Place is filthy, full of feces and tens of animals are packed into single cages stacked one on top of the other. Feces is literally crusting on the inside of the glass of the store front. Most pet shops carry only cat food or dog treats, but Marta's has it all! Their selection of fish, hamsters, rabbits, birds, and rats (the reason I went) made this place the kind of pet store you could spend all day wandering. Upon immediate entrance my first thought was "small, stuffy and smells like animals" though i soon became fond of these aspects. The staff were very personable and gave me all the time I needed to make my decision, letting me hold rats, birds and guinea pigs alike. I walked out with exactly what I was hoping for and then some. Ok, so yelp reviews are usually either because you've had a terrible experience, or you've had an outstanding experience and want to make others aware. This review, unfortunately will not be for the latter. I went into this store to get my little shih tzu some freeze dried treats because we feed him performatrin ultra and to get him to eat all of it, we crush some treats onto his food so he likes it more. My experience went as follows: I walk into the store, nobody is anywhere to be seen, Im standing at the counter for at least 5 minutes before some little girl from the back comes out. I ask her if there are any other freeze dried treats and she started asking me questions about my dog. I told her that hes a small dog and he only eats all his food when we put some crushed treats on top and she told me that I was spoiling my dog and of course he would do that. She proceeded to recommend to me "wet dog food". Now, I never asked for her opinion in the first place. She asked me what kind of food I fed to him and I told her Performatrin ultra (which is 26.99 for small bag) and she had no idea what I was talking about. Then she became very snark and accused me of feeding him 3 dollar dog food. and then she tried to school me on what to feed him and why, again! (wet food, or some no name garbage that she gave me a free sample of when I was leaving.) I find it hard to believe that someone would come in, pay 9.99 for a small bag of treats for his dogs food, and only buy him garbage 3$ dog food, so right away you know that this person does not use her brain effectively. She is a complete know it all. Anyone with half a brain knows that wet food is HORRIBLE for dogs to eat daily. Any Vet will tell you its like feeding your dog fast food. I know way more about my dog then her, so for future reference, maybe she should only give advice if asked! My dog eats more expensive food than I do for Christ sake. This place is a dump. Its cluttered, smells bad and has horrible service. This place must be drowining in debt. eww. Never again! (Oh, and everything in this store is ridiculously over-priced!) read more

We found this great pet store on line this past week and we decided to give it a try this afternoon. The moment I called to ask if they were still open, the girl who answered the phone was very pleasant and said we still had time to visit, so we headed there and were amazed by the love and care they give to their pets. The owner is so knowledgeable and kind and his assistant is such a sweetheart!!! We absolutely loved the store and our son fell in love with a budgie that we ended up buying and will return next week to pick it up! We feel soooo lucky to have found this place just few minutes away from our place. If you ever have the need to find a bird or a small pet, this is the place to go to! read more

We found this pet store on Yelp. After reading the amazing reviews, we decided to give them a call to see if they had any baby budgies - they did! We visited the next day and was able to pick out a healthy budgie, a cage and some accessories. John and Claire were very knowledgeable, patient, and friendly towards us. We were allowed plenty of time to hang out with the budgies before we decided on a hand-fed white and blue baby. We even called back the next day to ask more about the budgie, and they provided an amazing post-purchase customer service! Pets are healthy and prices are quite decent. I just wish they were closer as we live downtown. We will definitely recommend this to everyone, and will come back whenever we're around the area! read more

The store is tiny but the staff are really knowledgeable and helpful. I go there to buy my pet food since a 40lb bag is the same price as a 15lb bag of blue buffalo at pet valu, and the products used in it are all free range. They give out sample products of their food all the time, and generally throw in a free treat for my two dogs (which they know by name) when I pick up my food. It feels really good to be supporting an independent business and they definitely show you the utmost appreciation for doing so. She even stayed open 15 minutes past closing because I called and said I was on my way. I would recommend anyone stopping by to see what they can offer your pet; some of the clothing items and toys are a bit more expensive then they would be at a grocery store but for the service I get; I don't mind. read more

I went to this store and saw 6 hamsters in a tiny tank kind you one was being attacked so bad by the other his eyes and back where bleeding I asked the lady how much he was she replied $25 I said but he is sick and hurt he may not make a week. She insisted $25, I could not believe it. Then I get to the counter and she is being very nosy, asking question about my dog, which I didn't have with me then when I replied I have a small dog she then starts showing me items (that she wanted me to buy) and when I insisted I have enough of those or don't need that she got snippy with me. Tiny store where your c rammed trying to walk through. Animals are in horrible condition. More worried about the money then the health of the animals. I recently went back (mind you I normally wouldn't go back to a store I do not like but I'm a huge animal lover so it's a need for me to check on them) and this poor hedgehog was walking back and forth which means it's under stress. They had hamster food in the bowl, pine shavings no toys or wheel and in a tiny tank. Poor thing needs a new proper home fast. . read more

There aren't that many pet shops in Toronto and the ones I usually find are not pet shops at all - usually only dog food and collars, cat stuff and some tank stuff. This is like going to the zoo. but in a good way. There are tons of kittens, birds, small animals and lizards too. When I last went to check out parakeets - i have two of them so far (Paco & Shakira) I ended up buying a tank with a betta fish. Lydia, the owner's daughter was awesome. She seriously knows everything there is to know and took time to get me brained up on pet care. If you're looking to buy a hamster, I would avoid this store. I went there one Sunday afternoon looking for a Syrian male hamster. When I got there I found two small tanks filled with three hamsters in one tank and two in another. I saw one hamster in the three-hamster tank repeatedly and viciously attack another to the point where the bullied hamster was squeaking and laying flat on her back. I immediately knew I wanted to take that hamster home as the employees were not doing anything to separate them and the hamster was clearly stressed. The woman that attended to me was very unknowledgeable yet spoke with confidence and an air of superiority. She claimed that "Syrian" simply referred to the hamster's colour and that there were no gender differences in personality unless the female was pregnant. When I told her I wanted the hamster that was being attacked, she grabbed the squeaking hammy roughly by the scruff and threw it into an old cardboard box which she proceed to loudly tape with a tape gun. The hamster started squeaking even louder (I've owned many hamsters before and never heard anything like it) so I quickly decided to buy a carrying cage so that it would be more comfortable. The hamster settled down pretty quickly after we left the store. However, a month later she's still very scared and distrustful of humans (who could blame her). The tanks the hamsters were housed in at the store were very small and did not contain a wheel or a hamster house or anything that most basic pet stores typically supply. My overall experience purchasing my hammy was horrible and I got the impression the woman who attended to me did not care about the well-being of hamsters or know anything about them at all (despite claiming that she's "been doing this for over 30 years"). Hamsters are delicate animals and they get stressed easily. She did everything possible to increase that hamster's stress levels. I'm just happy I got the hamster out of those awful conditions because I don't know if she'd still be alive. read more

Excellent find from Yelp. This little shop is awesome. Called after finding review on yelp to see if they sold pet birds. John answered my call. John was very helpful. Not only did they have the bird I was looking for but had my choice of three. Arriving at the shop there's plenty of parking. The shop is small but they seem to have everything you could want. They carried twice as many bird baths as any other shop. Absolutely amazing variety of bird seeds. Found the seed I buy for a dollar a bag cheaper here. John showed me the three birds and allowed me plenty of time to select the one I wanted. All the birds I viewed in this shop were in excellent health. Johns assistant Natasha was busy keeping the pets well fed and cleaning cages. I found this pet shop on yelp. Went to buy a bird. Met two fabulous passionate pet lovers John and Natasha. Saw stuff I'd never seen before ( blue worms ) and not only left with a beautiful bird but a free sample of cat food. I will be back to buy more from this shop read more
