I had asked for a butterfly haircut with…read moreface-framing curtain bangs and tapered layers to get some lightness and volume but the outcome ended up being a mediocre haircut. I even showed some photos just to give her the idea of what I really wanted. Unfortunately, the back hair was so heavy and not layered literally a blunt straight cut. Some strands were uneven on the temple area. And I do not have any curtain bangs as desired. My hair is thick and needs texturing and thinning shears to give it that nice flow. I was expecting something softer and more textured. I just wanted to share this feedback to tutor stylist on some popular haircuts. The salon is really gorgeous and modern and the staff is very polite I just wish I had came out with a desired haircut from this salon.

I really appreciated my hair stylist, how they give you a robe to wear over your clothes, offer refreshments, etc. I intentionally chose this salon because I have color treated hair and wanted a refined blowout. The experience itself was honestly 10/10. Where my frustrations come in is the longevity of the results. My hair looked so beautiful immediately after my appointment. What I did notice during the appointment was the stylist was using L'Oréal hairspray. And honestly I didn't think anything of it because they're the experts but as I was walking back to my hotel after the appointment and glanced at my reflection in the mirror, I was shocked to see the curls had almost completely fallen out! And also my hair was frizzing up quite a bit. This is my frustration: environment: trump tower + luxurious experience + great view + Anthony Cristiano name + $110 blowout cost (before tip) does not equal L'Oréal hairspray! This equation does not add up. They use R + Co Shampoo and Conditioner which is what I would expect for a salon of this caliber but I must admit I am quite disappointed with the longevity of my results. I really thought I was going to have this beautiful , unfrizzable, elegant soft curl look that lasted the whole night but by the time I returned to my hotel my curls were gone and by the end of the night I had frizzy straight hair. Again, I think my frustration is because of the caliber of this salon and the fact that they used drug store hairspray and I had to ask for my flyaways to be tamed prior to leaving. All that to say while the experience was lovely, my closing feeling is disappointment as my results were quite lackluster. Perhaps for hair services aside from a blowout they do an exceptional job but this was not it. If you have a lot of fine hair that frizzes easily , this may not be where you want to get your blowout. I prefer a buttery ash and that can be tough line to walk in the world of blonde. Fortunately I've never left displeased with a cut, color or blow out. I need a refresh on my roots about every 4-6 weeks and when you go that often you have to be careful your blonde hair doesn't start doing strange things, and stays healthy. SalonBlonde has the best colorists I've used in Chicago and I've been coloring my hair for a looooong time. I've seen almost everyone at the salon for something or if my regular stylist isn't available and I need to get in pronto and I'm always happy. Ashley is my go-to gal for my color (and cuts) because she gets the exact shade I am looking for right, and adds the right highlights and toner to get it perfect. I would follow her anywhere she worked because she is that good. I've had great colorists but I've never had anyone do such as exact perfect job with my skin tone. She is a hair color genius. She doesn't just excel at women but also works on men and her cuts and shaping are incredible. I had seen a middle aged fellow come in to her station while I was sitting with color foils in my hair. He came in with a basic business man's boring helmet hairstyle. He had a great thick head of hair peppered with gray and looked around 50 plus-ish. I overheard him complain that his haircut looked pretty boring and they seemed to know each other (not sure on that). I was in the sink getting rinsed when he walked by with his new hair cut on the way to leave and I couldn't believe the difference in how he looked. Ashley had given him the most amazing haircut that took 15 years off the man's overall look and energy. It was a bad-ass haircut on a man in a suit that looked like he runs a bank and I was pretty impressed. I was in awe that not only was he hip enough to embrace a young fresh look, but that she had the kohones to give him the cut. The cut walked the line between being a man who clearly has a conservative job on some level (who wears a suit these days?) and still being something closer to what a 21/30 year old might sport on his head, without looking ridiculous. She is a natural born talent. The salon upgraded their interior design in 2018 and it was definitely due and reflects the quality of the staff more than it did in 2018. Lets face it, we all need a little refresher now and then and businesses are certainly do different. It is very clean and contemporary with bold wall paper and bass and lots of white with some grays. It was a huge improvement. I would still go to the salon if they hadn't reworked the interior because it is hard to find colorists that do this wonderful of a job, but now I feel more at home and enjoy the aroma of a more interesting design than before. All the staff are very welcoming and I'm always amazed how people remember my name if they only worked on my hair once or twice. Parking is super easy on North Avenue and I always find metered parking pretty readily. I've recommended this salon to everyone I know who needs a great colorist, not just my blonde friends. And they have suggested SalonBlonde to others (men and women) as well so I know they are pretty pleased with the salon for their cuts, color and blow outs.

What I Booked: I'm new to Chicago and found Gold Coast Salon through Google, where they're listed as a "relaxed salon" with quality work. Their website clearly advertised full babylights starting at $190+. I booked an appointment with Ashlee on 5/15 and paid a $95 deposit. She immediately requested photos of my current hair and my desired results, which I provided (see attached photos). What Happened: I arrived early to my appointment on 5/29. After examining my hair, Ashlee quoted me $680-$700 for the service without blow dry or cut. This was over 3.5 times the advertised price. I understood the "$190+" meant the price could vary, but in what world does a jump to $700 make sense? That's not a reasonable variation, it's egregious and deceptive. I came prepared for the price to be higher than the base rate, but this kind of markup is completely unreasonable for babylights on already blonde, shoulder-length fine hair. When I expressed that my budget was $300-$400, she offered to "see what she could make work." She returned with a scaled-down option: face-framing highlights and a few babylights for around $390. During this back-and-forth, she claimed the high price was due to this being a "full color correction." Look at my photos. I'm already blonde. This is clearly not a color correction situation. When I pushed back on the pricing, Ashlee condescendingly told me that this cost might not be in my "beauty budget" but it is in a lot of her other clients' budgets. This comment was not only rude and dismissive, but completely missed the point: this isn't about affordability, it's about being misled by advertised pricing. The Unacceptable Resolution: Realizing I couldn't trust her judgment or spend hours in this uncomfortable situation, I requested to simply use my $95 deposit toward a trim and leave. She refused, insisting I could only receive the service I originally booked or be charged the full amount. I left without services and with my deposit held hostage. The Issue: This is textbook bait-and-switch advertising. Advertising services at $190+ and then quoting nearly $700 in person with no transparency about pricing factors beforehand is deceptive and potentially illegal. Their own booking policy states deposits "will be applied towards your services," yet they refused to honor this for an alternative service despite their egregious pricing discrepancy. I am pursuing this matter through my credit card company and appropriate consumer protection channels. Do not book here if you value transparent pricing and honest business practices.
