I decided to give Northridge Electronics another shot to fix my receiver before I drove to Buena Park. This time I called and the woman there said if I had an authorization number they would "have to" do the repair. Again, customer service... not their strong suit. I took my unit in and they told me they were really backed up and it could take 4-6 weeks. That's probably why they weren't too keen on taking on the repair. After 4 weeks, I called to check on the repair and they told me they had already diagnosed it; they were just waiting on the part. A couple days later, they called to tell me the unit was ready. I picked it up, took out my temporary replacement receiver, pulled out my TV stand to access the back, and unhooked everything. As I was hooking it up, I thought, "Weird, I didn't think I had an iPod dock connection." but I kept plugging away (pun intended). Then I thought, "Huh, my receiver only had Zone2, not 2 and 3. Uh oh..." I looked at the serial number and realized this wasn't my unit. I took them a Yamaha RX-A1020, which is a very nice network reciever. They gave me an RX-A2010 which is a top end network receiver. I contemplated just keeping the new unit, but it didn't have 4K pass through and I knew someone out there would be very disappointed, so I unhooked it all and drove back. The gentleman who did the repairs was very nice and alluded to the fact that he thought his front office person might do something like that because of the similar appearance of the receivers (I hadn't even noticed). He gave me the correct unit and I left. In the end, I got my receiver repaired within the time frame and have had no further issues, but the lack of professionalism and business sense at this place is disappointing. I'd give them another shot because of location and the friendliness of the repair man, but I wouldn't be confident in having a good experience. read more

I paid him to look at my vintage amp and adjust the bias. He set my Amp output to 10mV, when the manual clearly states 100mV. He told me that it was a typo in the manual and when I discovered his error, he shut me down. Here's what he said: "By looking at the schematic and understanding the transistor parameters, you should be able to calculate the correct biasing current. I'm not going any further regarding this issue since I'm totally swamped right now." I should be able to? He later threw some technical stuff at me that I'm not qualified to understand. If I was capable of this why would I have gone to him in the first place? AudioKarma and youtube are my sources and I gave this guy several opportunities to communicate why I'm mistaken, but as you can see he shut me down. I think this is a clear cut case of take the money and run. I'm deeply disappointed. I have several amps and my collection is growing, so I'll just find someone else. read more

I was referred to Tom Ishimoto at NR Electronics by a good friend. I bought a 40 year old Marantz 2245 receiver, which worked, but had some issues. Tom went thru it with a fine tooth comb, and called me with his findings and gave me his (fair) estimate. I gave him the green light. My old Marantz now looks and runs like a brand new unit. My "mid-level" Creative T3 Gigaworks Computer 2.1 sound system developed a low volume but greatly annoying static/crackling sound. This was an intermittent problem but tremendously annoying. Another shop took a look and could not identify the problem. Like most manufacturers, Creative wouldn't service it (5 years old) and was nudging me into buying their latest and greatest system. I like the sound of my system a LOT, so I called a high end audiophile shop in Thousand Oaks and asked where they bring their equipment for repair. The audiophile sales shop recommended Tom at Northridge Electronics in Simi Valley. In short, Tom was able to identify the offending DSP microchips and somehow install exact replacements. He suggested alternative options to save repair costs, but, I liked this system so much I went forward with the repair. Tom went the extra miles necessary to make the system functional again. I've been a customer since 2009. Recently, my Marantz 2250B needed some servicing and Tom did a fantastic job on it. Tom did great work on a marantz 4270 that needed some love. Provided specific breakdown of work recommended and I didn't feel pressured to have work performed that wasn't necessary for my needs. Prices were fair and turn around was quick. I expected to be out 3-4 weeks, but amp was back and rocking in a little over a week. Communication was prompt and professional. I had brought in my JVC tuner amp for repair. When I got there, I felt a bit out of place with all Marantz and old school Kenwood and Yamahas laying around. But Tom was super nice. I explained the problem that I was hearing and paid my $50 'see-what-it'll-take-to-fix-it' money. Tom got back to me and said there were a couple things that needed cleaning (which he cleaned), and a couple of things that were out of spec (which he replaced), but that he couldn't find anything wrong. So I took the JVC home. Got it all hooked up. It worked like a champ...until it didn't. A couple days after getting it home, the problem returned. Called Tom. He said, 'Bring it back'. Tom looked in to it for a couple more days and he found it. One of the capacitors would fail when it would over heat - stacked in my AV equip this happened more quickly then opened on his bench. Nothing is perfect, and Tom stood behind his work. What more could you ask for. Consummate professional. read more

What a wonderful find, I had not idea that a fantastic stereo repair shop was just a few blocks from my house in Simi Valley. I have 3 vintage stereo tuner/receivers (amaranth, Sansui & Pioneer) that needed refurbishment, I call Tom, took the units to him and within a few hours they were restored, better than new ( LED lights etc.). The cost was half of what the manufactures had quoted, plus I would have to take the units to somewhere in LA. Tom does a great job of diagnosing and repairing vintage gear, as well as the newer stuff. He can tell if you the repair will be cost-effective. He knows tube gear and surround-sound too. He is an enthusiast himself, and has an extensive background in audio electronics design and engineering. He worked for Marantz, Onkyo, and Nikko in the "golden era". I'd guess that anyone unhappy with him just didn't understand that his time is valuable. He's repaired my high-end vintage amps, and did a great job of re-capping my rare Yamaha 85-lb receiver.
