It hurts me to give this bad review because I'm always the optimist. I came here to grab some coffee/protein after a workout nearby. I ordered their coffee banana peanut butter smoothie. There was only one in person order before me (unsure about mobile orders). I think I waited 15 minutes for the smoothie. Normally I would have assumed it was because they were extremely busy but the counter and line was pretty dead... My meter was almost up and I wound up just wishing I'd held off and gone somewhere else on my way home. The smoothie itself was fine. It wasn't mixed super great and there were some areas that were straight banana or peanut butter. The flavor itself WAS good. It seems like a cute place, but I don't think I'd go back. I feel for the staff, but 15 minutes is a long time to wait when you aren't that busy. read more

Barriques on Monroe Street is a cozy cafe, coffee shop, and wine market. Stopped in for a midweek breakfast and was very happy with the food, drinks, and welcoming atmosphere. My husband enjoyed his breakfast sandwich with egg, cheddar, and bacon. We shared a delicious and fresh scone. I also had a hot baked oatmeal. The individual oatmeal was kinda small, yet surprisingly filling. It was not too sweet and satisfying. So happy that they serve delicious brewed decaf coffee! So many coffee shops only offer Americana decaf (yuck). Prices were very reasonable and service was quick and efficient. Will definitely stop in again! read more

This place is surreal. The food is so so delicious, and generally tastes like it's made with care; don't even get me started on the mouth watering smoothies. The workers are very patient and gorgeous, along with the cozy atmosphere that follows when you go here, which is perfect for somewhere to wind down, and relax. I stopped in on this blustery January evening after work to use a gift card I had received for Christmas. To be honest, in non-Covid19 times, I'm not a huge fan of this Barriques, because there is some kind of humidity issue which is kind of wet-basementy smelling. but I had a really happy experience tonight when I stopped in. I was hoping to find creme de Violette liqueur, but it wasn't in stock at the moment. My birthday is coming up and my favorite cocktail is the Aviation; since I can't go out to celebrate, I wanted to make one at home. Giving up on that idea, I found some sweet vermouth and some Cassis liqueur and brought them to the counter to buy instead. After confirming that my hoped-for liqueur was unavailable, the very cheerful and helpful man behind the counter led me to, wonder of wonders, a lovely bottle of premade Aviation cocktails! I really appreciated the kindness and enthusiasm, and went away a very happy customer. I highly recommend stopping in to stock up your liquor cabinet with interesting wines and a superbly curated collection of cocktail supplies. read more

I had come here years ago and remember it being better, I think, but with repeat trips my memory has been updated: Coffee is burnt, the food is mediocre and the staff give off a superior vibe. The breakfast sandwich has sickly sweet taste to the bun and the egg had that just-microwaved-to-oblivion level of heat to burn your mouth flesh. McDonald's, you may not conjure up the imagery of wine barrels in some French warehouse, but your execution of the breakfast sandwich has these guys beat any jour de semaine. The shop is in a nice spot and has good seating and I'll give it a star for that. I can see how maybe in the past when this seemed like a novel business plan: wine, coffee and food, then it could be interesting to check out, but those days are over. On Monroe St. there are other options for better coffee, Trader Joes sells wine at better price points, and the food at every other establishment on the block is fresh, made on site and delicious. Barriques is stuck in the aughts or something and not in a good way. Go to Bloom or Collectivo even. read more

This cafe is pretty unique; it is actually a wine bar cafe. The environment is nice, the food is fresh and delicious and the drinks are just awesome! Be sure to try their liquor coffees. Tl;Dr: Stay for the coffee, eat a meal somewhere else on Monroe Street. If I could give this experience a 3.5, I would. There are plenty of people studying here, friends socializing, and the setup of this location is conducive to both. Outlets are plenty, and so is the coffee. I had come here before and had a nice cup of chai tea while studying, but this last visit I decided to eat some of the food because the menu sounded pretty good. I had the Wingra with power grains and a pumpkin spice latte. It is fall, after all. While the bowl looked pretty delicious, I was kind of sad that the rice was served cold and was kind of crunchy too, presumably undercooked. The avocado too, was under ripe. I felt like it was something I could have made it home, but with warm rice and properly ripen avocados. Let's just say that I probably will just stick to a scone and coffee or tea the next time that I'm here, but I will be back. read more

As a person who works from home, the free parking (next street over!), outlets galore, great wifi connection, tasty coffee and Mediterranean Plate keep me coming in! But now--- with the new space, so clean and bright, I'm completely in love! Everything I've ever enjoyed about Barriques but with a face lift! Overall a spacious place to do work or read a good book. Outlets available in very convenient places! I ordered a honey and lavender latte and got a slice of the pumpkin chocolate chip bread. I thought the latte seemed a bit pricy at first, but you get a good amount for $4.25 (small). I was a bit disappointed, however, because the latte was super sweet to the point where I had to get a glass of water to drink with it. I was not even of the way through before I didn't really want to drink it anymore. Pumpkin chocolate chip bread was soft and tasty, but also aired on the too-sweet side. I love going to Barriques! They have great tasty drinks from brewed coffee to hot chocolate, everything always taste perfect and just the right temperature. The atmosphere is perfect for studying or if you just want to drink coffee and talk with friends. I also love Barriques because they have a great selection of wine and alcohol and every so often they will do a wine tasting event. They also participate in a wine of the month club, you can join online or in person and it can be as little as $9 per month! Not much of a red wine drinker so all the wines kind of tasted very similar to me :( but other people were raving about the "higher quality" wines we tasted, so there you go. ALSO, this place uses Belly and I just happened to have collected enough points for a free crab dip ...wine tasting and crab dip heyaaaaaaa! To end my review, I have to say. Any time I go to a coffee shop I think "could I work here?". No. Maybe I would get a different feel if I came during the day hours, but it didn't have the right feel anyhow. I came here to study one Friday for a few hours and sampled a London fog and an avocado jack wrap. I like the location and the space however because of the high ceilings sound traveled well and it was a bit noisy for my liking for a study spot. My biggest complaint though is that I'm pretty sure my avocado jack wrap didn't have any avocado in it! Seems pretty basic to include the main ingredient! I might give it another shot but with so many other coffee shops around it's not the top of my list. read more

Nothing but love for Barriques. I pledge allegiance at the Monroe street location and get nothing but great service and quality beverages. Yesterday, I ventured to the Middleton location and was pleasantly surprised by the space! That's one drawback of the Monroe location...its pretty quant and gets busy fast since it's near campus. The Middleton location was busy but had plenty of seating, and a fireplace! Perfect for watching the snow fall. :) I usually go for the Jade Cloud green tea kettle when I'm posting up to study for awhile. Rishi tea is bomb quality, and for around $2 you can enjoy a whole kettle in their cozy shop. The nice baristas will also happily fill up your kettle with more hot water, giving you even more bang for your buck. The cowboy cookies are also a worthwhile treat...they're huge!! After 7pm (I think), Barriques puts their baked goods 1/2 price. Totally worth it as a little study sesh pick me up. read more

Nice, spacious location. I love their chai but am not a fan of their coffee drinks. I'm a member of their email wine group which not only gives good discounts but spot-on descriptions, fun background info on the vintner, and food pairing suggestions. I speak only about the wine. OK, two quick coffee things: good fresh roasted beans and cold-brewed (Toddy) extract for their iced coffee. Back to the wine. It's taken me a while to warm to Barriques. I've been circling through all the usual haunts. Bottom-feeding at Trader Joe's, checking out the specials at Steve's, grabbing unusual stuff at Woodmans. I've always appreciated their $10 wine wall. It helps move wine to an everyday beverage instead of a "fine dining" only treat, something that the Midwest sorely needs to do. You'll find something you'll like and it will be drinkable and won't blow your budget. The rest of their selection is well-considered and there are plenty of excellent wines under $20 for a definite step-up in quality. I finally joined their wine club. They pick a $10 bottle for you every month (which pays for the membership), and then you get discounts on 6-bottles or mixed cases. I just picked up my first pick, a very nice Pinotage from S. Africa. I never would have tried it otherwise and it was only $10. You also get $2 bucks off their wine tastings. I've been to two so far and they've both been well worth it. Check it out! I've been hearing about Barriques for the last couple of years, and its fame is reaching all the way to Seattle. While my fiance Ben is in school here in Madison, and I am still in Seattle, I sometimes call up Barriques and order special bottles for Ben to pick up. Depending on who answers the phone, the employees' wine knowledge has been hit-and-miss, but I understand that they're doing more than just selling wine. Sandwiches, coffee, tea, etc...these guys are busy! And it's no place for wine snobs--just people that love to drink a good bottle! As I'm about to become a full-time Madison resident, I visited Barriques on Monroe St. today to check out the wine selection. My priorities in a new city are as follows: Good coffee? Check. Good wine? Check. Music scene? I suspect "check", but haven't found out for myself yet. Anyway, back to the wine! Barriques has a great "Wall of 100" featuring 100 wines under $10 each. The selection is really interesting and quite solid, with helpful tasting notes from the owner/buyer above each wine. I understand that they also host tastings every Friday night, and I can't wait to check those out! I'm giving Barriques four stars now, but I suspect I'll tack on the fifth and final crowning star after checking out their menu and participating in a tasting event. One last note: as I was purchasing my six bottles today, I was informed that on Tuesdays you can get 10% off of a full case. Bravo, Barriques! read more

Normally I wouldn't write a negative review, but my last experience warrants one! I ordered a pint of beer (16 oz). I was then given a beer that was only 3/4 full (1/4 foam). I asked the barista if she could please fill up the beer, but was told "sorry the managers instructed us to only fill it so high". So I said that I am from Germany, and when you order beer there, they fill it to the level that you pay for. I was told "sorry - you're not in Germany". So if you like rude, condescending staff, and getting 3/4 pints of beer for the price of full pints, then Barriques is your place. The only reason I didn't give 1 star is that the food isn't so bad. read more

One of my favorite coffee/wine shops -- great lunches (the chicken caesar wrap is always a fave, with excellent bacony potato salad), good, affordable wines, and the coffee/tea is always fine. Service is pretty good and generally quick. Nice enough employees and it's a comfy place to hang out for a few hours with a laptop or a book. My only complaint is that I hadn't been in here for a few weeks and see that one of the big long tables near the doors has been taken out with small tables put in its place. Perhaps they did this because too many people crashed out here during the day and took over the big tables to do work, but that's what I want from a coffee shop! Being able to spread out is relatively rare these days and it's a shame to see that limited, especially as a customer conscientious enough to make sure he buys enough from them to justify taking up so much space. Still, great place. Drinking wine and writing a dissertation go well together; if you're aiming to do both (or either), give Barrique's a shot. read more

After doing a class project on Barriques, it has become on of my favorite coffee/wine shops to go to. Not only does it bring a bit "cooler" crowd than some of the other coffee shops that seem to be full of chatty coffee moms and obnoxious students, but the menu caters to a different taste. Between the spinach and artichoke dip and the chicken pesto salad (obviously not coffee shop traditional items) and delightful cafe miel....barriques has the food/beverage category nailed. The huge wooden tables offer lots of room to spread out books/computers, etc, and the dark lighting creates an interesting atmosphere that I always found conducive to getting lots of work done. read more

Overpriced, dry, small, crumbly-breaded sandwiches- both mine and my friend's. Also, mine was supposed to have 'horsey sauce'- which was forgotten and run out to me when I was almost done eating it- no apology, and she quickly ran off. Wow, thanks? The 'side salad'? I used to frequent to this place when I was living in the near West neighborhood. On weekend morning, I'd visit for a cup of coffee (pastries are not so great). On Friday night, I'd be there for glass(es) of wine to unwind after a long week. Their by-glass wine selection is fantastic for both red and white. They cover variety range of wine (dryness, body etc) so you can always be adventurous and try something new. This place also offer wine/spirit tasting. It is rare that coffee shops have amazing food and amazing drinks, but it's safe to say that Barriques has the best damn sandwiches in Madison. (and cookies and scones) The staff has always been helpful, and as someone who spends lots of time studying in coffee shops there is always ample room and a table or two free during the day. The WiFi has never disappointed me, Outlets are sometimes a problem as is cell phone reception. The evening tends to boast a crowd out to have a good time instead of a good dissertation so stick to studying during the daylight hours. I am a huge fan of the wall of 100 because after a day of staring at laptop I usually need a drink.
