The interior is cute with a variety of tea bags, teaware, treats, merch, and trinkets for sale, which recently replaced the front window seating area and now leaves very limited seating (6 or 7 stools, max). The chai I tried was ok but to me it was nothing special. The tone I heard staff tell folks they couldn't sit unless they ordered made me feel uncomfy. One suggestion to resolve this and/or make things clear for new visitors could be to rope the area off and implement a seating system whereby you order first and then sit if room allows (take it or leave it). 4.5/5 This place is on Johnson so there isn't much parking, however come here! I waited too long. Their hours area pretty narrow window. I got the chai latte which is in the top five that I have had in my life. It had the perfect amount of sweetness but the spicy kick carried throughout the entire drink! I will definitely be back. I like that they refrain from having people sitting there all day with a laptop. It's a great place to meet up and have a cozy drink. Wide selection of teas and drinkware. I brought a group to Macha at the Monroe Street location back in 2011. While this setting is less square footage, there are good vibes in this little tea room. I was invited here this fall and wish I had put some effort into learning about the offerings. Sort of took the advice of others and wasn't really happy with what I got. That's my lack of knowledge. I look forward to returning to get the cute little pot of tea and whatever that whole experience was I saw other people having that looks like a lot of fun! I just had tea in a cup and I wasn't overly enthused. I ordered a chocolate chip tea cookie to go that I had the next day that I enjoyed. Also brought special genmai rice crispy treats home and would not purchase again but I commend the experimentation. Also earlier, the staff/owner perhaps, brought Thai basil cookie samples. Oh my - yes to hospitality and those flavors! This particular autumn Saturday afternoon with it's few falling snowflakes across Johnson Street made for a chill view from my window seat. This place is a gem!! We went on a Friday afternoon to kill some time and learned so much. I had my first Hojicha experience and I am hooked. It's a low-caffeine form of green tea (roasted) and I enjoyed it iced with soy milk. It was earthy and well balanced. They had a ton of unique and delicious-sounding tea blends + very cute accessories. The atmosphere was very inviting and the barista was awesome! It would be a great place to hang out and/or work. Teasider is a gem on the near east side. The owner is a tea enthusiast whose love of the beverage and the craft of selecting, making and serving good tea are remarkable. If I go here only once a week it is a slow week. Every fresh made hot tea is an adventure, and the tea sodas on tap are delicious and so refreshing. The Thai Rose and Eastsider are my faves. The addition of premixed tea concentrates is great if you want a pick me up at work you only need to add water or milk to. They also have gorgeous and delicious baked goods on the weekends as well. I would strongly recommend an alternate establishment. The tea is lovely, but the service is cold-hearted and lacks humanity. The overall approach of the staff at the counter is very aloof and impatient when ordering. Further, they prohibit the use of laptops, but there is no indication on the website, only a tiny white sign on the counter that is difficult to see until you sit down after ordering. I live about 2 hours away and wanted a quiet place to sip some tea and address an emergency that required about 15 min of time to submit a resume after what was already a really rough day. I initially pulled out my laptop, not seeing the sign, and tried to address the issue. I was informed that laptops were not allowed and the waitress tried to pressure me into a to-go cup. I absolutely understand the need for seats, but the store was half empty. I tried to get additional time for the deadline, but was unable so I asked the owner for 15 min of laptop time for an emergency and said I would be happy to give up my seat if needed. He insisted that he simply couldn't open that window and suggested I go somewhere else...I can't afford to just bounce from place to place. The tea was a comfort luxury to try and make an awful day a little more bearable. He finally relented and said I could go in the corner and to make it quick. However, by that point I was so upset I couldn't even focus and had to give up. Finally to make the experience that much worse, I tried to get some hot water for a second steep just to try and recenter myself....I was informed that hot water was $2.00 and asked if that was ok. I admitted it was a bit unorthodox considering it was just water and the owner insisted that as a small business they couldn't afford any less in an extremely testy tone. By that point, I was so tired that I just gave up and left. All-in-all, it was just a horrible experience on an already painful day that was entirely unnecessary. I was really excited to find a matcha specialty cafe in Madison. In Los Angeles where I live, you can easily find matcha cafes anywhere. Having to find this place with such a great review got me all hyped up with a high expectation. First things first, five stars for this place? Never. This place doesnt deserve a five star review for lots of reasons. I dont know if the matcha they use is a high ceremonial grade or whatsoever but it just doesnt cut it. I got a Matchiato which is just a matcha latte. It was served in warm temperature so it was rather easy to drink. However, it is not sweet at all. On the menu it says its sweetened but it tastes like its not sweetened at all. Even without the sweetness, it was doable however it really wasnt my style. I rather go to Starbucks or Coffee Bean and get their Matcha Latte. Theres not really anything special about it. Also got us a Matcha Redbean Cupcake and Matcha Twinkie. Matcha Twinkie was interesting since Ive never seen it before. I enjoyed this piece of delicacy the most. It wasnt too sweet but soft and moist. Matcha Redbean Cupcake was good too but it was surely sweeter than twinkie. Paring these dessert with Matcha Latte did complement each other but I wouldnt say it was the best. It was about $3 for each small dessert and our Matchiato was $4 something. It wasnt too expensive but not worth it. I can get so much better Matcha goods with this amount of money. Theres not very many Matcha specialty places with a five star rating. I only know one in Los Angeles and that place is surely a five star place acknowledged by so many locals and Yelp Elites. Its unfortunate to say but this place does not live up to its high rating and they definitely need to do something. I honestly cannot accept the fact why they have such a high rating. Service provided by our server was minimal. She was nice but that was it. Taking our plate right after we finished was unpleasant personally. Lovely shop with nice staff and a calm vibe. I got the Matcha Lemonade and the Honey Mochi Cakes with Red Bean. The lemonade was earthy, tart and not too sweet; just what I was looking for on a hot Spring day. So delicious. The Honey Mochi Cakes had the springy, soft texture of mochi but with a buttery richness and a slightly crispy exterior. The red bean and honey gave it a light sweetness. So tasty! Made my first trip here on a quiet weekday. I was excited about a matcha tea place in Madison, but looking at yelp, I expected food as well. To my surprise, food is only available on FRIDAY and SUNDAY Brunch with menus posted the night before. Worker was very adamant to follow their Instagram @machateacompany to get updates (will post the menus the day before). Ambience: The atmosphere is nice and quiet. Mainly bar seating but a couple of 2-seater tables on the side. The shop products are displayed nicely and I like how the descriptions are clear for their items. TEA: My friend got the Matchiato hot which was delicious! We also ordered loose leaf tea (forgot the specific type) but it also tasted good and warmed us up on the chilly night! Presentation was simple and elegant (pictured). Dessert: There wasn't much selection the day I went, maybe because of a slow weekday and they only had a small red bean pastry available for $3 which I thought was pretty overpriced. I almost don't want to write a review for Macha Tea Company because I love the vibe and how low-key it is and I don't want that to change... but not giving it a review because I love it is a silly reason. Anyways on to why I love Macha. First off, I'm a very regular coffee drinker and I'm embarrassed to say that I used to never order tea when I was out. My mentality was why would I pay $2-3 for a cup of hot water and a tea bag that I could have at home for 10 cents? While I still believe that to a certain extent, Macha is in a whole different league than cafes that sell bagged tea. The amount of attention and precision they put into selecting their tea, and then brewing it, is fun to watch and makes for a delicious cup of tea to drink. In addition to traditional hot teas, they also have some cold drinks on tap like their turmeric tonic, and they make soup-ed up tea drinks like their machiatto (delicious) and chai (still need to try). They have a wall that has most of their tea leaves in little containers so you can smell them to get an idea of what they'll taste like and the staff there is always more than happy to tell you about what teas they recommend or help you find a tea that matches what you're looking for. I also think it's super handy how they have a sticker on their loose leaf tea containers that tell you how much to use, what temperature your water should be at, and how long to steep your tea for. I've come in to buy gifts a few times and loved their selection of tea pots, cups, tea containers, etc. In addition to the baked goods they have every day (i.e. the delicious matcha chocolate chip cookies), they serve lunch on Friday and brunch on Sunday. Their menu changes weekly so check their instagram if you wanna see what they're gonna be serving! When I went for brunch we got the mapo tofu and pork doniburi bowl. Both were really good- super flavorful, made with fresh ingredients, and they tasted homemade. Honestly probably one of the best Asian-esque meals I've had in Madison. The atmosphere here is standout - people are friendly, staff are kind, patient and knowledgeable, and the bathroom is ADORABLE (one-holer. very clean. painted beautifully). One thing to be aware of: If you pay by credit card, there's no option to leave a tip - so bring cash for tipping at least. If you need a fun, off-beat gift, this is also a fun spot to shop. They have tea pots, tea cups, t-shirts (tea shirts? ha!) and other accoutrements. They're BACK! Once located in a cozy two-story converted home on Monroe Street, Macha Tea Co is back in action with a retail storefront on East Johnson Avenue. They've got a full tea bar, a kitchen to produce all of their tasty baked goods (many of which are gluten-free!), some tables and chairs for those who like to linger and enjoy their tea, and of course, their teas and teaware available for sale as well. While they finish getting their kitchen up and running, they've been having pup-up lunches (get it while it's available!) a couple of days a week, and hope to expand to more regular hours in early 2016. In the meantime, keep an eye on their Facebook page for details on hours and offerings. (They're planning a formal grand opening in early February 2016.) I went to their Monroe St location for years, and it was always a favorite place of mine - there aren't many people in this area that know their tea, and these guys are one of them! Anthony greets me by name and staff selects and prepares a white tea for me, Menghai White. Their nicely packaged Dragon Well green tea is an addition to a stash of goodies for my house sitter. The Imperial White Rose is my favorite, always on my shelf, and offered to my clients. I get the Menghai White to go and it accompanies my walk home.
