There are a few Colectivo Coffee locations scattered around Madison, with this one sitting on the corner of State Street. Interior is modern industrial with exposed raw woods, concrete floors and ceilings with heavily industrial seating and fixtures offset with modern colors and even a neon sign. It's a larger space than you initially think. There is a small seating space up front, a long window counter near the counter, another space in the back and then an upstairs area. So even when busy, you should be able to find a spot. I popped in for a coffee, cold brew with almond milk to be exact, and they delivered. $6-ish after tip for a medium tap cold brew plus milk of choice. Not bad. The coffee itself was decent. Nothing special, but nothing terrible. From counter to pickup bottlenecks pretty easily as the ordering line, people already sitting, pickup orders and folks waiting on their newly placed order all converge in the same space. Gets pretty hectic fairly quickly. Service was solid. Barista who took my order was friendly and helpful. My name wasn't called when my order was ready, but I was luckily watching the counter before I went and sat. Overall, cool space in a great location with a chill vibe and decent coffee. read more

Got a dirty chai, cranberry orange muffin and a blueberry lemon scone. Chai was spicy with subtle sweetness. Nothing all that special I would've liked a little more flavor. Colectivo was a great experience overall. My tennis team was looking to kill some time in between matches, and Colectivo was the perfect place for that. I ordered the hot apple cider and potato bacon breakfast burrito, both of which were quite good. The service is great and relatively fast as well. The vibe was great as well. I've been to a few Colectivos (including Milwaukee and Chicago, and even this location years and years ago), and I remember them being a lot better than my experience today. Sure, my food today was ok, and I definitely appreciate that they have clearly marked "DF" (dairy-free) options on their menu. However, the portion size of my bowl was really, really small, with maybe 1/4 of an egg and a half scoop of rice in it. My latte was fine, but just that, "fine." They do have ample seating (although outlets are scarce), and clean bathrooms, so if you want to simply work at a computer, it's a good place to do that. It was cold today, and snowing, and this shop is close to my hotel, but in the future, if the weather is nicer, I'll likely look for another coffee shop to visit. All in all, this is a so-so place for coffee and breakfast, but I'll also be trying out other options in the area too. read more

Stopped in after the farmers market on Saturday and it's such a cute spot. The vibe of the shop is so welcoming and cool decor. All the workers were nice and helpful. I saw a ton of students studying. I'm a sucker for a good chai and this one is up there in my favorites. They have so many fun fall drinks that looked great. The line was really long but that is to be expected on a Saturday morning. With that being said the line went really fast and my chai came out way quicker than I expected. Colectivo has great coffee. My go to is a cold brew with half and half and a spalsh of mint syrup, it is fantastic. The food however, has declined over the last few years and it makes me so sad. Great coffee with atmosphere to spare. My wife had a mocha and she was super pleased to hear that they had oat milk as a dairy substitute. She said it made the drink. She also loved the foam artwork (see picture). I went with a red eye. It was solid. Not my favorite for flavor, but they must juice up their coffee pretty good, because I got a SOLID caffeine buzz. Also, had a blueberry scone that was just the right mix of dough I was without being dry. Snag one if you need a pastry with your joe. read more

Colectivo is the quintessential Madison coffee house. Snuggled in the heart of downtown Madison, it's a great spot for a coffee and a large variety of breakfast foods and baked goods. There's ample seating on the inside both in the front of the coffee house and also in the back plus a seating area upstairs. The coffee was quite good and espresso was a little bit lighter than I would prefer but certainly good as well. I also tried the avocado toast which was different because it had lettuce (complimented by egg and tomato) on it but overall still pretty good with a pesto drizzle and hearty toast. Overall, I'd recommend this as a good spot to get a coffee, a snack, and possibly get some work done on your laptop. read more

I really liked that they had soy milk along with half and half on the counter to add to your drip coffee, lots of coffee shops upcharge for that! Let's face it, sometimes when you're in college a study session at a coffee shop is the complete opposite. It's a time to indulge in your favorite drink and try out the the pastries baked daily. Colectivo coffee has a crowd mixed between those cramming for exams and those who socialize more than study. The best part is it usually doesn't bother anyone regardless. They have seating right by the door, in the back and some upstairs (a patio too when the weather is nice). One bonus is there are outlets upstairs in back of the wall seating so there's a place to charge your computer/phone. The staff is really friendly and know what they're doing. I've had their espresso shots a few times and enjoyed it. They offer a variety of food from pastries to sandwiches so you can study all day! I decided to try the espresso covered chocolate pastry. It was amazing. Very rich but also baked to the right size so it wasn't too much to eat. This place is usually very busy so finding a spot can be hard. read more

Prefer Colectivo to Starbucks any day... just discovered it while traveling around Wisconsin. Really nice Masala Chai tea.. good kick to it. This one is located at the steps of UWM so full of kids studying at all hours but I found it a nice break on an early Saturday morning, and a much better option than the coffee house in our hotel across the street. (Graduate) They seem to have a kitchen back there so baked oatmeal here is a much better option than Starbucks... website says pastries are made in Milwaukee , which I assume is their home, but I found pastries at this branch just as good as in Milwaukee yesterday. read more

Colectivo is one of my favorite coffee spots in Madison, but this is my personal least favorite location due to the heavy traffic (check out the Monroe Street location!) Otherwise, my go-to food options are the Famous Chorizo Burrito (only a weekly special item now but available quite often lately) and the Avocado BLT. And I honestly haven't had any good luck branching out from those. For drinks, I usually stick to black coffee, but the Cold Brew Honey Almond Au Lait (also offered hot) is a good option if you like nuttier flavors & the Green Hornet smoothie for non-coffee drinkers. read more

1) I arrived somewhere between 3:30 PM and 4:00 PM on Wednesday, July 20. I ordered a turkey club sandwich and a hot chocolate. The receptionist specifically asked me if I would like something to drink, so she can't claim she didn't hear that part of the order. I waited twenty minutes and no hot chocolate came. I finally went back to the counter and asked the same receptionist about it. Far from apologizing, she just stared at me blankly without uttering a single word. Another worker came along and said,"What size?"--also failing to apologize, just pretending to start all over with the order. I wasn't about to wait another twenty minutes. I packed up my sandwich and left. Anyone can make a mistake, but when you make a mistake, you need to apologize. There is absolutely no excuse for not apologizing. 2) Apparently Collectivo no longer makes a distinction between normal orders and to-go orders. Everything is served in brown paper bags, and paper cups. This is extremely environmentally wasteful, disrespectful, and rude, and it's in convenient to have to dig out your food from a bag. 3) The sandwich bread was stale, and so were the chips. 4) This company has the gall to automatically ask for tips beforehand, when in fact there is no service: nothing is brought to your table. I was here about once a week over the summer for a meeting and I've got no major complaints. The outdoor seating is comfortable and surprisingly quiet for being right off of State Street. The mornings provide a good amount of shade from surrounding buildings. The indoors is lovely, has plenty of seating, and features walls that roll up to let in the nice weather and a standing bar that gives people a place to wait for their to-go orders without being in the way. There is an upstairs, but I've yet to check it out as I always forget it exists until I've gotten myself settled in. Bathrooms are single-use and generally in good shape. Staff has always been kind and efficient. Drinks have always been prepared well. "Milwaukee's Best Brownie" isn't very good, but I haven't tried their other food offerings. I'm guessing they're on par with the other Colectivos in town, aka tasty. Two things I'm not a fan of: 1) The music is very, very loud. There are quite a few people who hunker down to work or study and when I am trying to listen to a weekly conference call I have to hold my hands over my ears to hear. I imagine my compatriots are in a similar boat, though maybe I'm just old/need my hearing checked. If I can stay outside it's fine, but on days when it's raining or the shade has given way to sun and my pasty skin starts burning and I have to move inside it's frustrating. 2) Colectivo's practice of kicking me off the internet every hour. Maybe they want more turnover? It's not hard to back up the browser to reload the portal, but sometimes the page won't load and I've got to restart my computer to make it pop back up. Not ideal, especially if I'm in the middle of a project. Overall, though, I can look past those annoyances for a pleasant setting and prime location. read more

Everything about this place deserves five stars. The food is always delicious, there's a wide variety of drinks, and the ambiance is so cute. The menu can be very overwhelming, but the staff is always super helpful!! I LOVE the tomato basil turkey sandwich!! I tried the turkey club once to switch it up, and it was good, but not as good as the tomato basil. Damn you Colectivo for all your aesthetically pleasing cafes! Seriously, your entire wall opens up to the courtyard next to State Street making it one of the coolest spaces I've seen. You make it very hard not to stop in. If only you could deliver better coffee/espresso drinks that truly matches your epic space. Unfortunately, the drinks fall short (don't get me wrong, not horrible but not great either) and your staff is, at times, very indifferent. Wow. The State Street branch has some adjustments to make over its first year on the scene. The feel of Colectivo is quintessentially "State Street" and "Madison". It belongs on State Street. It is hip(ster), fun, and rustic-ly modern. My other positive note is the coffee seems to be right on point for the brand. Tasty, well-brewed! I have been extremely pleased and delighted with use of the space, notably the outdoor sunken patio, garage door-style open during warmer months (which reveal indoor, bench seating...VERY FUN to experience on a calm, warm, spring or summer evening), and upstairs seating spaces for some extra privacy. Adjustments need to be addressed in its product. The food has not been consistent, often overdone/dry, and revealing disappointment in comparison to what I find at every other Colectivo location in Madison or Greater Milwaukee. Example: A tip I recently wrote, included a cheesy bacon biscuit order. The biscuit was unbelievably dry and over warmed/toasted to a deeper side of brown than was pleasing to the eye, and the bacon was also extremely dry. It tasted like a crumbly, tough corn dog. I nearly sent it back to the kitchen. I love the feel of this Colectivo, but the small space is not appealing to me at peak trafficked times (morning, lunch, weekend meal times). read more
