    Hand pie
    Lindsey S.

I've tried both sweet and savory hand pies and enjoyed them. Unfortunately, I've been served the wrong hand pie now on two separate occasions, but maybe it's just me. Prices seem a bit high for what you get. You'll be spending around $10 for a pie and a drink. Portage also seems to be a popular study spot, with a long, narrow table in the middle of the cafe with plenty of outlets and good lighting. Despite this, I've never had a issue finding a seat like some of the other coffee shops in town. Parking can be a bit more difficult to find in the area, especially during Terrace season.

This is a really adorable space inside the Graduate, perfect for 'gramming if you so desire. It looks like it can also be a popular study space, and I really appreciate the dual usage. here is a meal set where you can order a pie, a salad and a drink for $12, and it's a solid deal compared to paying a la carte. That said, it is a little pricey for what you get. The packaged salad I had had high quality ingredients but wasn't particularly textually varied (there was a lot of spinach), and I think the sweet pies might be a better bet than the savory one that I had which had a particularly high crust to filling ratio, where the filling wasn't really being absorbed by the crust (though I definitely want to check out that Wisconsin Pi!). I swapped out my drink for an iced coffee, which was okay.

Friendly staff, fresh salads, delicious juices. Try the Bluto (pineapple, apple, coconut, and mint) if you can! You won't be disappointed.

Their menu is small but mighty having a little something for everyone. I got a hot Maple Latte with oatmilk. The flavor was subtly sweet but paired great with the espresso. The maple syrup was sourced locally and made in house. I'd be very curious to come back and try the other specialty lattes. My husband got their Homemade Chai Latte. It was cozy in a cup and had nice spices in it. We shared the Bagel Sandwich which was the perfect portion for a breakfast snack. The bagel seemed to have fresh seasoning on it and the flavors layered nicely together. Overall, this was a great coffee, tea, food stop. Its right off Capitol Square but order online for pick up to avoid the lines if you can.

They also had a good variety of merch items (apparel, coffee mugs, etc) to browse while waiting in line. They had a blueberry mint flat white on the menu, but since I wanted an iced coffee, the barista was able to ring up an iced latte with blueberry mint syrup for me instead. Super kind of her to recommend! Unfortunately the latte tasted pretty acidic, and I couldn't really taste blueberry or mint at all. My friend got the blueberry mint flat white (which is hot) and had the same complaints, so it might have just been the syrup. So wouldn't recommend the blueberry mint drinks but would be open to trying something else, since the service and ambiance of the shop was nice.

It's definitely a storefront with no seating, but if you don't mind standing there's an area where you could eat at a counter. I arrived at 9am on a Sunday and by the time I finished ordering, a line had formed out the door. I would definitely recommend getting here early; however, it's also the kind of place where you can't go wrong with anything you order. After a lot of waffling, I ordered the lemon currant scone, peach muffin, and ham and Gruyère bun. The scone was super buttery with a crunchy exterior and soft interior, with the most lovely glaze and lemon zest throughout. It definitely screamed summer. The peach muffin was super light and airy, and not at all too sweet. The crunchy cinnamon topping was absolute perfection and brought the perfect texture contrast. I really enjoyed the bun, which was like a mini sourdough loaf. I do think there could have been a bit more ham, but the caramelized onions throughout made sure that every bite was super flavorful. Next time I'm in town, you better believe Batch will be my first stop!
