My husband invited me to a dinner at PLANTA. He had a reservation. When we arrived, he walked up to the host and we were seated at one of the booth tables. I loved the interior design of the restaurant! Our waiter was so friendly. She asked us whether it was our first time there, then she explained the concept of the restaurant and how everything on the menu is plant-based vegan. They encourage family style eating so people can share - no need to ask us twice. That's our jam. Delicious!! We came for lunch and had no problem making a reservation. They offer a lunch deal that's a starter and entree for $28 but it only works if everyone at the table participates. So we did. But omg it was so much food! I ordered the Japanese sweet potato and the poke bowl with their vegan katsu. It was so crispy and delicious. We stumbled into this place while walking the warm summer days in Chicago. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating that gives off a lively city vibe. Their bar bites were fantastic. Perfect place to sip and snack but also for dinner if you have a bigger appetite. Avocado beet tartare: rich avocado and roasted beet stack garnished with cilantro and pine nuts (perfect nutty note) and served with Taro chips that are made in house daily. This taro chip really made this dish. I wish they would sell them! Summer roll: vegan rolls with fresh papaya, pickled carrots, tofu, cilantro, and basil. Served with side of peanut sauce and nuoc Cham (omg I need this sauce for home). Highly recommend Singapore noodles: ramen noodle dish with chili curry. We tried the sushi, Drunken Chik'n Noodles, Thousand-Layer Potatoes, and Kimchi Bao Sliders and everything was flavorful, fresh and beautifully presented. Planta Queen was the perfect birthday dinner! I've previously been to Planta Queen in New York and Florida, and the Chicago location absolutely did not disappoint. We ordered the Firecracker Roll, Korean Chicken Sandwich, Caesar Salad, Curried Beans & Lentils, Spicy Crunch Ramen, and finished with the date cake for dessert. Every single dish was flavorful, beautifully presented, and memorable. If you're celebrating with non-vegans, this is the place to go. The food is creative, delicious, and approachable for everyone. We had reservation and were seated in a nice booth. It has a nice casual ambiance. The serving size in this vegan place is small and most of the food are meant to be shared. Some of the dishes were very good while some are just okay. You'd may be think there's meat but don't be fooled. All dishes here are vegan. A favorite was the kimchi bao. Very flavorful with different textures from the fried mushrooms and other fillings were very good. I also liked the firecracker roll which had different textures and flavors. The edamame dumplings and spicy tuna roll were also fine. The summer rolls are like Vietnamese spring rolls except that it's tofu instead of shrimp. The Singapore noodles are not bad but they could be more flavorful. For desserts, we were disappointed that they did not have mango sticky rice even if it's just 6 pm. The matcha cheesecake had berry compote and whipped cream on top. It was good. The sticky toffee pudding had coconut caramel and vanilla ice cream which went well together. I appreciate what Planta is trying to do with vegetarian sushi, but it still tastes like vegetables rather than sushi (1 star off). I got the crispy rice with avocado and "ahi tuna" which was really watermelon...it tasted like watermelon. I liked the truffled fried rice with "bacon" which was really mushrooms...it tasted like mushrooms. I prefer Planta name foods as they are rather than pretending to be ahi tuna, bacon, or something that it's not. Despite vegetarian ingredients, the sushi prices are still fish and meat prices (1 star off). For my lunch of crispy rice and truffled fried rice, it was almost $50, and I was still hungry afterwards. read more

Ambiance is more upscale, and I'd recommend coming early or at off hours, or having a reservation. ===== Been here quite a few times, mostly for happy hour. If you can make it, Maki Monday during happy hour is definitely the best deal so you can get lots of decently priced maki rolls in addition to their happy hour specials! I always order the spicy tuna rolls, chicken fried mushrooms, and whatever dessert tempts me. The truffle udon was also quite good, though the singaporean noodles and the ramen (that I think has been removed from the menu) were disappointing. All in all one of the better vegan sushi spots I've been to! Not quite as good as Shizen in SF, which is my gold standard, but not too far off. Ambiance is more upscale and they have a good variety of seating options for both large and small groups. My dining partner and I tried the Bang Bang Broccoli, the volcano roll, the avocado-beetroot tartare, the steamed bok choy, the chilli crab noodles, and the brownie with ice cream. The broccoli was fabulous- super crispy with a flavourful peanut sauce. It was definitely the highlight of our meal. The volcano roll was a mountain of salty mayonaisse heaped on top of relatively good sushi. The overall effect was not altogether pleasant. The avocado beetroot tartare was quite good but nothing exceptional. The steamed boy choy was done very well, with a lovely soy ginger sesame sauce that paired beautifully with it. The chilli crab noodles were near inedible: very little flavour and basically floating in oil. The brownie and ice cream were good. Service was decent, and the food came out super fast. We sat outside, and enjoyed people-watching more than the meal itself. In sum, we will not return. I am vegetarian, and was super excited about going to an all-vegan sushi place, but was left quite disappointed. My pescatarian dining partner was also similarly unimpressed. read more

This is a review of their chosen delivery service, DoorDash, and their customer service. I really don't understand why anyone does business with DoorDash at this point. They are the worst of the worst, really scraping the bottom of the barrel as far as delivery services go. Once again, DoorDash abruptly canceled my order without a word about a refund. That company is trash. And this will be the last time I patronize PLANTA, either for delivery or in person food. I'm sorry, but if you take my money and give me nothing, you don't get another chance. Beware before ordering delivery from here. Their delivery partner is a total scam artist. UPDATE: DoorDash refused to refund my money, saying I needed to contact PLANTA, and PLANTA's worthless automated system made it impossible to reach a human, repeatedly refusing to give me a refund or connect me to a person. The ambiance and service was good. The kids menu was nice and had variety. My daughter loved the avocado sushi rolls and ended up with two orders of it. We got the bang bang broccoli, 1000 layer crispy potatoes, Raman crunch noodles and a couple other items. I felt some dishes were really good and some was not as flavorful or something was off. It was good overall and worth trying for one or two times. My recent experience was not the same as when I came in two years ago. While the service was quick and the appetizers were good, around a 4 out of 5, the drinks were a solid 5 out of 5. The mains, however, were disappointing and I would rate them around 2 out of 5. We tried the bang broccoli and 1000 layer potatoes, but the potatoes were underwhelming.The drinks, Spicy Not a Rita and Cosmic Colada, were refreshing and pretty good. I came back to try the truffle udon and it was LIFE CHANGING. The sauce is sooo creamy and the flavor is insane. I would have appreciated even more truffle but I truly cannot complain it was already heavenly. Since I came twice in one month I also received a surprise reward in the app for a free maki roll, so I will inevitably be back again soon. Update: Came back and got the torched and pressed roll and the 1000 layer crispy potatoes. The torched and pressed was INCREDIBLE. Definitely a must if you like truffle, the truffle flavor was so intense and the miso glaze was very unique as well. My favorite out of the sushi options for sure. Crispy potatoes were also really really good, not sure what the caviar was made out of but I've never had anything like it before. My server Jasmine was really wonderful and definitely made my visit. Welp, planta queen has done it again. Every time I try something new I think, how are they going to make the vegan version of this, good? But I never lack trust because I know everything on this menu is superb. I got the cosmic colada, made by amazing bartender Johnny. With coconut water, pineapple, and lemon, this tropical drink is fruity and sweet and I feel like I'm on a damn island. For my tastes it a little sweet but hey that's never a problem in my book. For to eat, I got the red dragon roll, made by chef Kelsey (the goat). Carrot salmon in a roll topped with crunchy pickled watermelon and masago. The perfect blend of crunchy and sweet, topped with a creamy (but remember folks, vegan!!) spicy mayo. And of course, I had again the pleasure of being seated in server Sarah's section. PLANTA Queen Chicago is such a standout in the city's dining scene. Everything from the space to the service feels intentional and well thought out. I had the edamame dumplings and the poke bowl, and both were so fresh and beautifully presented. The dumplings were smooth and flavorful, and the poke bowl had a great balance of textures and ingredients. I asked for the sauces on the side, and it still came together perfectly. You can tell the kitchen really knows how to build flavor. My husband had the Korean Chick'n Sandwich with kimchi, gochujang mayo, unagi, slaw, and cilantro, and he really enjoyed it. The flavors came together so well, and he said the tots that came with it were some of the best he has ever had, super crisp and well seasoned. The miso soup he ordered was warm and comforting, a perfect start before the meal. I also took the summer rolls to go, and they were incredibly fresh with such a nice flavor combination. They held up perfectly and still tasted bright and balanced later. They have WiFi (network: pqchicagoguest) and it is a nice calm spot to start your day, especially in the early hours on a weekday. I did not try it, but they also have oat milk vegan matchas, which I will definitely come back for next time. The restaurant itself is beautiful, modern but cozy, with an energy that makes you want to slow down and enjoy your meal. The staff was welcoming, kind, and attentive without being overbearing. It is clear that everyone here cares about creating a thoughtful plant based experience that feels elevated but still approachable. They also started cleaning up outside while we were still eating, which was quite disruptive. The edamame dumplings tasted very sour, and the portion of the sushi from the happy hour menu was small. The handrolls and nigiris are the absolute best part of the meal here - we got one of each and none disappointed, though the eggplant was a cut above (vegan food pun intended!). The deep-fried appetizers can be skipped next time - the cauliflower and broccoli were clearly pre-fried and arrived cold and soggy. The "calamari" mushroom had very little mushroom and mostly just fried flour. Instead, I highly recommend the decadent 1,000 layer potatoes and the Japanese sweet potatoes as highlights for the shared plates. We got Singapore noodles and fried rice for our entrees but I would rather have had more of the handrolls. The good aspects outweigh the negatives enough to make me want to return. We shared our dishes, so my review encompasses three opinions. The service: Our server was helpful and relaxed. She did a great job. The delivery of the food was not great. My wife and daughter had nearly finished their entrees before mine arrived, and it was presented without any indication that it was late (no apology.) The food: Appetizers: The watermelon/feta salad had complex flavors and textures and was among my personal favorites. The 1000 layer potatoes were perfectly cooked and memorable. Entrees: The poke bowl had a wide variety of flavors and textures. Fantastic. The fried rice with crispy "bacon" was a hit although there was nothing crispy in the fried rice, which we all found confusing. It was as if the person who wrote the menu didn't talk to the chef, lol. The beef broccoli was horrible. I love shiitake mushrooms (the "beef") and expected this to be interesting and flavorful. It was neither. The "beef" was incredibly stringy and tough - kind of reminded me of old celery. I was glad there were toothpicks on the way out because so much was stuck in my teeth (and I only ate two bites of it.) The broccoli tasted a bit old and was over cooked. This dish came a good 15 minutes after the other two entrees, and I only ate a few bites of it, so our server noticed all the other plates were absolutely clean and mine was nearly untouched. I hadn't planned on saying anything but she asked if it was okay. I told her despite everything else being terrific, it was awful. Without missing a beat she said she'd take it off the check which I didn't expect but appreciated. Dessert: The chocolate chunk cookie with sea salt was delicious (especially with vanilla ice cream.) Often salted desserts are over salted. This was well balanced. Sticky pudding- simple and yummy. Probably a better winter than summer dessert. I look forward to going back.
