Just getting to this place is an adventure but if you make it through a parking lot sized for a fleet of smart cars then you are in for a real treat. East Los Angeles is filled with Mexican food but finding a legitimate non pace picante sauce with chips spot can be hard. I come to playa baja exclusively for the Red Snapper fried with a garlic glaze. The presentation of the entire fish on right in front of you isn't for everyone but the combination of rice, beans, cheese, and a few french fries is amazing. My family and I eat here almost every weekend after going to church. This little place is too small for all 6 of us, so we are satisfied with take out. We call ahead and pickup our mexican morsals and enjoy our food and then stumble over to the coach for a good Sunday nap. You can test the quality of any mexican food place by their salsa...Playa Baja has a nice chips, guacamole, and salsa order. The flavors are top notch and we get it every Sunday. The huevos rancheros are worthy of a try, along with the huevo and bacon plates, that come with beans and sliced papas. This is our regular go-to local place, food is always good and the staff knows the regulars, always a warm gre, even for take out. Food is good not commercially prepared. Dinner time for my youngest means he gets to pick whatever he wants as long as he finishes his meal. So he asked for shrimp soup and I yelped this spot. It is located on Beverly Blvd. right across from the hospital and it looks really dead from the front. We actually drove past it and had to turn back. The restaurant has plenty of parking in the back and is pretty well lit. I think this place would benefit from new windows and some advertisement along the front because it looks closed from the street. Once inside it is well lit and very clean looking but nothing fancy. We noticed that there were only 2 customers and two rooms to dine in. Our waitress was amazing and very friendly I wish I could remember her name but she was so nice to my son. My son ordered the shrimp soup and my wife ordered the chicken enchiladas and they were both satisfied. My wife's enchiladas came with green sauce and they were just okay. The chicken was lacking seasoning but it wasn't bad neither was the sauce it just wasn't memorable. The rice and beans are tasty but nothing to make me want to come back. My midget ate the 7 large shrimp and some of the carrots but did not finish the broth which had me wondering how much he enjoyed it since he normally can devour a large bowl of soup veggies and all. So we paid about $25 for two people with 2 drinks and left full but not impressed. We wouldn't mind coming back but I don't think we will put it on our to do list. read more

Food is Overpriced. I ordered 2 flauta tacos and they were simply gross,they are wrapped in double tortillas .the chicken flavorless and simply dry. They charged $8.59 for that. Can sodas are $2.50 and their burritos are bad as well. The servers mock at you as if they know the food is overpriced and bad. Very bad customer service. Don't need them. read more

I love Playa Baja - one of my favorite mexican restaurants - up until last Sunday evening when my husband and I were enjoying our chips, salsa, guacamole and a HUGE cockroach invaded our space. I'm talking a roach with wings...UGH!!! Yes, I know all restaurants have insects but I don't want to see them. Do something about it!! I asked the server to cancel our order and I told her why. The look she gave me, she knew exactly what I was talking about. What a huge disappointment. I'm so disgusted by it. I have to agree though - food is great. Too bad there's roaches which means they're more than likely crawling on the grills and counters...YUCK!!! I can't get past it. read more

I wish I could give two separate reviews for Playa Baja. Breakfast would be a 5-star and lunch would be a 3. So here you go with a 4. This place serves fabulously priced breakfast specials that are delicious as well. They come with eggs, potatoes, beans and tortillas, and one kind of meat. I always get the carne asada. Make sure you ask for thhe special, since they have a larger size for a higher price. The coffee is usually great, as is the service if you get the really cute waitress. She always remembers my order when I come in, and she seems to never have a bad day. read more

Don't think we will be coming back. We both ordered the Pescado Zarandeado. The fish was full of bones, which it would be ok if the fish would have been cooked correctly. The fish is to be cooked on a griddle and the skin should be crispy and the flesh should be soft. Not what we obtained. The fish was lightly cooked and the skin was soggy. We also ordered a dozen oysters... I love oysters but after 1, there was no way I wanted anymore. They had a bad taste to them. Everything is soooo good. I'm a regular here. I recommend the enchiladas and the menudo is very tasty as well. You can even get the menudo without the meat if you prefer to do so. In addition to the good being delicious it is quite affordable. Give it a try and you will get hooked. read more

Whenever I am in the mood for some Mexican food I always find myself heading over to playa Baja. I was introduced to Playa baja by an old co-worker who is a Mexican food fanatic. I used to eat here with him once a week minimum. Now I just go whenever i am craving my favorite mexican combination plate. Beef taco, Chicken Enchilada (sucia), Chile Releno, & rice and beans (of course). Ive had a few different things at Playa Baja before and most of them have been awesome. The asada tacos/burrittos are tastey and a decent size. Chicken is good, but some people might say its a little dry. Their shredded beef tacos comes piled with cheese. Reminds me of eating tacos at my grandmas house . Moist and Crunchy. Be aware the carnitas are very fatty so if you dont like them like that stay away. I almost forgot to mention the best thing of all the SALSA. Salsa here is amazing i could just go there and eat chips and salsa. Blows La Tolteca salsa and chips out there water *barf*. The only bad thing about this place is sometimes you get slow service. You'll be sitting there eating ice out your cup and in desperate need of a refill. read more

If your looking for Grandmas tacos and beans or grandmas breakfast, This is the place for you. The hardshell beef tacos are the best. Very generous portions. The breakfast comes with potatoes instead of rice (who eats rice for breakfast?) They do serve great rice for lunch and dinner. The salsa is freshly made and the Menudo is great, especially if you are like me and only eat the hominy. You can order with our without meat. Chicken Mole Enchiladas and the Campechana (seafood cocktail) are my husbands favorites. We've been eating there for 15 years. and will continue. read more

I am extremely disappointed in the food and service at Playa Baja No 2. I along with my family and friends have been patrons for many years...Today I go to have what I thought would be a nice lunch with my son. First there are like three tables to serve and we are left waiting for the longest time. Than I order some of their beef cocido and my son orders a burrito plate. What I get is a bowl full of Fat and my son gets a Hair in his burrito along with a filthy fork. What is worse is the bad attitudes of the servers when we bring it to their attention... Needless to say I will not be going back or recommending Playa Baja No 2 to anyone ever again...I guess you can say that the whole customer experience left a bad taste in my mouth. First off the seats are too far away from the table. We ordered the Molcajete for two people and it was not like it was suppose to be. It was a bowl of cheese stew when it is suppose to be more like a non-cheesy red sauce stew. The food in the stew was fine except the chicken had a lot chewy fat pieces. So the food was pretty decent, but it was covered in cheese sauce, which ruined everything. It's like we ordered Fondu, which is nasty. I will never get that Fonpoo again.
