Another conveniently located store. It's right on the subway line & so easy to find. The selection in this PJ's isn't the best, because of the small footprint of the store. But it seems to have the essentials for stocking up or when you are getting your first pet. They have many adorable puppies & often kittens for sale in the store. Though I would never buy one here so as not to support any puppy or kitten mills. Also, their prices for these puppies & kittens are ridiculous. $1900 for a kitten? Even if it is a pure breed, there are so many animals in shelters looking for homes. I recommend anyone interested in getting a pet to visit a shelter or a store (like Pet Smart) that partners with pet rescues & adopt instead of buying. I hate to say it, but this is where I got my dog...and he's really the best thing ever. I got very very lucky with Finn. The fact that he's well behaved, healthy and has never shown any signs of a puppy mill is excellent and made me believe in "pet stores" if only for a fleeting second. I will say that I'm not a fan of their other locations - specifically the Square One location...the dogs are to many in a window. When I got Finn he had his one cage/window and the staff was very good with him, and his area was very clean. The staff seem to care a lot about the animals there and they did a check on me and I had to fill out forms to make sure I was a suitable owner, and they were extra vigilant because it was around Christmas. They also mentioned that they refuse to sell or even carry black cats around Halloween and bunnies around easter to assure that the animals are going into the right homes. When I was ready to take Finn home, they gave him a bath and put a free dose of revolution on him. They also helped me pick out the correct crate for his training and threw in some items I would need. He still has his first toy from there - albeit it's beaten up - as that was 3 years ago. As bad as this is going to sound, Finn also came with a "warranty", but it covered any health problem he was born with or anything that he picked up in their care. He also came with a record of his shots and such. I will admit, that warranty came in handy since he was born with a cherry eye that needed surgery and he had picked up a parasite as well as dog lice....yes, he had some health issue, but nothing life threatening, more just annoying. I'm not going to suggest you buy your pet here, or from any pet store....but I will say that pet store animals need good homes too. If you do decided to get your pet from a pet store, this is the one I would go to. On top of selling great animals - they have pictures of all of their animals they have put into good homes around the puppy area as well as at the front cash area - they sell great food, as well as all the supplies you will need. read more

I have never bought any pets here, but come by the store to check out the kittens once in awhile. I agree with my fellow yelpers that the kittens are way over priced (ie. $999 for a Persian), I suggest you to get a kitten from Toronto Animal Rescue - they have tons of cats needing a good home. Now that puppies aren't allowed to be sold at pet shops, the variety of pets sold at this location has gone down drastically. They still have a good amount of lizards, amphibians and other creepy crawlers. I witnessed the feeding, and was absolutely disgusted. The staff member was feeding crickets to one of the lizards, and he picked one up to drop into the cage, but the cricket got away and this happened 4-5 times before the staff member successfully fed the lizard. Now, I'm not speaking for the general public, but I'm pretty sure nobody would feel at ease with crickets jumping around the store freely. I felt itchy all over right away, and had to leave the store. As a result, I tend to just stay by the entrance, which is where they keep the kittens anyways. I definitely don't feel comfortable buying anything from a store infested with crickets. read more

Although this is one of the only multi-purpose pet stores with livestock in the downtown Toronto area I would NOT shop there again. The store is severely understaffed - two part timers trying to service 10 plus customers at once, while also working the cash register. They did not provide me with any advice and/or knowledge so if you do choose to shop there make sure you research what you are doing/getting ahead of time. I bought a Betta fish from this location and within one day he had already shown signs of fin rot. I have changed his water twice since getting him one week ago and this has not helped. The staff at the store said they do not accept returned fish unless they die within one week. What kind of guarantee is that? Now I have had to purchase almost $50 of extra medicine to nurse this fish back to health. They clearly need to improve the water and space conditions for these fish. I cannot comment on the other pets for sale here, however I would NOT recommend this store for fish keepers. Hopefully I can save someone else the inconvenience and financial burdens of purchasing sick aquatic animals at this store. read more

I am torn because I really do not like supporting stores that sell animals - but it is one of few stores in the area that sell quality foods. In fact, I think it is the only store in the area that sells Wellness, which is what my cats eat. If anyone knows differently, help a Yelper out! DO NOT SUPPORT THIS OR ANY OTHER PJ's PETS store. Go in today (November 24th, 2011) and you'll see two FIVE month old cats, one white, one multi-color long haired cats (they claim -are from breeders.) The white one you'll see - has an eye infection. They are both skinny, listless, unresponsive & depressed. When asked how long they would stay there if noone bought them - the kid behind the desk said 'as long as it takes.' Imagine the life these poor souls have led in a 2x3 cage. Not knowing love. Not able to run, play & jump. Caged overnight each night - and during the day. Here's the BEST part: They're NOT up for adoption - despite their age - only sale. And for the great deal of $788.00 each !!!!!!!!! What do you think the odds are that someone will buy them...when right behind them are 2 playful siamese kittens maybe 6-8 wks old. You can imagine how relieved I was to hear that there were yet more cat's coming to this location. Please DO support organizations that RESCUE & FOSTER or visit your local HUMANE SOCIETY. PJ's has released press releases indicating they're no longer selling dogs...great news considering they were all from puppy mills by the way. While this has stopped? What about the cats???? How do they not qualify??? Please I beg - do not support this disgusting organization in any way shape or form. Food/supplies can be found elsewhere at Global foods or otherwise. read more

I'm kind of uncomfortable with how they treat their pets. They are kept in very small cages. There will be like five hamsters (mixed genders? who knows?) in one cage that is smaller than my hamster cage - which is for one hamster. Hamsters are not supposed to be together in a cage because they aren't social animals. The employees here ... some are really rude and seem like they don't care about the animals at all ... and others are cheerful and helpful and seem like they do care. I bought one of my hamsters here a while back. (I was sad because my other hamster died and I just needed another hamster to make me feel better ... yeah I'm not proud of it but it happened.) The way the employee treated the hamster just wasn't pleasant. I buy all my hamster and guinea pig food/hay/supplies here, just because there isn't a good store for small animals close to me, close to my work, or on the subway line. Awesome store. I have lots of pets and well they need supplies. They sell high-end foods as well as other cheaper brands. They are small and cozy but they know their shit. Alex is awesome and knows about all animals. The manager (I dont know her name) is funny and friendly, knows lots. (we are regulars here too!) For birds go to the bigger store, they have more to choose from and bird trainers on site. The animals are let out regularly compared to their big location where you cant touch them! The bigger store has more options but not as awesome staff. Some things are over priced but its toronto baby! read more

I have to say the store has really good upkeep.... i bought my male black bear hamster from them.. he is the sweetest thing. :) He reminds me of my old female blackbear Lola (passed away) Anyways their store has pretty good upkeep, and good customer service. PJS sells a lot more pets and living creatures than PetSmart. Petsmart carries a not a lot at all. After all I think this PJs is one of the best. :) read more

Had to track down an aquarium store after the one at Scarborough Town centre closed. A. The aquariums were clean and well maintained. B. There was a wide variety of interesting reptiles and birds. C. There was a decent selection of aquariums, equipment and food. D. When the store was quiet the staff were actively looking after the animals. Bottom line- this store is conveniently located in relation to the subway and has enough variety to make a visit worthwhile. A find. read more

I can't speak on behalf of the dogs & cats (which seem to be receiving bad reviews), but in terms of the tropical fish, PJ's Pets is pretty good. The selection wasn't great in this particular store, but they had some pretty good deals. I ended up paying only $6 for 3 Siamese Algae Eaters, which the cool, knowledgable staff gave me an additional discount for. They have *specials* every month which you can check out on their e-Flyer. The shop in Eglinton/Yonge is very close to the TTC as well, which is another major plus. read more

i hate to say this too, i also got my dog from here.. it was totally unplanned, i was meeting a friend in the area, once i got there she told me she was in the pet store playing with a puppy.. anyways of course i totally fell in love with the puppy, and couldnt leave without her.. and that was that.. shes the most loving dog ever, and im so glad i got her.. im aware of what goes on in puppy mills, and i really never intended on supporting them.. but now that i have my dog and have gotten this attached to her, im really glad i got her.. she still deserves a good home no matter where she came from.. so about the pet store.. so they lied to me about the breed of my dog.. they said she was a boston terrier/french bulldog mix, and shes actually a boston terrier/jack russell mix.. im not sure if they were aware of her breed and lied on purpose because frenchies are more expensive, or if they were told that was her breed.. anyways thats a pretty big mistake, but my fault for purchasing animals from a pet store! she also came with a parasite, but that was easily treated.. shes actually healthy (knock on wood), we haven't had any problems with her health (its been a year).. but she has some behavioral issues, the main one being separation anxiety.. which im sure has to do with her past.. there were also other things that the pjs staff were not honest with us about, but i wont get into that.. anyways even though i love my dog and cant imagine my life without her, i really dont recommend this place at all since they don't even know the breeds of the dogs they are selling (or are lying about them to make more money).. read more

PJ's Pet stores sell dogs from puppy mills. Any pet store that sells dogs and cats gets them from puppy mills. Even though they look all cute and you feel bad for them being in their small cages, DON'T BUY THEM! If you do, you are just supporting the puppy mill industry. If you want a dog or cat, get it from a Humane Society, local adoption centre, a reputable breeder, or at a place like PetSmart where they have cats (and sometimes dogs) for ADOPTION. These pets come from local humane societies or other rescue organizations. Plus, if you adopt, its WAYYY cheaper than getting a "free kitten" or a puppy mill puppy from a store. Adopted pets come up to date on all vaccinations, "fixed", and are in good health. Do your research! And don't support pet stores who SELL dogs and cats! read more
