Came here to eat one day and I quickly realized that they have so delicious enchiladas suizas. I started chatting with the waitress there and she was very friendly, she mentioned to me that they do catering for parties so it got me thinking of ordering some food in the future. Since then, I have returned to eat here with family and friends many times. The waitresses seem to really know their regulars and even the cooks sometimes come out and have a laugh with them. Playa Baja No. 2 isn't as good as their first location. I'll give it that it's a lot roomier than their first location. And if you read my review of #1, you know we used to have our staff meetings over lunch. We did this a lot here as well. Especially because our staff grew and we overtook their larger round booths. One reason I have yet to return is because of the drama they had. Like I said, we used to go there A LOT. Anyhow, we went to eat and it was closed. I got scared at first thinking that they had been closed down by the Health Dept. which puts a restaurant on my Do Not Eat list. Well, it turns out it was worse. One night, and I'm not sure if there were any patrons, someone walked in and shot the cook and killed him right in the kitchen. My parents told me it was on the news; I never saw it. Anyhow, while it doesn't have any effect on the food, I still feel uneasy going in there. My coworkers and I returned one last time after the shooting and we all got sick. There Pollo Mole here is sooooo yummy, Its a little spicy but the chocolate does help mellow out the spices. I love their mole so much, I only buy that whenever I go. The only reason why I did not give them a full "5 Stars" is because the people who work there, always seem to be super slow no matter who you get or the time you go. This is one of my favorite hole in the wall restaurants in all of Los Angeles. This place serves some of the BEST salsa that you will have served at your table. The decor is something out of a Mexican Brady Bunch episode but the food is very good. The Shredded Beef Tacos are incredible here. Their Carne Asada Soft Tacos are great as well and they are very big. I tend to judge a Mexican Restaurant by it's rice and beans and their rice and beans are some of the best served in town. They also have some very good lunch specials so if you work in Montebello and want to try someplace new for lunch, I"d definitely give this place a shot. A bit of a dive. But hey, once you dive into the best chicken mole enchiladas you've ever tasted you'll forget all about the sirens. Visit Playa Baja 1 or 2 and you won't go anywhere else when you're in the mood for chicken mole enchiladas. Honestly I've never seen them at any other Mexican restaurant so you can bet it's a hard dish to find. If you've never had chicken mole enchiladas it's time to give them a try! You'll find very authentic Mexican food here. However, when I find a rockin' dish at any eatery I stick with it. That may sound boring to you but it damn well saves me a lot of disappointment and money down the toilet. Very few restaurants do everything great and every place has their specialty dish. I strongly believe Playa Baja's specialty dish is the chicken mole enchiladas. Ever eaten at one of your favorite restaurants and one day you decide to cheat on your ace in the whole and take a chance on a different dish? And what happens? You're "dish"appointed. You should have stuck with what you knew and loved? FYI. The same rule applies to love relationships. As a rule of thumb, for me, the further the restaurant the fewer dishes I'll try there. The only thing worse than being "dish"appointed at a favorite restaurant of mine is when I have to travel an hour both ways to be let down. You'll notice I know more about the menus that are adjacent to the city I live. I will never be capable of visiting any one restaurant enough times to sample everything on their menu or even a quarter of their dishes. Hell, unless I'm at my Grandma's house it would be impossible for me to have more than a few favorite dishes on a menu. So at Playa Baja it's chicken mole enchiladas or nothing for me. The chips and salsa are great. Refried beans are great and always a hoot. Rice is delicious. They have beer at Playa Baja #2. We visited this spot a few times during lent and the cheese enchilada combo hit the spot. Its super close to home which makes it convenient for us. It's small and cozy, and the servers are nice. It isn't the most spectacular food you've ever had, but it's yummy enough to be repeat visitors. read more

Honestly, I need to figure out what's around my area more often. Playa Baja #2 is just across the street from Beverly Hospital. You wouldn't think much of it, since the outside looks like it's been abandon, gated up, and there's no cars parked in the front of the restaurant. But I'm glad a friend picked this place for lunch. For sure, get the beef taco plate. It's super delicious (a bit on the greasy side, but that whats makes it super yummy =X) You get house salsa and chips to munch on while you wait. Never had a problem for years until the service was slow the other night. I ended up walking over rand giving the server who was chatting behind the register. Then she started coming by every few minutes saying "Everything ok here guys?" in a loud tone. By the time the food arrived it was obvious she was mad - owners daughter syndrome ? The asada tacos were made of black meat that had been on the grill all day - greasy and inedible. My friend and I were going to share them - glad I didn't try them - he didn't feel so good later. My family and I have been coming here for years. The service is always great and my mom is a regular that when she comes in to order, they give a coffee cup size of salsa to go with the family order of tacos. Their hard shell tacos are excellent and serve with a generous helping of cheese. Their camarones de ajo is muy deliciosa!! When ordering to go, they dont put it in those styrofoam plates but they actually get a good size paper plate and line it with foil and even make dividers so that your beans don't mix with your rice and main dish. The foil helps keep it warm on the drive home so by the time you get home, the food isn't room temperature. read more

One of my cousins brought me here last year because it's very close to where my aunty lives. I had a combination plate with a chicken enchilada and two tacos. I LOVED it! Everything was tasty & so cheap too! BUT when I was in town recently and had lunch here again, I was really disappointed :( I ordered the exact same thing, yet it was drastically different from what I remembered having just a year ago. The food was oily and pretty bland. My sister didn't care for her carnitas burrito (dry and salty), and my cousins didn't finish their food either. Horrible experience here! staff doesn't even know what is and isn't available on there own menu. Made a phone order with my wife, when we showed up they tell us they have ran out of what we ordered. It would have been nice to know when we ordered it over the phone so that we could have ordered something else altogether. It really cant be that hard for them to make a note by the phone of what is not available. On top of all this cashier was rude as if it was our mistake. read more

I enjoyed eating my carne asada burrito here and to go nothing came close to it but on my last visit I was really disappointed with pretty much my whole experience. The burrito cost me $6 and for the price I don't believe it's not worth it. The meat used to have flavor, now it just tastes grilled and the quality of the chips is not that great either. Tastes like they use their old tortillas. Also, When I was waiting I heard one of the employees tell the other "and this one, what is she waiting for?" (In Spanish is sounds a lot meaner like I'm some burden to her). Plus I am almost sure I got ripped off because when I took a look at their menu I saw they sell it for $5.25 and like I said I paid $6 EVEN. my total should have been around 5.75 it's a quarter than it should and not cheap just don't appreciate being taken for a fool. By far the best shredded beef tacos i have eaten in los angeles...and when it comes to tacos i'm a snob..so what makes the tacos here great..well it's two things..the most important to me..the meat and the shell..the meat has a great flavor & a great texture..its not stringy, you know when you take a bite and you have pulled out half of the meat with the first bite? i hate that..doesnt happen here..second the shell is homemade, perfect shell....w/lettuce & tomato & shredded monterey jack cheese..this is perfecton to me, as far as tacos in an eating establishment go... only problem is the service is a bit slow..drove my dad crazy...but the food is worth it..the guacamole needs a little salt, but hey thats what the salt shaker is for. read more

Had the chicken taquitos, wife had the beef taquitos and my little one had caldo de res. The place gets busy in the morning on weekends but we went after church around 1:45 and it was busy but we sat down right away. The plates are ample and come with two tacos, rice and beans. It's spot on. The chips and salsa to start are also solid. Next will venture into the seafood which sounds good but not so much in the winter. Maybe early spring. read more
