Sadly, I don't really have anything great to say about this place. It started off badly, as we had to wait a while just to get the cashier out to take our order, despite the cooks calling for her to come out multiple times. We were charged for the wrong appetizer (chips, queso and salsa) and it wouldn't have been a big deal, except that the cashier seemed very irritated that I questioned it. The queso was pretty good. The food was fine for what it was. I had the fried catfish and it was just okay. It certainly came across as frozen and not that fresh. My wife had a fried chicken salad and she thought it was pretty good. Overall, we felt like it was fine. We sat outside in the decked area. Everything seemed like it could use a good cleaning. Lights, deck, tables, etc. we're just kind of outdoorsy and in need of a good power washing. read more

Needed a meal driving back Austin to Houston via 71. Looked up what was open at 4:00 on a Monday. Cute place from outside. You can sit outside or inside for the a/c. Hubby got wings with 2 sauces on side and ate all 10. The menu is pretty vast but I decided on catfish sandwich. It was the BOMB! Catfish was fried perfectly. The coleslaw onions and tomatoes and the Texas Toast made the sandwich pretty messy to eat, but I loved the crispy hot fish and the cool creamy dressing of the slaw. A perfect bite included every element and texture. I highly recommend. My husband scarfed down the lemon drop layer cake before I could blink. The sweet tea is Grandma sweet tea, so you might want to cut it some. read more

Perfect place to stop on the way to Austin with the family. There is a big variety of food in terms of a roadside cafe. The service was very good, the place was clean and the food was quite tasty. The "fix'ns" bar for the burgers had very fresh tomatoes, lettuce, onions, etc. I thought the sweet potato fries were very good. I just wished I had tried the onion rings as well, because they looked really good. My kids really liked their chicken strips. Unless something changes, this will be a regular stop for us heading to see the in-laws. read more

Amazing burgers! After seeing their menu and what other diners were eating, that's all we could think about. Nice size patties that were juicy and delicious. Self-serve condiments (tomatoes, lettuce, jalapenos, mustard, ketchup, exc.) Their sweet potato fries were cooked well, not soggy like many places. Good inexpensive beer selection too. They had live music the evening we were there. Really good performer with lively music that fit the rest of the restaurant. The music was out on their cute, sizable patio. Plus, the patio is dog-friendly! To top it off, they have a really awesome sculpture by the patio and the parking, a tree made of thick wire and colored recycled glass bottles. To my surprise, this little small town eatery is delicious. We were driving down to Houston and passed through at dinner time. Had fried pickles and jalapeños, crisp in their catfish-type crunchy breading (not greasy at all). I ordered the Southwest Rolls, which were the bomb. Sort of a chalupa filled with chicken, spinach, black beans, corn, and pico. Really scrumptious. My companion ordered the Chili Burger, which was a cheeseburger buried under a pile of meat chili, on a sweet white bread bun (kinda like Hawaiian bread). Prices were very reasonable for the quantity and quality of the food. The place is clean and well kept. Would stop here again. read more

Apparently, "Hope Floats" and a bunch other B-movies were filmed at this location. They are really proud of that, as they display movie props and signed posters here. Aside from the decor, the food was pretty good. The service was a bit slow though, as we had to wait a little too long. The burgers were about standard fare. I've eaten here several times in the last few weeks. Was honestly very surprised. It is a greasy spoon diner, but a good one. Everything we have tried has been hot and fresh. Just really well done overall. Prices are reasonable especially if you get one of their specials. $5 lunch deals can be on the smaller side from their full entrees, but no less in taste. We stopped here on out way back into Austin and wanted to check out the area. Cute restaurant with a little outdoor seating and they were ok with us having our dogs on the outdoor porch. You go in to the cashier to place your order, and all the fixin's are inside as well. I ordered the hickory burger, and it was super salty and a bit over cooked. Worst bean and cheese chalupa I've been served, inedible. Burned hamburger bun but at least it was edible. Cashier was surly, not friendly at all. To top it off the menu is way over priced. Law of Diminishing Returns: Once really good, now mediocre at best. I've been coming here for about 4 years and each year has gotten more disappointing. The first time my family ate there it was good. The second time, less food, the next time not that good and the most recent time not good at all. The menu is large, prices were OK, but in terms of value, you are not getting what you pay for in that they are charging big city prices for small town quality. The food is ok. Well, no it wasn't. My burger was gross, my wife didn't like her food, and my kid's sandwich made me wonder how it was made. The service is mediocre at best, but remember this is not a full service restaurant. When you order at the counter, get your own drinks and pick up your food when your name is called, why are you tipping? Karma? My karma is good enough as it is. Tipping is certainly not for the demeanor of the people at the counter. Also waiting 10 minutes for them to appear from the back and take your order does not enhance the dining experience. My advice: Don't tip. They don't deserve it. If you HAVE to tip, 10-15% is probably generous enough and maybe more than they deserve I won't be going back. I'll eat in Bastrop next year. Seeing 'Hope Floats' memorabilia doesn't make up for poor service and bad food. read more

Pockets Grill in Smithville is one of our favorite stops, especially when my grand daughter is in town. She loves, loves, loves their fried pickles ( and so do we! ). The food is always good and we love that Pockets is dog friendly allowing us to bring our dog Edsel with us when we dine on their covered porch or out in their patio. read more

Great little place in town for a burger and fries. The atmosphere of this place is laid back and simple. They have pictures and souvenirs on the wall. They have pictures and info on the wall about their role in the movie, "Hope Floats." One of their more prominent roles in movie making and they are very proud of it. How I found out about this place was when I was in town working on a film and some of the crew members wanted to eat here and pick up food for the crew. The feeling you get when you walk in was so welcoming. Most of the staff is made up of local teens and then the owner. Given the population of this town I would say this is probably one of the more popular places that the teens want to work at. The location is right in the center of town on Main St. and I would say it's probably one of the popular places to hangout on a Friday night and/or weekend night. The menu items they focus on are mostly what people are familiar with, burgers, fries, brisket, BBQ, coleslaw and such. The great thing about this place was the small town American feel it had going. Anyone that came in was friendly and happy to talk with everyone. The employees seem to know most of the people that come in and I think that is what makes this place feel so friendly and welcoming, that everyone knows everyone. I really enjoyed my time there in Smithville and hope to go back sometime just to visit. Keep up the great food and service and for those that have never been to Smithville, it's a nice fun road trip to check out and stop on by. The burger was very high quality beef, not the usual fast food frozen perfectly round patty. The buns were good quality bread too. It's a little pricy for a burger and fries but when there's nothing else open on Sunday afternoon you can't be choosy. read more

Seeing as we're locals, our options are limited in this area.. we tend to frequent Pockets. The service is hit or miss although I'd say most often than not you'll be greeted with a friendly face. Pricing is somewhat high for the quality and quantity of what you're getting but again, beggars can't be choosers. I will say that their pizzas are great! I'd also recommend the appetizers.. fried pickles, mushrooms, jalapenos, ect. I've only tried a burger once and that was enough for me seeing as it was incredibly salty. Have lived in the Smithville area over 15 years and have visited the pocket restaurant approximately seven times. 3 at the old location and 4 at the new location. The atmosphere is good, & the pizzas they serve are the best item on the menu. We have never been impressed with the quality of the burgers they always have overdone and dry.
