great store to sell your clothes, nice customer service, and such cute clothing !!!!!

Stay Away. Seriously. The staff is rude, and they are awful crooked. I went in to sell some old stuff of mine, and they took like eight percent of the stuff I bought- telling me they "had enough plus-size clothing". It doesnt matter whether I'm "plus size" or not- the girls were straight-up rude about it. They decided to take some of my stuff, including a ring I had brought in. But, deciding I didn't want to do business with them, I asked for my stuff back. They wouldn't give my stuff back to me. WOULDN'T. Even though I asked repeatedly to have it returned to me after they told me they'd give me like three dollars for it. WOULDN'T GIVE IT BACK!! I hadn't signed any agreement or anything. It was legally still mine. I could have pressed charges. They said I could take the three dollars in cash, or six dollars store credit, and those were my only options. How about give me back my stuff?!?! Yes, honey, they straight up stole my stuff. I gave up, took my three dollars, and left. I went in a few days later. I found my ring I had "sold" them- they were charging THIRTY FIVE DOLLARS for it. Crooks. Thieves. Really catty awful terrible unethical staff. STAY AWAY. read more

I have been here a couple times and wanted to see how it went each time before reviewing since some of the reviews here are split. I've shopped around and also attempted to sell my clothes too. Not sure what the age range is here but the gals look maybe in high school. This might effect the styles they are seeking to purchase so this might be why they don't buy a lot of sellers clothing. That's all good- every store will have its own unique niche. It's not terrible, but I haven't found anything the couple times I've been here. I was not offended they passed on my bags of clothes, but I've sold more to Buffalo exchange etc in the past. These things are a hit or miss, that's how it is. I actually like the San Mateo Plato's location because of the huge selection and I've purchased some really cute pieces there. I've picked up some really amazing finds here including the most amazing leather handbag. The only thing I have negative to say is the air freshener they use is SUPER smelly and overkill. I always leave with a little bit of a headache after shopping here :( I bought my bag a week ago and it still stinks like the air freshener. And since it's leather it's going to take a while for the smell to eventually air out. read more

I stopped coming here for a few months due to the shitty owner who used to run that place. I recently visited and I absolutely love the girls who work here they are the absolute sweetest!! TINNA! PAIGE AND KIRA ARE THE BOMB.COM!!!!! I wish I knew the new owners name because she's always a delight when I come in and always so helpful! Shopping wise u can find deals from left to right ... customer service is blah it's like they are scared to have a conversation with the customers definitely love to shop for deals but the atmosphere is awkward because of ALL the sales associates . I have been to this location twice. My first visit was just to check it out and maybe purchase a few items. I don't remembered if I bought anything as this was a while back. It was under different ownership at that time. I made a second visit to PC yesterday to part with some no longer needed items. It was a good, easy experience. I browsed the store as my items were being reviewed and was impressed with the selection. I will definitely come back soon and do some shopping. I prefer to have an open window of time when it comes to second hand shopping. As for selling clothes, the pricing was fair. You have to remember that this business also needs to make money. They can not give you 100% value of an item. If your intention is to make your money back on clothing you once purchased, this is not the kind of place you should use as an outlet. Plus, you can tell by the tags in the store, they are not over charging for their items. I started the first day of spring with a clean closet! And made some extra cash. Large space with lots of light - racks and racks of clothes. Can get some good bargains on name-brand stuff

Incredibly rude service, especially when selling. The selection of clothing was mainly for 16 year old girls, not women selling higher end items. Yet the staff seemed to think they were buying for a boutique, not a location in a small town square. I realize not all my used clothing is not up to their in-fashion status, but there is a professional and kind way to say so, other than brushing the person off and leaving them feeling bad. I was really looking forward to having a store like this near me, but I will never recommend anyone waste their time here. read more

The lady politely declined to purchase my things - which I was okay with, being that a lot of the items were from pre-2011. I had brought my clothes in a white trash bag and was expecting her to grab a bag in front of me because I recognized a few of my nicer items in it. Instead she grabbed another bag with my other items and said goodbye. I immediately asked why my things were in the bag that she was planning to keep, she got awkward and gave me the additional bag to go through. I found 7 of my items that they weren't planning to pay for. Either one of two things happened here: 1. They were blatantly trying to steal my clothes. Or 2. They were THAT disorganized - even though it wasn't busy in the store. Either way - not okay in my book. Be careful to watch as they go through your items. read more

I love Platos Closet! The owner and the staff are always extremely welcoming and nice (but definitely not overbearing as some store's staff can be!) I go to Platos regularly, sometimes just to browse, but I almost always find a few things that I truly love. The prices are extremely fair and sometimes you can "find gold"...even with clearance items! As a frequent seller (I try to clean out my closet every few months or so), I find that I receive a fair buy price, and you also have the option to keep items if you feel like you wanted more for them and list them on Poshmark/Depop etc. instead. In addition, unlike many, many thrift stores, I love that Platos allows returns (within 7 days) for store credit. This is especially important now during Covid as you can't try on items in-store. It's nice to receive that store credit for an ill fitting pair of jeans you bought to find something new! I love Platos and plan to continue to shop here regularly! read more

What a waste of time! First of all, walking in, there's some hipster girl on her phone who rolls her eyes and scowls when it looks like she might actually have to do some work. And when all is said and done, they're not going to buy any of my clothes. "Last year's" "Out of season" Whatever. Some of these were Christmas gifts (it's January). How can they be "last year" or "out of season"? So I won't get any money, but the girl says that I can donate them. Maybe I will, but not to Plato's Closet! The worker was so rude and the system is messed up! The only reason why this review is 2 stars and not 1 is because, while the girl was evaluating my clothes, I used the time to look around the shop. Wow, I've never felt so unwelcome in a business before even setting foot inside. As I'm walking up to the store with goods I was hoping to sell, the women at the cash wrap are staring at me. I look to the side and think it's something else, but as I open the door and make my way in, they're still staring. I walk a few more feet and they ask if I'm looking to sell (yes), and they said they stopped buying at 7pm. It's 7:15pm. Welllll, I'm so glad I trekked over there for nothing. Will never go back!!! This was my second time at this location, I was very excited to find one close by since I now live in the city. I bought a dress and once I was done paying for this the girl fold it in half and set it on the counter. When I picked it up the dress, I notice there was a pen underneath the dress I had purchased, and of course the dress ended up with the pen mark. I told the girl and she told me she had a Tide Stain Remover Pen, so she tried to remove it. After she used the pen the dress looked snagged and the marks didn't come off. She told me it should come off once I wash it!!! WoW ok, but it still looked snagged, I asked her if I could get a refund or exchanged since it wasn't my fault and she said no. I didn't put the pen there and I didn't put the dress on top of the pen so how is it that she's not even going to at least give me an exchange. Her answer was that she didn't know how. I asked her if I could speak to a manager and apparently she is the manager. So how is it that a manager is not going to know how to do a return or exchange, on top of that it was her fault, not that she did it intentionally but the least thing she could have done was given me an exchange. Very poor customer service and specially from a manager. Unfortunately I didn't get her name, but I went in today, Thursday in the afternoon. She had long black hair, looked very young. I don't see why this place has a low rating. I went in yesterday to sell some of my used and unused clothes. I was warmfully welcomed by the employees. Since I never sold at Plato's before they broke down how the process works step by step. As they were about to look through my 2 small duffle bags of clothes I looked around. They have a wide variety of stuff for men and women. They actually had a wide variety of clothes at really cheap and affordable prices compared to other thrift shops such as buffalo exchange. I was surprised to see many options of good clothing brands at such affordable prices. They called my name when they were done looking through my things, and I was surprised that they offered me $103 store credit or $68 in cash! I wasn't looking to make a fortune off my things but $68 is not bad at all. I took the cash and also bought a cute Harajuku lovers make up bag that I could use for my pens and pencils for only $4. So cheap! My first experience here was very good, the employees were SUPER friendly and welcoming. The shop has a huge variety of clothing at affordable prices! Also, I saw they had HUF socks for sale by the register. I didn't know they bought/ sold HUF socks or I would have brought my 30+ brand new pairs in to sell to them. I'll have to make another trip down here. One of the employees( Jackie?) called me a few hours after I left to inform me on the hours her boss would be in to work so I can sell my socks because the boss is the one who would have to buy them. I wasn't expecting a call from them, I was just going to come in when I was free to sell the socks. But that was a very nice gesture of Jackie to call me and let me know, which saved me another trip! I was so excited to see this store go in at Eureka Square. My 4 teenage daughters and I love going to vintage / 2nd hand stores. Only problem is they only go to size XL. Today when I asked about larger sizes the girl said we go to XL, then asked me what I was looking for. When I said sweaters and blouses, she kind of looked around from the cash wrap, the just wondered off. I asked the owner if they would ever carry larger sizes, her reply to me was "We go up to size XL. Ok ladies, message received. Now my girls are all under XL. The one that was with me didn't like the store, cool things but she told me she felt the staff was cold and didn't talk to the customers. She couldn't find prices on most of the items she looked at and felt those with tags were priced to high. So, if you happen to be larger than XL, which is a big portion of the population, don't bother. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I definitely would. Rude customer service. The girl (Shaylin) looking through our clothes couldn't even smile or say hello. She had no idea what she was doing and didn't even know how to use the cash register, all throughout not being able to use the register she refused to look at me or my brother or explain to us what was happening she just yelled across the store to her co-worker who also had no idea what to do. I have no problem that they barely took any of our clothes but rude customer service and lack of explanation (about both the clothes and whatever the problem was with the register) is how you piss off any customer. read more

Okay, Yelpers, I actually have a little bit of history with this store, so please bear with me while I try my best to be as open & honest as possible for you... So, my very first take on this store (years ago, back when it first opened) was that I absolutely hated it. I was pretty overweight back then & was also fairly convinced that this store only bought/sold used Forever 21 cardigans in size smol, which was definitely NOT something I was personally into for multiple reasons!!! That was totally the old owner's deal, tho. Let's go ahead & fast forward to present day, shall we? OMG, OMG, I LOVE PLATO'S CLOSET SO MUCH I NEEDED TO WRITE IT IN ALL CAPS! Idk what all these ridiculously grumpy Karens are yapping about because this store is absolutely RAD! They must not know fashion or something? Idk, I mean, where else can you buy a Rolling Stones shirt for $5 tho, hmmm? Dude, the scores you can find in this store are actually unreal, tbh. Single stitch tees for $20 something dollars, brand new looking dunks for $35 (translation: dunks = a pair of Nike Air Jordans), there's literally an entire rack devoted to only The North Face & I swear almost all the of the fleeces are under $25, but nbd, right?! Get this... I picked up a pair of Vans/Pendleton Sk8 Hi for 70% off $25 last month! I mean, $8 for a shoe that you can barely find anywhere online for under $100... can you even tho?! Oh & I guess I should probably also mention that I've been a successful clothing reseller since the mid 90's, huh? That's right, I'm quite literally a professional clothing reseller & I'm gonna tell you why Plato's is hands down my most favorite of all... to both buy at & definitely also sell to, too... it has everything to do with the accessibility of this store & the realness of it's current owner. You see, a couple years ago a lovely lady actually bought the horrific establishment where the tiny Forever 21 cardigans went to die & has since completely flipped it into a store that's absolutely perfect for my hometown of Pacifica! She brings in tons of beachy/skater attire. Her women's workout clothes section has all the name brands we love (from lulu to reebok & everything in between) & it's basically to die for, you guys. And I can understand how the average person may feel defeated when their $100 Patagonia fleece only gets them 30% of $30, but for someone like me (who literally buys clothes by the pound specifically only to resell) it's like a dream come true! You see, Buffalo Exchange only takes in funky/urban fashion, Crossroads only buys name brand office gear in absolutely flawless condition, Wasteland really only wants your high end designer couture... & Plato's is where you can actually sell Pink by Victoria Secret, Brandy Melville, and even a piece by Forever 21 or H&M if it's still extra cute & super fashionable! I mean, you can only imagine how upsetting it was for me to read all these negative reviews written about my favorite store because they're simply not true! The kids who work at this Plato's are actually awesome & THIS STORE IS EXCEPTIONALLY RAD!!! if you don't agree then you're most likely just a Karen & if I click on your page I'll get to read several more mean reviews you took the time to write, bet! This is absolutely the worst shopping experience I've had in a really long time. I went to exchange some clothes and the two high school girls that were running the store were extremely rude and snippy. They offered absolutely no help and refused my clothing as if it were trash. Mind you I brought in a $400 angora coat. They were eating candy on the floor while touching all of my clothing. When I got the bag that I had brought all the clothing in back it had a giant hole in it when I ask for a new bag they acted like it was the biggest inconvenience. My opinion is the store should be shut down. Even in a time where customer service is at an all-time low these people took the cake. read more

Definitely a larger location that most Platos however their inventory isn't that nice. With that said, I was a bit disappointed when I came here. There were so many clothes but the majority of it were clothes from the 2000-2005 era when I was in middle school, not exactly something that's trending. As for the clothes that I did deem as cute, I noticed they were flawed. A bunch of things were stained, stretched out, and some even had holes. Not really worth it to shop here in my opinion until they start restoring their inventory with better clothes. Even though the price here is relatively closer to Goodwill prices, the clutter and poor quality of the clothes they've bought here over the months doesn't make it worth my time. Customer service here was also not all that good. Everyone's on their phone most of the time and their unenthusiastic. Obviously no one WANTS to work, but at least pretend you enjoy it. I really don't know why this place has a bad rating. I've sold my clothes at other thrift stores and I know that usually whatever season it is at the time, that is the type of clothes they will be looking for. So the month right now is April, and I figured they're looking for spring/summer clothes. So I gathered up a ton of tank tops, skirts, and shorts to sell. And some old handbags. They didn't take all of the clothes I had to offer but they did take a good amount. Overall, I had about $33 in store credit. They have a lot of clothes to offer at really good prices. I bought this wind-breaker Nike sweatshirt for $15, which is relatively really really cheap since regular retail price for a Nike jacket could amount to almost $100! I also bought some skirts and shirts. The thing I liked most about this place was that most of the clothes they had to offer were under $10. The workers seemed friendly and nice to me. However, the workers did seem kind of young so I can understand if they still haven't learned perfect customer service. That's totally understandable. But the workers were definitely not as bad as the reviewers made them out to be!! But one thing that bothered me though a little was one of the cashiers was eating behind the counter. It's a little distracting and not very professional. But they're young, it's likely they haven't understood total professionalism yet anyways. No one was being rude to me or acting stuck up (like many reviewers had claimed them to be) so overall the store was okay with me! I'll definitely becoming back. read more

The management needs take a serious look at their staff and how they select clothes.The two teenage looking girls flat out rejected with barely looking at my 3 boxes of contemporary clothes, which included a black swede leather jacket, Chico tops and never worn men's shirts. I've sold a lot of my clothes here and I have no clue why I keep coming back. But this is for sure my last time. If you plan on selling stuff, no matter what the brand is, the amount, etc.. prepare to feel RIPPED OFF. I've sold a loooot of my stuff I barely even wore, designer stuff, things that are in 9 out of 10 condition. I feel like I could of made more money from selling it by having my own garage sale or something! -__- Also, im not just mad because I feel ripped off but also the people that work there are kind of stuck up. Plato's Closet is phenomenal, they have quality clothes at really cheap prices. My closet was pretty much %70 yoga pants and sweatshirts. Then I found this gem. The best part is, their employees helped me look through the racks to piece outfits together, the ladies were super helpful and really knowledgeable on inventory. I just went in again and bought the cutest Steve Madden rain boots, love them! I first discovered this spot a few weeks ago, Mina and Jackie were the bomb.com. Mina helped me find 2 outfits and pieced together some awesome accessories to go with it. This place is pretty much the only place I shop now. read more

This place was okay, the San Mateo location has better customer service. Last time I was there, I was rung up for my purchases and the cashier (I think she was still in hs) was very rude and ignored me when she was ringing me up. Then she threw me my receipt, not even mentioning that I still had a few bucks left in store credit. The only reason why I'm giving this place two stars is because they have some great stuff if you look through everything. I ended up with an H & M work dress and a BCBG blazer, all for under $18 read more

Customer service was terrible. Just a group of ignorant and rude kids. I asked to go to the dressing room and they said yes so I walked in with my basket, 2 minutes later a guy bangs on my door and tells me I can't bring more than 10 items of clothing with me. I got changed and apologized since I didn't know and no staff member told me when I asked, and they accused me of shoplifting and asked to search my bag. The whole staff also judged me and made me feel bad about buying so much clothes, like I was a nuisance when I was giving them business. I love this place and was a little sad to see negative reviews. I have to say that I have always received excellent service. I shop for my nieces here and, since they probably don't like my style, often ask for help from the staff. They are young and they know what's in style so it works for me. I recently went there and was helped by the young man with the colored hair. And he was really helpful to me. I showed him a pic of my niece so he could get a sense of her style and he showed me some great stuff. Everything he chose, she loved. He spent a long time helping me and never seemed annoyed or put off. I actually felt like he was having fun. I realize not every day will be perfect but, for me, the staff at Platos and the selection are all amazing. I would recommend them to anyone looking for something special for someone they care about. It's better than mall shopping, where everything looks the same. The clothes and the people are truly unique. I hope you will give them a chance. read more

I've been to all of the Plato's Closets in the Bay Area. This location and the San Mateo's location have a lot of outdated items compared to others, but I can always find an item I enjoy every time I drop by (to clarify, they're items that are not in fashion whether they're vintage or newer pieces). Selling here is a breeze, but they're being particularly picky with the influx of clothes they receive during covid. read more

Horrible service!!! I went to sell clothes and costumes. It took everything inside of me not to flip out on them. They are so bad I went in all bummed looking cause I'm sick and they judge me off my looks they took couple tops off the top of my bag and then tell me they only want to buy two costumes for $3 like what!! You didn't even look at the whole bag I brought. To make it worse they gave me bag all ripped up like I didn't give it to them like that. Waste of gas, time and energy! Go to SAN MATEO one if you're buying and selling clothes it's insane how different they are. I've been going to San Mateo location now for years totally will drive the distance next time. ***sold clothes*** It was my first time coming by here and I would come back again! I brought a whole box of stuff and they finished going through it very quickly, and also had a text message system set up which informed me once I was done so I stopped by the near by cafe to grab some boba while waiting. I took a look around the store as well and it had a bunch of clothes I'm sure a lot of people would love! One star off since the lady that handled the procedure wasn't the friendliest/most informative but she was quick so I can't really complain, and I found it odd I had to input my drivers license ID number in order to begin the process. They didn't accept all the clothes though but I expected that. I'm not sure why people bring designer brands here then complain they're getting it at a much cheaper priceyou're at a thrift store. Just keep this in mind when selling and you'll have a better experience. If you have a $400 bag then probably resell it on fb marketplace or something and not at a store that averages less than 10 bucks each article of clothing. Some of the reviews here appalled me. I recommend only really coming with decent condition clothes you wouldn't mind throwing away since they're not going to give you a lot for each piece. Anyway thanks ! read more
