I have been two times there and Gerri had done a great job. I have type 2B hair (wavy hair, with curls with "s". Since my hear is so thin, my hairstyle is pretty much one layer and that is it. Gerri taught me how to naturally style my curls. My curls are more defined now that she recommended me to use the deva curl products. I recommended Gerri to my sister, that has 3A type curls and has very long thick hair up to the waist. My sister has always had layers, but Gerri cut her so many layers, and so short on the top, that now she looks like a mushroom! Her layers are so short and uneven that she looks like she has over the shoulder short hair with layers on top, and put a long hair length hair extension! So now, she has to wait for the layers to grow to try to fix her hair! Other thing that really upset me is when my sister showed her a picture of the type of haircut and look she wanted based on her curl pattern. Gerri didn't believe her. My sister had her hair up and her curls where all flat for that reason. Gerri told her that there was no way she could have the curls showed in the picture, and started to believe her after she cut my sister's hair, washed it and styled it. I know many of us don't know our hair very well, and the hair stylist need to guide us, but why do we lie to a stylist! We are dealing with our hair! Since Gerri cuts the hair before she washes it, she thought my sister's hair was not as curly as my sister said it was. That is why the layers were so short. If you have very curly hair, I think Planet Curls is the place for you. Otherwise is a hit and miss. read more

Holla!!! My experience was enjoyable today, from the drive to North Main from NW Harris County (It took me about 30 mins) to Planet Curls. It's a cute, funky house in The Heights, around N. Main and 610. I'm a sucker for 1930s style homes and businesses so this was great. I was immediately offered coffee, water (spiked with strawberries) or wine. I chose coffee (Keurig) with cream. it was delicious and such a pleasant treat. I was hesitant at first - just because as y'all know it's hard to get someone to properly cut curly hair. My hair was cut dry - and I was a little nervous that I would have to explain to my husband why I paid $65 for what I hoped wasn't going to be an ordinary cut. I was worried because as she cut, my hair seemed to get wider and wider (y'all curly heads know what I'm talking about) but I said, hold on, she's not done yet. Stephanie and I discussed for the longest time what my routine is, what I use, how I dry it, how to shampoo, what to dry it with, etc. We went to wash my hair, and she was still instructing me and educating me. After washing, she sat me under the dryer for about 15 mins. When I looked at my self for the first time, I was delighted. My hair takes a long time to dry, and it was still somewhat damp but that's okay, I am used to never, ever letting a blow dryer near my head and walking out of salons with hair wetter than this. But sitting under a hair dryer is different. My hair is curlier than it's ever been thanks to the cut and the product used. Every time I look at my hair, I enjoy it more and more. My husband loves it. I have yet to wash it and style it myself, so if there's something going on, I'll be sure to update. Stephanie was knowledgeable and very pleasant. I trusted her from the get-go and I have high hopes for the endurance of my cut. I'm pretty much a wash and go girl, and Planet Curls suits me perfectly. This salon is very nice and quaint in the heights area. The owner was able to keep the natural beauty of the house. I went after seeing it was open and it was 3 blocks away from our house. I have curly hair but usually straighten it, not chemically. Overall the people were nice, the environment was what I would say is on par for normal salons that offer wine with your haircut. However the reason for the three stars is that I've been going to all kinds of salons, all over the country. I've experience various pricing, but what I am used to is $130-$180 for a cut and color. I went in for only a cut, after a botched cut, I did however like my color. Essentially a cut cost me $90 out the door, which I thought was crazy. I had just paid $160 at another salon for a cut and color. To me that was more normal, not $90 for a cut. One other good and bad thing was that I had to go back to get it recut because it still wasn't right. The extra time always is tough, but they did it without charge and they did it happily. Best. Haircut. EVER!! Took my daughter in because her hair is kinky corkscrews and no one has been able to cut or style her hair properly. They either want to relax it, straighten it, and when they cut it, it always looks choppy. I brought her in because the poor girl had mats and bad ends (yes I know, bad mom)!! I read the reviews so decided to give this place a try. Charlie, her stylist, was awesome. He asked me what we wanted to accomplish, then proceeded to explain what he was going to do, then cut her hair. DRY. No one had ever done this! It's great, because then you have a better idea how the hair is going to lay. She got a deep conditioner (they suggested it, but she definitely needed it!) as well. He then showed and thoroughly explained how to take care of her hair- cleanse, conditioning, and style. He was so patient and thorough!! The price was $35 for the kids cut and style and $20 for the conditioning, which I thought was totally reasonable considering I've paid more at other places and had disastrous results. Will be coming back for my haircut now. This place rocks and Charlie is awesome!! read more

I came to Houston from San Francisco for the holidays, really needing a haircut after being too busy in the weeks prior to Christmas. I was so nervous to have a deva cut here - I always go to the great Madusalon in SF for my deva cuts. When the haircut started I was anxious and nuts. I spend a lot of money to have the kind of hair people routinely compliment me on. Honestly, I thought about leaving just before Charlie got started. He just laughed and told me to relax. He kept stopping to show me what he was doing and reassured me that I wasn't being a complete pain in the ass (which I absolutely was being). After I came out from under the dryer I saw that he'd really done a fantastic job and realized that I'd been in good hands all along. My hair is bouncy and gorgeous again, a curly blond Afro, just how I like it! I was amazed that the price for this awesome cut was only $65 dollars. Whenever I usually go to a salon to have my split-ends trimmed and layered, I come out completely traumatized and hating my 'new' hairstyle. Mushroom cuts, christmas trees, I've had it all. NOT THIS PLACE. This is the first haircut I've had that they don't completely hack all of my hair off. HALLELUJAH! I am the type to be deathly afraid of haircuts. My last hair appointment was 2 years ago. This, compounded with a childhood experience of almost having my ear cut off by a shoddy stylist, I absolutely HATE getting my haircut. After being recommended by one of my classmates (she has gorgeous curls and had the same problem as me), I reluctantly went and tried Planet Curls. I did a walk-in appointment with Charlie. He was very understanding of my thick, wavy hair's bad history and went to work on it. He did exactly what I wanted him to do, and was very patient and conservative about cutting my hair. He did a dry cut, conditioning and let it dry to see if there was anymore styling that needed to be done. I had to ask him to cut more layers after it dried! This was definitely a FIRST. I am usually begging the stylist to stop cutting...but by then, it's too late. This was the first haircut in forever that I didn't feel like my hair was butchered. I actually walked out with the majority of my hair! Charlie took my gnarly split ends out without sacrificing the length. My hair looks gorgeous and healthy now, and I've received so many compliments. $65 for a haircut was reasonable compared to all of times I've had Japanese hair straightening, relaxers, emergency room visits. Just had my first visit to Planet Curls. I had been growing my hair out, but needed a change and decided to get couple or so inches cut and a nice style. Charlie was my stylist. He was nice enough, very personable. He sat me down and I told him I wanted a cut. He asked why I didn't want to keep it long (judging by a couple other reviews, I take it he likes longer hair). I told him why (I have very personal reasons in my life right now) and showed him a picture of something I liked. He didn't object, and showed me some things he could do. I wanted to leave it his hands for the most part. He does dry cuts, which I've never had done before. It was a little odd, but not bad. It was a very...unconventional experience! He darted around me, doing a cut here and a snip there. It was kind of...artistic, maybe? He washed and styled my hair after doing the cut. He gave me some AWESOME tips for how I should be washing and styling my hair for best results, which I really appreciated. Only complaint is that he left me under the dryer and didn't come back to check on me. The dryer turned off, and I didn't know if it needed to be turned on again. He was nowhere to be found, though. Someone else eventually came over and turned it on. So I felt slightly ignored in that regard. The experience overall was great, and I love my hair. I have been seeing Gerri (formerly at Blue Mambo) since moving to Houston 6 years ago and am so happy for her that she opened her own salon! I've had too many "mushroom cuts" in my life by stylists who have no idea how to cut curly hair and I did my research to find Gerri. She is easily the best at cutting/styling curls in Houston and I won't let anyone else near my head with scissors. Try to wear your hair down when you go in- she will cut each individual curl dry, and I agree with the previous reviewer to call ahead to check if Gerri is on schedule-- she can run a little late (but when you're in the chair it is good to know she won't rush the job). read more

Macy did not listen to a word I said prior to cutting..I told her exactly what I wanted. My hair parts on the left and was one length to my right ear until Macy cut my hair at eye level which is now literally in my eyes. I'm so upset I paid the BILL!! There's a very weird vibe about this place and utterly no customer service what so every. If you're considering getting your hair cut at Planet Curl BEWARE! I went in here with the wrong frame of my mind. I have some notorious trouble areas in the front and top of my head which will not curl. I expected that by coming here the stylist would be able to dust some major on hair and curls would appear out of nowhere because I was doing it wrong. Not many people can handle my hair because it is super thick and voluminous. So I have to give props to the stylist for being able to comb my hair out without making me scream because I am very tender headed. My cousin gave me the book they sell at their front desk and I don't think they really follow it. For my type of hair, a lot of product should be left in the hair and not too much rinsed out. Then add on some products like gel afterwards. I don't think enough product was put in my hair in the first place and it felt like a good amount of it was rinsed off. After my hair dried, I did not like what I saw in the mirror. The top and front were frizzy. I put my hair in a bun when I got in the car. I changed my mind once I got home and decided to do 2 braids in the front of my hair and tie them in the back to look like a head band and let my hair free. I got a lot of compliments. Day 2 I wore it down again,but I didn't know how to maintain it so it's back in a bun. To be honest, I think I can easily do this myself instead of paying $35. All I would need to do is purchase a dryer and watch the plenty of YouTube videos on how to style and maintain naturally curly hair. read more

You know how a haircut can look amazing in-store, and then you get home and it looks completely different doing your usual thing (shower, styling, etc.)? Unfortunately this happened me. The only way I feel comfortable wearing my hair right now is up. In honesty the staff was super nice (hence the 3 stars), but I'm completely devastated. They do dry haircuts there, then wash and style. Don't get me wrong - dry haircuts have their place. But how can the stylist know what kind of bounce your hair has if they don't wet it at some point - especially if you came in wearing your hair pulled back? I'll be the first to admit, I'm not a huge fan of my hair. It has a mind of it's own and we've tussled with each other for years. Then, I found Planet Curls. It's such a rare treat to find a place dedicated to helping dry, frizzy and misbehaving hair, that it has me wondering if opening the door to this funky shop really is like walking into a new planet. Gerri, my new favorite human being and owner of the shop, wields her scissors through my annoying fat, mud flap/dreadlock-like curls with a samurai warrior's precision. She's able to patiently tame my crazy hair while helping to hide my thinner patches, leaving me feeling like I can go without a hat and actually "play" with my hair. I absolutely love this place! It's a family owned place where the owner and two of her sons are hair stylists there! I love Gerry she always cuts my hair, and i wear hijab and since the first time i cut my hair with her she accommodated my preferences and had me at the end of the day after closing just to cut my hair to kick all the men out! So considerate and so nice about it too, but now they have a room that i can take off my hijab in and she cuts my hair there. Every-time i get my haircut there, my hair looks so refreshed and beautiful. They really know how to cut curly hair and their methods are amazing. They offer great products as well and i love the hair treatments they offer. I even brought my brother to get his haircut here. Charli cut his hair and he absolutely loved it! Plus charli being such an awesome person and hair stylist just made the experience 10x better. I loved talking to him and getting to know him, and so did my brother and he loved how his hair turned out. He had long curly hair and did a taper and it came out so nicely. Yes you can say it's a bit pricey for a haircut, but this work takes a lot effort and attention to detail and design. So in my opinion, you get your money's worth af. My sister also gets her haircut here (picture) and she also loves it and gets her hair dyed bc they use safe coloring that won't damage your hair bc they genuinely care about your curls and know what works and what doesn't. This place has a nice homey feeling. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Their process of cutting curly hair is completely different than what I have ever experienced. The cut your hair dry and kind of eyeball it as they go. I initially came in for a trim and some layers expecting my hair to keep most of the length I had but my hair was cut much shorter than I had wanted. It's still long but not the length I wanted. I've never been one to go to salons for haircuts so the hour and 45 minute time it took to cut, wash and dry my hair was a bit excessive for me when I expected to be there for 45 minutes max. The staff is very knowledgable about curly hair, products, styling, etc., but for what I prefer, I don't think I'll return. I'd recommend this place for anyone to try. I began my curly girl journey when I lived in NYC in 2005. I was transformed from doing hour long blowouts to having my wavy curls set at the infamous Devachan Salon in SoHo. I moved to San Francisco a few years later. The first thing I did was look to where there was a salon that specializes in the Deva Cut. Unfortunately I quickly found that not all are created equal. After years in the SF Bay area, and trying different spots, I resorted back to traditional cuts. (Boo!) My hair was REAWAKENED at Planet Curls. Two stars might be a bit to generous, after I thought about it. I think what bothered me the most about my experience at Planet Curls was the waste of money, because about a month later I was back at my usual salon, paying them to fix what wasn't done the first time. My stylist was Charlie, he was nice enough, but he didn't seem terribly inspired to be there. I kind of felt like just another head of hair on his assembly line of never ending curly girls. I've been trying to grow out a bad layering job and I'd finally managed to grow most of it out so I chose this salon because I wanted to get it right this time. Long story short, the cut was almost nonexistent except for, you guessed it, the super short layers literally just on the crown of my head. And then a mullet on the bottom.. He forgot I asked for my roots done and only remember when Jerri walked in and reminded him of it. I wish she hadn't because then I would have not wasted the money on it. No consultation, was darker that what I wanted, and washed out way faster than another color I've had. No, I'll never come back here again. read more

My appointment was 04/20. I booked an appointment with Gerri (Owner). She was super sweet. The cut was very quick but she just gave me a trim. I emphasized I wanted to avoid shrinkage, and she relayed the message to her son. Her son washed and styled my hair. During that he was also training a new gal..so he took extra time on my hair doing that. I thought he explained the process to her very well. I don't like how he styled my hair and sitting under the dryer my hair shrunk up and I looked like a poodle. I do know I have shrinkage being that I have type 4 curls but washing my hair at home it doesn't shrink that crazy. Plus, the products he used was too greasy. I don't think the cut or style was worth the 100. If I were to ever go back I'd book with Daniel. read more

Daniel is the best! He is the only stylist I'd trust with my hair. He gives me a phenomenal cut (and color) every time. He doesn't do a half assed job. He is very intuitive, but not pushy. Really disappointed with the establishment. I made an appointment for my 12 year old daughter and when they came out to the car to check her in they let me know i couldn't go in because only the person getting a haircut could go in. I said fine but please ask the stylist to come out as i want to show him exactly how we wanted her hair to be cut. First he was annoyed that he had to come out for instructions because it was sprinkling. After he saw what we wanted he said he will take good care of her and suggested we buy a shampoo and conditioner and cream. I told him once your done to let me know that I'm paying. After the fact he took it upon himself to charge for an extra product i didn't want. Tipped himself and i didn't receive an itemized receipt. They just charge my card i put on file when i made the appointment online. Second thing is after i was clear with what i wanted he took it upon himself to cut bangs on my daughters hair. Took us 2 years to let her hair grow after she cut bangs to herself. I will never come back to this place or recommend you. Waste of $234 read more

Not one to give reviews but never coming back here again. Felt completely ignored everything was fine in the beginning until Katie I think that's her name took me to the back to get my hair washed (by someone else) and never saw her again... another girl had to finish off drying my hair after she saw me waiting for 20 min+. Like?? Asking me where's my stylist like huh??? Turns out she was just chilling in the office. Very unprofessional like I booked her, not 3 other stylists. Everyone else had their stylist working on their hair from start to finish. She was nice and stuff but was completely baffled by the fact she decided to ignore me while a paying customer was waiting on her to finish. Don't know if she had an emergency but having me wait thinking it's just part of the process and having other stylists asking what am I waiting for like if my hair isn't wet and was wearing a whole cape was upsetting. She was quick to charge me for another $120 for toning which did absolutely nothing my hair looks the exact same from when I brought it in so now I'm just wondering if she even told the other stylist who was washing hair in the back about the toning. It was my first Curly cut experience with them and last. Regret driving an hour and spending $300 on a service that was in no way worth it. But if there's anything good to say I think the male stylists are great I was listening to them give their customers very good information and tips while I had to eavesdrop. I didn't realize how this situation actually made me feel until I left. Never want to feel unattended again especially after paying you guys hundreds for the minimum and First Experience. read more
