The A.C. in my car went out while my mom was visiting. Horrible timing! I came here and while he was quick to "diagnose" the problem quoted me $750. He said it was the A.C. compressor and that I would also need to replace A.C. drier. We took it to another mechanic and the real cause was a broken wire and a small leak.
