From the bottom of my heart, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the amazing staff of the Pleasantdale Chateau. Our wedding day was MAGICAL because of them. The venue itself creates an unforgettable experience for guests; you feel you're being transported to the French countryside as you walk through the doors. From our first interaction with Fred, to working alongside Hilda, Dawn and Bryant, we felt so supported and taken care of. I had no doubt in my mind that our wedding day was going to run smoothly because of their high professionalism and organization. In less than 6 months, we pulled off a truly incredible evening that we'll remember fondly for the rest of our lives.  Fred carefully and thoughtfully curated a dynamic and delicious menu that truly represented Peter and I ... our guests were blown away by the food. Every single thing we tried that day was fresh and expertly cooked; the ingredients were so high quality. My absolute favorite thing I ate was their Beggar's Purse pasta ... I wish I could eat that every single day! I am blown away but the true care of their staff - our amazing attendants Atziri and Emily were by our sides every step of the way. They were so lovely to work with, and made us feel so taken care of and loved! (My favorite moment was coordinating a blind-folded Peter to make his way across the Chateau so I could do his hair in the bridal suite. It was hysterical and so very meaningful!). Bryant, our Maître d', was a class act; I must have hugged him 35 times throughout the night because of how smoothly he ran the very detailed logistics of our big day. He was warm, charismatic, and so skilled at keeping everything moving and on time. As a Type A bride, he took any anxiety I had about executing the event right off my plate! Everywhere I went, I was met with the biggest smiles and warmth of their amazing staff.  The Pleasantdale Chateau is truly the BEST in this industry, and I will sing their praises for the rest of my life. What they do brings such joy to so many lives, and they deserve a million thanks for it!!  If you're not getting married at The Pleasantdale Chateau, you are missing out on THE NIGHT of your lives!

We were invited to an affiliated event there and I was so excited and eager to experience the atmosphere and the dining options there. Knowing how explicit this venue is the cocktail hour was nothing special and in fact was lacking a lot of the options that you get to sample at other venues. The bar had all top notch liquor but the bartenders were not offering any exquisite cocktails The food was mediocre and honestly it needed more seasoning. The dessert however was delicious. Overall the grounds are beautiful, the castle itself has such beautiful charm and elegance, but not impressed with the food.

We celebrated our wedding on November 2nd at Pleasantdale Chateau, and the experience was nothing short of amazing! From the very beginning, working with Fred and Santiago was effortless, they instilled complete confidence that our day would be flawless. Their flexibility and dedication allowed us to bring our vision to life in the most beautiful way. As the big day approached, it was clear how organized and prepared the team was. The menu meeting was incredibly helpful, with Fred and Santiago offering expert guidance on crowd favorites--and they absolutely delivered! Drop-off and coordination with Dawn and Marta were executed with precision, removing so much stress from the process. On the wedding day, every member of the Pleasantdale team exceeded expectations. Lesley, our bridal attendant, was phenomenal--always by my side, anticipating every need with grace and care. Guests were blown away by the food and the endless cocktail hour. From the gnocchi to the fresh shrimp, oysters, and lobster rolls, every bite was perfection. Dinner was equally impressive--the braised short ribs were a standout hit. And just when we thought it couldn't get better, the passed desserts stole the show--guests are still raving about the mint chocolate chip milkshakes and cookies! The grounds are breathtaking, with immaculate landscaping and countless photo-worthy spots, it was impossible to choose a favorite backdrop. Every corner of the venue is more stunning than the last. We couldn't be happier with our entire experience at Pleasantdale Chateau and wholeheartedly recommend them to any future bride and groom on the hunt for the perfect venue.

Dear Fred, I am writing to extend my deepest gratitude to you, Santiago, Emily, and every member of the extraordinary team at The Pleasantdale Chateau for making my daughter Courtney Giordano's wedding an absolute dream come true. From the moment we began planning to the final dance of the evening, your collective talent, warmth, and meticulous attention to detail transformed what could have been a daunting occasion into a seamless celebration of love and joy. Fred, your leadership set the tone for excellence. The way you orchestrated every element--ensuring the venue's timeless elegance was matched only by the precision of the service--left us all in awe. Santiago, your calm expertise as event coordinator guided us through every decision with grace and foresight; nothing was overlooked, and every suggestion elevated the day. And Emily, as Courtney's bridal attendant, you were nothing short of a guardian angel--anticipating needs before they arose, keeping the bride radiant and relaxed, and managing the bridal party with a smile that put everyone at ease. To the chefs, servers, bartenders, florists, musicians, and behind-the-scenes staff: your passion was palpable in every exquisite bite, every perfectly timed toast, and every flourish that made the chateau feel like a private fairytale. Courtney and her new spouse Justin, have spoken of little else since the wedding, replaying moments that will live in our family's hearts forever. You did not simply host a wedding--you created a memory that will be cherished across generations. Please accept our heartfelt thanks, and know that we will recommend The Pleasantdale Chateau without hesitation to anyone seeking a venue where dreams are not just accommodated, but brought beautifully to life. With sincere appreciation, Gregg & Donna Giordano Parents of the Bride

Anyway, since then I've been back 3 more times; once for breakfast and twice for brunch. And while I'm confessing, the two times for lunch were on subsequent days. Yeah, they're that good. Actually, their chicken salad on a croissant is the best I've ever had and in my advanced years I've had a crapload of chicken salad. The have a nice sized coffee bar, decorated beautifully with some pretty delicious looking pastries. I'm on an anti-sweet phase so I'm basing my opinion on only on appearance. Then there's a seating area when you can eat, served by a friendly attentive staff and an adjacent boutique area where you can purchase housewares, clothing and other cool stuff. I'm not in Maplewood all that often, generally when I'm shopping at the equally awesome City Workshop but when I do, I always make sure to hit up Perch. You should too. 1/2 star deduction because they don't offer fake sugar, just that Stevia crap which is gross.

The wall frames and Christmas decorations are gorgeous and there are tables, with comfortable seating, on one end of the Cafe. I ordered the following: Matcha White Hot Chocolate (a traditional matcha latte blended with white chocolate sauce), Snickerdoodle Latte (A traditional latte, blended with brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla syrup). Both of these were served at the perfect temperature, were richly creamy, and served in large mugs. I also ordered a Carrot Cake Muffin and it was very good. It was moist, each forkful had a decent amount of walnuts, and the frosting was exquisite. Once you're finished with your food, don't forget to stroll through the entire cafe. You'll probably find something that will pique your interest. Either way, try to make time to enjoy it all.

Van Vleck House & Gardens

EVENT VENUE REVIEW ONLY:…read more Last night, my husband and I attended a board meeting held at Van Vleck House & Gardens. I've driven past its gates many times over the years, but this was my first opportunity to visit Van Vleck in Montclair. The meeting took place at 6:30pm, but the hour leading up to it was allowed for check-in, picking up name tags, and a light cocktail hour with food and refreshments. The organization had the check-in outside of the main house's entrance way. When we walked inside, there were cocktail tables covered in white cloth and adorned with floral center pieces and tealight candles. There was a buffet table in one of the first floor rooms to the left. There was also a bar setup in that room, as well as some seating. The library was rearranged for another bar setup and more cocktail tables. The library has windows that let in natural lighting and there is also beautiful fireplace. The catering and bartending team did a great job. The food spread was high quality and delicious. My vegetarian husband gave two thumbs up for the butternut squash ravioli, mushroom penne, and goat cheese salad. The bartender in the library was great. The people offering hors d'oeuvres were all professional and kind. It was a lovely hour before the meeting. The meeting was held in the room where most likely wedding ceremonies or event activities take place. That night, they had a stage set up for speakers and performers, and white wooden fold-up chairs for attendees. The room acoustics are good. At this meeting, there was short musical performance from two string musicians, and you could hear every detail of the notes played (i.e. great sound). After the meeting concluded, attendees began to exit. There were desserts by the front entrance for people, which was a nice surprise. It's a very special venue. My only note would be - and it's because I'm always looking out for this stuff - the pathway from the front door to the gate opening has very low lighting. Our meeting ended at 8pm and it was already sundown. While my husband and I were fine, another attendee exclaimed how it was so dark. We offered the flash lighting feature on our phones to help her out and lit up the path to avoid any falls. This may not be the usual for events as I imagine many people have them during the day to enjoy the lush gardens and natural beauty of the property... but I'm just saying should this apply to you.

There aren't many walking trails available, but nice flowers, trees, and open areas to roam around for a bit. It's a nice spot to go and enjoy some outdoor time. It isn't someplace that you could really get some farther walking in. But nice mini escape.
