I come to Eureka Square for massages and took notice of Plato's Closet on my last visit. I'm pushing 30, but I look much younger, am very petite, and have lots of clothes from places like the juniors section of Macy's and PacSun. In an effort to declutter and make room for a more age-appropriate wardrobe, I recently came here with a small batch of clothing, purses, and a pair of boots to sell. The employee who greeted me was extremely friendly and walked me, as a first-timer, through the process in a very kind way. I browsed the store as my items were reviewed. The store is neatly organized by gender, size, clothing type, and color. I gathered a handful of cool pieces and went back to the counter to check on the items I sought to sell. They unfortunately weren't interested in buying any of my items. This didn't surprise me too much because their store seemed very well-stocked--overstocked actually! Plus, most of my items, though lightly worn, were from 2-4 years ago, which I guess is a lifetime in the world of fast fashion. In the end, I bought a pair of Superga sneakers because they perfectly accommodate a developing bunion on one of my feet. Overall a solid experience--even if I'm off to donate to Goodwill soon! read more

Today I finally stopped in Plato's Closet and was impressed. Pacifica has no where to go for ANY clothing much less affordable and stylish. It was nice to find some retail therapy in my own back yard. It's a shame that when people Yelp it is always sooo negative. If anyone knows anything about 2nd hand retail such as Cross Roads or Plato's, it's not the employees that set the criteria, it is management.....don't take it so personal. No matter where you go, you'll never get much for any clothing. Although nice, Hollister, Lucky, and Urban Outfitter (though great stores) are far from high end. How much do you really expect to get in return? Can you just be thankful that Pacifica finally has a place like this... I personally had a great experience. I walked out with 5 unique items for under $25. The customer service was great. The girl that helped me was Dallas...(I think, hopefully I pronounced that correctly) I would love for Plato's to stick around, so ignore those lame reviews and check it out for yourself. Personally when I go to a 2nd hand clothing store, I go to save money and hunt for unique buys. The customer service part is here nor there...just leave me alone, let me shop, and ring me up. this is probably the best Plato's closet around to buy AND sell. The staff and owner are sooo kind and so sweet! They had some really cool stuff too. Really great women's clothing, they even had a supreme backpack! If you're around the area, definitely stop by. They will give you a good amount of money for your items but have the worst attitude ever especially while buying clothes. I came in 5 minutes before 7 (they stop buying at 7) and I just got dirty looks and a lecture about how they won't purchase items close to 7. I got 60$ for like 4 north faces which is pretty good compared to other stores but when you're given a stink face at because you have to work then it gets pretty uncomfortable. I wish the girls weren't so stuck up when having to go through clothes. Anyways cool store they don't take kids stuff but have horrible service when it's time to close. read more

I usually love shopping at this store, but about a week and a half ago when I came in the three employees were standing in the cash wrap trash talking one customer to another customer. I thought that was a little odd. Then when I went to try on clothes the employee let some strange woman stand around in the fitting room waiting for the specific room I was in because she thought the others were too small. The lady kept shuffling past my door, and it made me very uncomfortable. I'm not sure why the employee left her there to awkwardly hover around my fitting room when there were three other fitting rooms available, but he should have stayed and kept an eye on her. The experience really creeped me out. Then when I went to buy the three sweaters and a pair of leggings I said I wasn't sure about one sweater, then decided to purchase it anyway. After the transaction the cashier took the leggings and gave me my receipt. I realized that for some reason she hadn't rung up the leggings, which is odd, because they were never the item in question, but I guess it's too much to pay attention to your customer here now. I didn't have any problem doing a second transaction to buy them, and I was more than happy to run my card again, because it only takes about 20 seconds, but then she told me it was a $10 minimum for a credit transaction, and handed the card back. The purchase was a business expense and I wanted it on my business card. She asked rudely "Do you have debit?", and I said no, because I wanted it on my business card. At first she just stood there and acted like she wasn't going to do it, and I stared at her in disbelief, then another employee said "is that her 'are you kidding me?' face?", and the cashier then proceeded to do the transaction. She tossed a pen at me for me to sign, and then sarcastically said "um, have a nice evening!" when she put the receipt on the counter rather than handing it to me. Don't say anything if you're going to be openly sarcastic about it and passive aggressive. I didn't respond because I had nothing civil to say to that employee after being needlessly disrespected over her mistake. It could have just been two transactions, but the employee was rude about it because she felt embarrassed and has never been taught how to be humble about little mistakes, or how to function in a customer service environment. I don't remember seeing her name, but she was tall and blonde with winged eyeliner. I was a store manager for a major clothing retailer for several years, and would have immediately disciplined any employee had I ever witnessed them treating a customer the way this girl treated me today. I get that it's stressful (though I worked with easily 100x more volume and traffic than this place in a day), but there's never any excuse to be rude to a customer, especially to one who has done absolutely nothing wrong, and been perfectly polite to you the whole time. They should train their employees. read more

I just visited this location to sell some items I no longer needed, I had my 12 year old daughter with me to check the store out. While I was browsing through the racks, I was APPALLED by the music that was playing in the store, I found my self wanting to grab my daughter and run for the door to avoid hearing "freak my sh**, fu** my di** ..." And a bunch of other VULGAR lyrics that I most definitely did not want my daughter to hear. Don't waste your time driving out here from wherever you may live in the area. The staff is made up of rude, high school girls who were not taught the basics of customer service or how to treat a human being. I brought in 2 large bags of mostly gap, J crew and pieces from Nordstrom. The girl took 2 random forever21 pieces before tossing my bags on the floor and helping the next person who walked in. I asked if she was already done with mine, not thinking there was any possible way. She said yes and showed me the sad pieces she took in. I questioned if she'd looked through everything KNOWING she hadn't. Never again. This place is the absolute worse and the people who manage it clearly give zero f*!ks. read more

The manager is great and only a few of the employees. Some of the employee's didn't seem very helpful and nice. One time I was there, I saw an employee eating behind the register, which was very unprofessional. I sold some clothes, bags, jewelry and shoes. You won't get much but I guess it's better than nothing. I sold about 25 items overall, and made a little less than $100. I suggest selling on E bay or Posh-mark if you really want to get the best bargain for your items. I also bought two blazers and they were both cute and cost $20 for both. The customer service is the main reason this location is bad. I've visited a few times since it has opened and I'm alwaya met with the same unpleasant "I don't want to be here" mentalities. If I could give this zero stars I would. I drove down from San Francisco with a huge bin of clothes and another with shoes. All in amazing condition that have been purchased in the last year or two and worn less than 1 or 2 times (I know Plato's buying terms). Brands like JCrew, Madewell, BCBG - most from Nordstrom/N Rack. And about 12 pairs of new Steve Madden heels and wedges, along with 4 pairs of converse that are all almost brand new. Also 2 pairs of Nike tennis shoes. They bought two shirts from me for $3 (one from old navy and one from forever 21), out of probably 200 items. Wasn't even worth the gas down here. I took my time and looked around the store and the clothes they had are old, cheap and trashy. And the cherry on top of it all, the girls that went through my stuff TORE through it and didn't even have the decency to fold it back up in the bins. Bust! These employees are super unprofessional and just plain rude. My experience is not much different than others here. I brought in a bag of clothing, they accepted one item. Two dresses I brought were Calvin Klein only a year old, worn once, classic style. I had no idea they only wanted super trendy clothes, which is ok, but why make me feel bad? Many people like classic styles, and my thought was someone without much money could wear this stuff. Nope, they suggested donating, which I did (and felt better about it anyway). I visit this store regualrly, and although the selection there is fairly impressive for a thrift store, the employees seem to be wrapped up in "Who went to last nights party" or "Who's Brad with"? They were of little to no help in finding anything, and to be honest, they are pretty intimidating. Not only of they look like they don't want to be there, they look like they would prefer it if you were not there. However, on the bright side, their menacing glares have not discouraged me yet, because the prices and selection are just too good to pass up! This clothing store is absolutely awesome! Cute shoes $8 to $14!!! Great jeans (never paid more than $14)! Summer dresses $8..These prices beg you to buy the clothes!! I keep losing weight and this is how I trade out my old stuff for new. They even pay you for some of your old clothes if they are lightly worn, in good shape and not too old! I've told so many women about this, but they also sell men's and children's clothes. The outfit I'm wearing for my profile picture is from Plato's! So I had an assortment of items I am not using, so I decided to check out the Pacifica location. I have been to the San Mateo one and have found some fun items, so why not? Location is pretty convenient not too far from the freeway. Plenty of free parking, love that. Brought my bags in and the sales person greeted, explained the process, and all went well. She had great customer service. This location is larger than the SM one, Shopped around and found a couple of things, prices were ok, condition of items were ok, they did have a small men's selection- again selection was ok. Can you guess my overall impression... I then went to see my name on the board that my items were looked thru. I get that they selected only a few of my many things, no problem, it was the amount that they give u. NWT items like Coach bag, large handbag, sweater, bb hats for $2.50-3. Wow! A couple hats were like new, but still! I have been to buffalo exchange or a few other places, but this was way lower. Needless to say I kept the items. Overall the location is fine, parking great, customer service was fine, prices to purchase,selection- ok. Selling option for new items- not good. For used, cheap labels it would work. In fairness I have only been there once, and inventory is always changing, maybe I came at the wrong time or this location isn't a fit for me. read more

Everything is color coded but it would have been nice to have a bit more organization. The staff aren't very helpful and I have to say that customer service definitely just doesn't cut it. The one thing that really impressed me was that I called them to find out about another stores name and one of the sales people took the time to go outside to get the name of the place for me. It was cool in the beginning when they were in the buying stage, but these days, they will rarely take anything. When i first came, they took most of my things and said (politely) to bring some dresses back if i could remove a stain. i brought it back along with more clothes- this time the people were different, and i was surprised they only took 2 items, not including the dresses..which i got cleaned, and they'd only been used once for an event. anyway! the next time I went, i brought a bunch of my sister's clothes..when i saw it was the same girl who didn't take my items before (i had hoped it wouldnt), she didnt want to buy anything at all..which was fine. but yeah, i'm guessing its just they have too many things already? it just sucks that it probably depends on the people who look through your clothes. they do have lots to look at though, but i feel like the san mateo location has better selection/prices even though its a lot smaller. i have definitely bought and sold more in the san mateo location, too. read more

I stopped into Plato's Closet the other day and the new owner was there, her name is Marcie. I am so happy to see a new owner. She is super excited to be taking over and has a lot of ideas to refresh the store and improve the experience there. When I came in she was working on displays and going through inventory. She greeting me and was really friendly. She told me to spread the word to bring in cloths since she is building inventory and she does not plan on being as restrictive on what she will buy. I had just a few minutes so I took a quick look around and found two cute pair of pants for my daughter that were very reasonably priced. I had bought some shoes from Platos once before, and the shoes definitely had been worn multiple times because they were dirty. Today (5/25/16) I brought in 3 trash bags full of summer/spring clothes and they only took 4 items! I had plenty of shirts/shorts in good shape, 3 pairs of shoes, and a wallet clutch I got for Christmas (never used). I personally think that the girl who assisted me was too picky because all of my stuff was only worn once, or not worn at all. I had a pair of shoes that I only wore for a graduation party last year and they wouldn't take them because they "found a hole" and I checked them beforehand and it was NOT there before.... And I had a Nike shirt and they didn't take it because "the lettering was starting to stretch" and the shirt was too small so I never even wore it. I was really really disappointed. Although I did hear from friends that they had also been disappointed because Platos didn't take many of their items. So maybe the store should think about having more big sales at the end of each season. This will maximize space in the store which will be designated for the clothes that Platos will buy from customers. read more

The young women who run this place need a class on manners. The place has that musty smell like goodwill. Clothes are mostly would be high end. We brought a bag of some vintage, some newer, and some still had tags and never worn. They did not want any of them. Their reason was they had an over stock of what we brought in. Really? Went through your racks. All looked like used worn over priced junk. I have been to the goodwill in Lindamar and even though it has that old basement smell the clothes look cleaner and less used. Some of the tees they had appeared to be so wore if you washed it once it would fall apart. Again staff rude, aloof, and snobby. Come on it's used clothing not Sax. The workers that I have met so far are all friendly and welcoming. Went in here for the first time last week to trade some clothes. I had spent time cleaning out my closet and had gathered a good amount of some cute and trendy stuff including purses, clothes, shoes/boots, and accessories so I felt confident that I'd be able to sell and get a decent amount. Well needless to say with ALL of my things combined they only bought 2 pairs of shoes and a pair of earrings from me for a total of $12! Mind you these things were in great condition. What a waste. Now granted, $12 is better than nothing but I expected more based on the trendy styles I brought in and the condition of my items. They are picky I guess. Their only response really was that they either already had too many of the similar items or that they were out of season. I did over hear them tell someone else that they were pretty much only accepting workout clothes right now. SMH. While they're going through your things of course they tell you to go shop around because it will take some time. The purpose of shopping around is to get you to spend money which kinda defeats the purpose of selling to them; you're there to sell and make money so don't fall for that. I did take a look around though to see what kind of items they sell and for the most part they had cute stuff. It was a mix of designer and non-designer names and the prices were all pretty cheap. I ended up buying a blouse for $4 by Forever 21. I would probably shop in there again but not sure if I'd attempt to sell again. That part wasn't so worth it. I left with all my original items except 3 so wasn't too happy about that. And the smell of the store is a bit off; it smells like a thrift store- if you know that smell. They should leave the doors open to get fresh air in the store. read more
