The last time I dined at Plaza Azteca was when they first opened in 2009-10. This was before the proliferation of smartphones and review apps. First things first, our server was great - warm, friendly and soft spoken. She checked on us promptly without being intrusive. I think we could all learn a thing or two from her! Once your seated, complimentary homemade chips and salsa are served. It's always nice to have a little something to snack on while you wait for your meal. I ordered the kale salad with shrimp - very refreshing. Fresh kale on a bed of lettuce with shredded cheese and croutons. The added shrimp which circled the rim of the plate was well seasoned and juicy. On to the main course. I ordered steak tacos which came garnished with onion and cilantro, the traditional Mexican way. The meat was missing something. I'm not quite sure what though. Lack of seasoning or maybe just overcooked, nonetheless they tasted great once I squeezed lime on them. For dessert, I ordered Xango, which essentially is a fried cheesecake. It came drizzled in caramel and chocolate sauce with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Utterly amazing. 4 stars because I think the dishwasher needs to be retrained or maybe the servers needs to double check the utensils before setting the tables. Once I got home, I was surprised to find a lot of onions in my quesadilla which resembled a taco rather than a quesadilla? Luckily I double checked it prior to consumption. This was our first trip to Plaza Aztecs and the service was great! Tiffany was so pleasant and cheerful. She made our experience very enjoyable. This is maybe the best the example of a "chain" you will find. The exceptional service by our favorite bartender/server Chevy, coupled with really good food and a great atmosphere. Because this is close to my office, my Team and I repeatedly choose this for birthdays, impromptu happy hours and sometimes just lunch and it never disappoints. Plain and simple. This place was unbelievabley delicious. First off any mexican place that actually has shredded beef on the menu is already a 4 star in my book. While on our way home we had to stop to refuel and thankfully Yelp pointed me in Plaza Azteca's 4 star way. Okay I admit this place is a total novelty, cheesy and very "Rio" or "Guapos" like, reference for my NOVA peeps. Totally grimey too, not dirty, grimey. Just runned down feeling. But who cares? The food is outstanding. They served up the best queso I've ever had... and the right way. It came out on a sizzling hot fajita iron plate loaded with spicy sausage. We were just in awe of it's crackling beauty. Gobble, gobble. Gone. Next up our entrees. They were both delicious and the portions were huge. I wish we had more legit places like this near us in DC instead of places that feed and cater to hipsters or the next big fad. Just gimme my damn shredded beef! I'm partial to the fajitas. They have a guacamole guy who comes around and makes it up fresh at your tableside. I like anything fresh like that and it adds to a festive atmosphere. Probably one of the worst restaurants I've eaten at. Three of us went and all of us experienced gastric distress for hours afterward. I asked for now sour cream on my meal and of course it came with sour cream drizzled all over. The waiter assured me they would make me a new meal and not just scrape it off. We tried it today; I had tacos al pastor which was served with pintos. Very good! Also the best mango mojito I have had, anywhere. My wife had fish, scallops and shrimp with a delicate creme fraiche sauce. She said she like the scallops and fish over the shrimp. The flan she had was very creamy with a great caramel sauce. Our drinks and food were served pronto and we were pleased to notice how many Hispanic families were dinging there as opposed to just gringos looking to gorge on wet burritos!! Love Plaza Azteca's freshly-made guac! It is the best around by far. We always seem to get the same guy making it - he must squeeze in a lil magic, 'cause it's always incredible. We actually order three molcajetes' full: one to eat there, one to take home, and one for my sister-in-law, who has developed a dangerous addiction to the guac. Azteca's new menu did delete my favorite dish- grilled chicken with corn and roasted red peppers- but their fajitas are fierce. Great Mexican grub! Very pleased with our first visit there. Staff was very attentive and took the time to go over the extensive menu with us. The quality and quantity of the food very both very good. My burrito was about the size of my mailbox! The decor was not what I expected, since I read some other reviews and thought I would find a more festive, colorful interior. It was, in fact, a subdued atmosphere, and it was very similar in layout to the old Lonestar steakhouse that used to be at the same location. The place is okay. The table side guac is a novelty, and it wasn't especially good. I ordered the Durango which was a cheese quesadilla, mushroom tortilla-thing, and a mashed potato enchilada. I asked to sub the cheese quesadilla for fries because I don't eat dairy. The order arrived and the rest of my food had cheese in it, too (not mentioned on the menu). Maybe I should have asked, but is it a stretch to expect the waitstaff to maybe say, hey, wait a minute, the rest of your platter has cheese as well. So the fries were tasty. Sigh. Bathrooms were nice and big, which was great because my mom was in a wheelchair. Other than that, not really worth the $80 we dropped on 5 dinners. read more

Plaza Azteca was located conveniently close to the Days Inn in Reading, where we stayed during the recent Reading Air Show. We've stopped here in previous years. While the food is milder than some of the more hard core "authentic" Mexican eateries we've visited, the dishes here are nicely presented, hot and fresh. We noticed many diners opting for guacamole made at tableside, which looks like a favorite. On this most recent stop, I ordered a sampler plate of three different enchiladas (Enchiladas Noretenas). It included a pork enchilada with red sauce, a chorizo and potato one with cream sauce, and a chicken one with a green sauce. The staff is friendly and the service is prompt. I was looking for a place to take an out of town friend and then remembered Plaza Azteca. I hadn't eaten there in a number of years, and I am sorry I didn't go back earlier. Ordered a frozen peach margarita which was delicious. They brought out tortillas and a white dip and salsa. I've read mixed reviews on the white dip, but I liked it, especially when combined with the salsa. Then we got the table side guac. I've made my own guac for a while and I'm so glad I'm on the correct path. It was spicy and creamy and delicious! It didn't take long for us to get our entrees. I got a mixed fajita and my companion got the carnitas. Both were large portions, neither of us could finish and they were both very good. I will definitely go back to PA. read more

He had to ask us like three times if we wanted it mild/ spicy.. Cause I didn't even know he was talking to us.. Then put the tip jar right in front so we (including 5yo son) couldn't even see what the hell he was doing.. What's the point of making it table side if all you see is a tip jar? $7.99? You at least have to let us watch if you want a tip. Waitress was so-so.. Messed up a no pepper order.. But replacement came out quick.. Had to ask for refill... It had been a long time since we have had good Mexican. We used to live in the south where authentic Mexican is on every street corner. I must say that this restaurant was pretty close to what we were used to. The Chips and Salsa were brought out as soon as we sat down. Not only that, they had this spicey, white dip that was delish! Plaza Azteca is my favorite place for Mexican in Berks County. Yes, Plaza is part of a chain, but it's a *small* chain, not a nationwide deal like Chi Chi's used to be be. 99.9% of the time I know *exactly* what I am getting before I walk in the door. I *love* the #19 Combo (two chicken enchiladas with lettuce, pico de gallo and sour cream. Served with rice and beans.) I'm drooling as I write this... On the lunch menu, the combo is a little smaller, served without the beans and goes by #6. ;) My other entree of choice is their Enchiladas De Mole (three chicken enchiladas with mole sauce. Served with queso fresco and a side of rice.) The tortilla chips come with two different salsas, you get the traditional red tomato one like you are expecting, but they also give you a white sauce (it's basically a spicy ranch). We really like them both. They do have outdoor seating if the weather is nice enough. This particular location used to be a Lone Star Steakhouse back in the day... read more

About the best thing that I can say is that the service was really good. I was excited to see "carne asada" on the menu. I have had it in great Mexican restaurants across this country, and particularly in Mexico. I should have been skeptical when the menu said "ribeye" meat. Carne asada it's typically, and should be made with either skirt or flank steak. I got two circles of meat that looked and tasted like rubber. Please don't ever get that plate here. The chips and salsa were okay, and the ranch sauce that accompanied the salsa was more like mayonnaise on steroids. The fried ice cream was all right.
