Finally a poke joint as it should be! High quality fresh ingredients, creative sauces and incredible flavors. I opted to create my own bowl to get to try some unique items I haven't come across before. The berry brown rice was a perfect base for the tuna and hamachi. I sampled the garlic soy and yum sauces (a delish cilantro based sauce) and opted for both! There were 4 different kinds of seaweed and the Kaiso was probably the best I've ever had. Portions are generous and filling. When I chatted with the owner (Jay) who's super personable, I learned that hes also the same owner of one of other favorites Izkaya restaurants in Delray beach called Beg for More. I was in the plaza for an appointment and needed something quick to eat for lunch. I love poke and seeing such great reviews for Poke Jay I decided to stop by. They have a small dine-in area outside and two tables out front for seating. Their menu is small but I like all of the options for the customizable bowls. I decided to choose one of their pre-made options - the Nemo & Iron Man - based on the suggestion of the staff member. I love fresh/raw fish so anything tuna or salmon is right up my alley. The ingredients were so fresh and delicious and the presentation of the bowl was definitely IG-worthy. My only note about these kinds of bowls is I think they always add way too much filler rice. While the quantity of the other ingredients were plentiful there is always too much rice for my personal preference. One of my favorite places in Boca. 9/25 (Sunday) We arrived at 11:45 to find the doors closed and lights off. Opening is 11:30 on Sundays. We called and asked if they were open today ( they are open 365 days per year). A staff member answered said yes we are open. We explained we were there and lights were off and door was locked. Excellent (so called Poke Bowls). You would understand if you had Poke from a gas station in Maui. The only place that has Hamachi, which is always very fresh. The spicy green sauce is to die for. This is, by far, the best place for Poke bowls in South Florida. I've tried them all (or close to it) and nothing can compare. I've been ordering lunch here for the past week and wanted to try it a few times before leaving my review. Each bowl has been been excellent. My favorite has been the tuna and salmon with spring greens, generously loaded with toppings such as onion, tomato, jalapeno, avocado, cucumber, cilantro, crispy garlic and crispy shallots- which by the by, are both awesome. One of my pet peeves with most Poke places is that they mostly stuff their bowls with filler (rice, lettuce or whatever base you choose) and skimp out on the protein and toppings. This place does the exact opposite. Each bowl I've gotten has been stuffed with mostly protein and toppings and has been extremely filling. Best poke bowl , hands down. Place is clean inside. The food bar area with all the proteins and toppings is clean and maintained well - compared to others I've been. Berry rice is a nutritious yummy rice. The proteins are fresh, tons of topping options. The house-made sauces are excellent, and you can get more on the side to go. The avocado is extra, but they give you a huge scoop ( compared to a tiny sliver I got at other places). A tale of two Poke joints. So I recently went on a quest to find the perfect poke bowl (my latest culinary obsession). I recently went to blue Ocean Poké in Deerfield beach on afternoon of 9/18/19- Got the small Poké bowl with ahi tuna & krab - but the portions were quite small, the prices were high (my bowl was over $14) & the bowl wasn't even filled to the top - it was approximately 2/3 full and it was very anemic looking. I was really disappointed when I left that place...I don't feel I got $14 worth of food by a long shot. But to be fair here are the positive aspects of Blue Ocean: 1. They have quinoa (I love that) 2. Nice decor - cute inside - better than any poke joint I've ever been to. 3. The very fit & friendly woman working behind the counter was helpful, offered suggestions and genuinely seemed like she enjoyed her job. Then 24 hours later (9/19/19) I went to Poke Jay in Boca Raton (NE 2nd street). People if you're looking for fresh, flavorful poke in good portions & delicious house-made sauces, look no further! The owner Jay - hand cuts his own fish (delivered daily) and you can just taste the freshness of this fish. All the toppings were delish and the regular sized poke bowl with Ahi Tuna and Krab was $16 (inc. tax). But you're easily getting a ton more food value than blue ocean. Owner Jay has tons of passion about poke (seems to be a recurring theme at these poke joints) & he'll will explain to you exactly what each ingredient is and he even gave me multiple free samples (spoonfuls) of different exotic seaweeds and sauces - this was the fun part of coming here. I was glad people were not waiting behind me because I really got to learn about different ingredients and ask questions about the freshness of the fish (Jay takes a lot of pride in this aspect of his business). To be fair, Poke Jay's decor isn't as polished as Blue Ocean (yet), and they don't offer cauliflower rice or quinoa yet - BUT if you want great poke bowl value, good portions, great sauces and super-fresh fish- Poke Jay wins hands down.
