I am big on thrifting and consignment shopping as much as possible, not only to save money but also because it is beneficial for the environment. I frequently head to Plato's closet as they have a very large selection of clothing , but it can be quite overwhelming and require a good amount of time to sort through. I have never had any issues with them until today. Today was the first time I sold with Plato's in a few years, and I was extremely disappointed. I had some very high quality and new with tags items, and many of them were not accepted due to them being "out of fashion" when they were just bought this year. Furthermore, for the clothing they did want, they would only give me $1-4 for each item, when some of the items are worth $60. When I inquired about this to the worker assisting me, she told me that they might as well buy them or else no one will. This had me taken aback, as I know for a fact that I can sell for greater online, but wanted to try out Plato's closet. This seems a bit rigged to me, and just unfair. Plato's is the best second hand clothing store that I have found in this area! I can spend hours browsing. I purchase bags full of clothing every time. Clothes are in great condition & have really fair prices. I skip over quite a few items, since most clothing is geared toward teens, but it is worth the search once you find yourself a gem. It's no secret that I occasionally enjoy flaunting my man humps by strutting around town in a nice pair of high quality jeans. Therefore, after buying a pair of Joe's Jeans at A Step Apart, I figured I'd try Plato's Closet to see if I could find something nice for a fraction of the price I just paid. I wasn't expecting much from this place, so I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in and saw a "designer jeans" rack right in front. I sifted through the rack for a while, seeing some 7s and Citizens that I liked, but then I realized they were women's' jeans. Fail. Hoping the men's' section would be just as promising, I moseyed over and browsed the neatly arranged racks of jeans. Since Plato's buys their clothes from people, rather than getting donations like Goodwill or Salvo, the items are a significantly nicer. They have to turn a profit, so I would assume they probably don't buy anything they don't think is going to sell. The result is a decent amount of nice clothes at a pretty good price. While I found a couple pairs of Diesels, none of them were my size and they looked like they were from the mid-90's (which they probably were). I think the 7s I tried on were fake and had a terrible original hem attachment, so even though they were only $25, I decided not to get them. I did, however, find a nice pair of dark, hardly worn, straight leg Paper Denim & Cloth jeans that fit really well. At $30, they were about 1/3 of what they would cost new. Although PD&C jeans aren't as exclusive as they used to be, the denim seemed good and the price was right. This is a great place if you like normal, every day jeans, like Levis, Lee, Abercrombie, etc., and you don't care about having the current season's collection. On the other hand, if you're looking for the latest, most premium jeans available, you could be disappointed. You might also find a gem. read more

Not the best Plato's location I've been to. The clothes aren't bad- I've purchased new sweaters and shirts there for about $8. However, a lot of the clothes are American Eagle, Hollister, or Abercrombie, which are brands that I don't really wear and are geared more toward middle or high schoolers. Trying to sell clothes at this location is a total nightmare. The first day I went in, it was going to be about 5-6 hours. Whew! No way. So, I tried again with a lot of clothes and they took one pair of pajama pants and three necklaces, all for $8. The other stuff they said was either "not the brands they were looking for" (I brought H&M, American Eagle, Express, etc) or "too outdated" (although the things they bought from me were some of the oldest I brought along!!!). So I honestly wouldn't bother even trying to sell clothes here. Not worth it! read more

I don't recommend this location at all. The clothes there are very gross and very used and out of style, yet I brought in a well known brand dress new with tags which I bought in July 2019, and they only gave me $5 for. They take the clothing and sell it for a much higher price than what was given to me. Overall I don't recommend, they scam like no other. read more

Good if you want to buy something, but bad if you want to sell something. I took some clothes in there last year thinking i could pick up AT LEAST $50-$70 for the dresses, shirts, and jeans I brought in (BCBG, 7 for All Mankind). They didn't even want half the stuff and they offered me I think $12 dollars for a new $40 dress that had never been worn and an AE dress that I bought for $45-$50 and was in excellent condition. They didn't even want the nearly new BCBG top or 7FAM jeans! Looking through the store though, they have a "style". Many of the clothes are sort of punk-rock and very teeny-bopperish. Something a 14 or 15 year old would love, not so much a 20-something :-). Think Pac-Sun, Aeropostale kinds of clothes. There were a few cool things, but most of the clothes there just weren't my style. Needless to say I was disappointed...but the prices were pretty good if you wanted to buy something. Take your teenager there if you have one...they'll most likely love it, and it's easy on the wallet :-). read more

This place is not for everyone. Prices are high compared to many other thrift stores. They have brands that teens would like but little for any other age groups. You can get money if you donate here but they are VERY PICKY about what they will take and don't give you as much money as you think you'll get for your new or gently used items. Call ahead of time if you plan on trying to sell them your clothes. They will tell you what they're looking for and if the brands of clothing you have are acceptable to bring in or not. I can say that this is a popular store for teens, catering to trends that are still in style. You can find Brand Name clothing at other thrift stores for Much Cheaper though, so go to the other stores first and if you still can't find what you want, try this store for the brand/style you desire. read more

Went to sell some clothes I've bought within the last year and they said it wasn't what they were looking for and they were too outdated. Outdated?!? I brought some clothes in to sell today and couldn't get out of there fast enough. The women at the counter gave me nothing but attitude, dismissed several nice pieces of clothing without ever looking at them, and then spent the next five minutes insulting me piece by piece before telling me they weren't interested. If your business offers a service, you should at least treat customers like a valued part of that business. read more

What a scam! Incredibly disappointing. I was there when they opened today and was told to leave my stuff for about an hour, I would be texted when it was done. I returned an hour later and was told it would take 3 days, so I went all the way home (not a short trip). Once home I got the text saying my stuff had been reviewed. So, back I went ... only to find out that they didn't take one item. I know my stuff was as good, if not better than what I saw in the store, which was outdated and smelly. My suspicion? They didn't look at a thing. The customer service was awful ... no personality at all and many excuses about how busy she was and how much she has to do at the store. Overall, a terrible experience. Great concept, but they need someone in the store that has some enthusiasm and knows how to deal with people. read more

I would not recommend that any one try to buy or sell any clothes to this location! I brought in about 15 pieces of clothing, all designer brands (ranging from Bebe & free people to juicy couture & Abercrombie & Fitch) and was offered 97 cents for a 6 year old pair of juicy couture leggings. I understand the store has a specific style that they are looking for but all of my current up to date styles and brands were passed on due to being "out of style". This place doesnt have many clothing options for older age groups. I am not that old but, im old enough to not want to wear the same clothing that highschoolers wear. Also everything is so unorganized and it smells weird in the store. I wouldnt go there again to get clothing for myself. My 17 year old sister had a better experience but she still wasnt satisfied. read more

I have bought and sold at Plato's in the Buffalo area numerous times over the years and now that I'm closer to Rochester I gave this location a shot when I was doing some major closet cleaning. I brought two huge baskets of clothes to sell along with tons of accessories. I had new with tags items, everything was in great condition and all name brand items (I know not to bother with anything else there since I've sold there before). My initial impression was not great as they greeted me as if I was putting them out, then when I came back in the "about an hour" time frame they gave me, I was literally yelled at for coming back too soon. After they were finally ready for me, they took only about ten percent of what I brought in. They said everything else was too worn (NEW ITEMS WITH TAGS) or not the brands they wanted (American eagle, Abercrombie, Hollister and Guess items were turned down). Overall I was very disappointed and felt like the staff was extremely rude. I realize I was just selling on this trip but if they wanted me to actually come back, maybe they should have treated me better! I've been going to Plato's Closet a lot, and honestly, my trips there have been getting worse. The first time I went, they cashiers and employees were nice and helpful. But from there, my trips went downhill. Yesterday, I called to see what they were interested in buying, and they said "summer stuff and sweaters" so I brought some summer shirts and sweaters. They took NONE, not over exaggerating, NONE of it, and I brought lots of clothes. My friend went with me and they were going to buy one thing of hers, a Vera Bradley backpack, for 10$, and were going to sell it for 25$, and she bought it for 60$. What sense does that make? When she asked if they could increase the price they bought it for, the very rude cashier person said "Look, you can either take it back or we will buy it for 10$." The employees were all rude about everything, from how many people were allowed in a dressing room, to how much they would buy an expensive bag for. I will probably just stick with Once Upon a Child and Goodwill next time... read more
