As the machine had two RAM chips, one 8 GB, the other 4 GB, she suggested that it might be possible to revive the machine if the 4 GB chip was defective. Simply taking it out would leave an 7 GB RAM chip which was sufficient for the machine to run. So she took it out, we rebooted the machine, and to my pleasant surprise it worked. As I plan to buy a new PC immediately, the 8 GB RAM chip will suffice for my needs. Valarie saved me the ~$125 cost of a new 16 GB RAM chip. She refused to accept any payment for her work.
