Tips:
- For both online and deals at this Pizzaville, I recommend ordering through the app or its online site.
- Green pepper as a topping to me meant green bell peppers. At this place, you get hot green peppers that are small.
- The panzerotti is yummy. The two ponzos deal is better price-wise, which allows you to get two toppings in each.
If you grew up in the greater Toronto area and listened to the radio, chances are that you have heard a male Brit voice saying in an ad, "It was a rainy day in Pizzaville...."
Back when we didn't need extra area codes, you'd hear the man say, "Call seven-three-six, three-six, three-six." In one ad on the radio, he actually said, "Call seven-three-six, three-six, three-six. NOT seven free-sex, free-sex, free-sex."
It was as spicy as you could get on top-40 radio. They were memorable ads.
As a kid growing up in the Beaches, I passed by the local Pizzaville location on Queen Street East. My parents and I never got pizza from this place. We ended up going to either Pizza Pizza or driving further north to get Pizza Hut.
This Pizzaville location is in a plaza with Giant Tiger and Dollarama. This pizza joint is a few steps away from the latter.
You know what? I had never ordered anything from Pizzaville. The horror!
I shook things up when I decided to grab some lunch here on a Saturday afternoon. After running some errands, I pulled into the plaza and parked in front of this eatery. I then pulled out my app and placed an order.
The app has a panzerotti special called two panzos. You can get two of them with two toppings each for $18.73 before taxes. Perfect!
My panzos:
- Sausage, mushroom, and garlic
- Cup-n-char pepperoni, green peppers, and chilli flakes
There are free items. The garlic and chilli flakes were free.
For dessert, I got tiramisu.
I paid for everything through the app. It was a smooth transaction. I will say that the last four digits of my credit card on my e-mail receipt did not match what my actual credit card's last four digits were. I'm not sure if it was deliberate, but checking my online credit card statement did show that my order was charged properly.
Weird.
I waited in my car for my order to be ready. It said twenty minutes, which was enough time for me to get caught up with my inbox. Yikes!
When you head into this eatery, there's a step before you open the door. Be mindful of it. If there wasn't a sign that said to watch my step, I would have not noticed it until I was on the ground.
This eatery has bar seating on either side of the doors. I got a welcome from a young man behind the counter. I said that I was picking up an order. He nodded and headed to the oven area. There was a warming area with my panzos.
He came back and throughly checked what he was giving me against my order. I appreciated his attention to detail. He had my box with the panzos. He got two containers of panzo sauce. He also fetched my tiramisu from the fridge. He put all these items in a plastic bag and handed it over with my box. I thanked him and happily left with my food.
I looked forward to chowing down.
I wasn't sure how large the panzos would be. They were larger than my hand. I was impressed.
I cut both panzos in half. I had the cup-and-char pepperoni, green peppers, and chilli flakes one first. The cup-and-char pepperoni means that each pepperoni slice curled and charred at the edges when cooked. They were yummy, as was the sauce and cheese in the panzo.
I thought that green peppers meant green bell peppers. It wasn't the case here. Think small green peppers that are sliced into small rounds and have a kick. You see them in Hakka-style dishes like chilli chicken on rice. Well, I got those green peppers in my panzo. It was quite the surprise. It did form quite the kick with the chilli peppers.
I suppose that my love for chilli chicken prepared me for this spicy surprise. I won't be getting green peppers here again. My panzo was fine with the chilli flakes kick alone!
The sausage, mushroom, and garlic panzo was delicious. No surprises. It was comforting eating this panzo.
I dipped both panzos in the panzo sauce. It was yummy, fresh marinara sauce. I got two containers and polished them off.
The tiramisu was an individual portion. It was excellent. I loved the lady fingers that were dipped in espresso with the best mascarpone. If you feel like tiramisu that is in cup form, get some here.
Overall, I had a decent first experience at Pizzaville. I want to get a pizza next time. It has options for those who are vegan and gluten-free. I also saw pasta and salads on the menu, so I'll return to check those out, too.
