A little surprised at how lukewarm the reviews are for this place...Pizza J was the second restaurant I visited in Providence, actually. My parents were helping me move into my new place and made as much of a trip as they could have out of helping their daughter move pretty much entirely up the length of the Eastern Seaboard. My parents would take walks hoping to make Providence feel smaller than what it was. One evening, my dad came back with his face shining and said, "Nupur, we found pizza just like the one we used to have in Syracuse." This pizza from a specific pizzeria held a very special place among our family's all time favorite foods. I'd apparently house whole slices myself as a two year old, much to the owners' delight. I wanted to taste as an adult what apparently sparked my lifelong love of pizza. My parents were also eager to back immediately. So my mother and I traipsed back to Pizza J the very next day and they got an American Beauty Pizza, which is what they'd tried the day before. As far as cheese pizza goes, this is perfect for what it is. Great thin crust with just the right amount of chew, sauce with slight sweetness, not too much cheese and perfect with or without toppings. It really hit the spot. My parents and I went back to Pizza J the next day and the day after. I sampled other items like their excellllent fried broccoli but we really just kept coming back for the pizza. My parents even bought a large pizza the last day and froze whatever was leftover so I could have Pizza J in a pinch. There was a lot of life lived in the 2.5 years between that pizza laden week and today and somehow I didn't find my way back to Pizza J until tonight. It was a really blustery night and a slow day on call so I ordered Pizza J for myself and my friend at work. We got the American Beauty with mushrooms, the Tony Clifton Pizza (herbed ricotta, red pepper, garlic, red onion and mozzarella) and garlic fries. The pizza was perfect. The American Beauty was exactly how I'd remembered it with the mushrooms ultimately being a net neutral. The Tony Clifton was a total star as well. It hit all the notes that I look for in pizza with such a nice contrast in rich ricotta and the umami of mozzarella. I'll stop before the pretension lands me on some parody Yelp review on YouTube. I realized I'm neither clunky enough to be on one of those reviews nor am I good enough a critic to be poke fun at myself about my writing so yeah. The garlic fries nearly stole the show though. I'm a weirdo about cheese so I requested the Parmesan off. The fries had shavings of what looked like Parmesan. I tried one and it was actually thin shavings of garlic that were so long and lacy that they looked like Parmesan! Incredible if you're vegan or if you're me. Anyway, Pizza J is a gem. Ohhhh Pizza J: I've been here twice, possibly three times and I've never been thrilled. The pizza is not all that good and considering how many other options there are in Providence there are to choose from, I will likely will never go back. Today I participated in the food fight pizza promo. Upon arrival, I was given the choice of one slice of pizza, which I had to eat there. I was reminded it was "dine in only". Really? You offered me one slice and my choices were slim-pickens; there were three only options: cheese, pepperoni and something with pork, called the Yeti. I opted for the third option because it was the only non-plain option. I also felt the server was indifferent to my presence. He was aware that I was there simply for a slice of pizza. I did, however, pay to participate in the "challenge". Little did he know I had driven out of my way on my way home from work to pick up a piece quickly so I could get home to my new foster puppy. Went here with a group of about 25 activists after a demonstration at nearby Waterfire festival. I hadn't been to Providence in nearly 30 years, but a local in our group told us about a place that serves vegan food, so we all went to Pizza J. It's part bar, part arcade, part pizza place...which is pretty cool. I want to start by saying that the pizza was FREAKIN' DELICIOUS! Like, wow! The three of us that rode up together split a vegan ricotta, basil, garlic, roasted red pepper pizza. I give the pizza itself five stars. So good! Wow! I was set to order an appetizer of seitan wings, when the waiter told us that the seitan wings are fried in the same oil as the chicken. Yet the menu says they are vegan. So the ignorance and/or deception kinda sucks. Then I asked him specifically about what is fried in the same oil as dead chicken and he replied "anything fried." So apparently much of the "vegan" offerings at Pizza J are not vegan at all. Even the French fries are not vegan. We were lucky he informed us of this, but I wonder...do they normally tell people that ahead of time? I asked him "Do you normally tell people that ahead of time?" and his response was somewhat vague, indicating that yes, he told everyone in our group tonight. I didn't press the issue because he was super cool. It baffles me how many places are woefully ignorant. If you fry "vegan" food in the same oil as dead animals it is not vegan food! Ugh. I want to give them two stars but the pizza was too damn good. Is it okay to spit into the fry oil? At 350 degrees or whatever it is, it'll kill any germs, so it's really just a mental thing. If it's okay to fry "vegan" food in the same oil as dead animals, surely spitting into the fry oil is totally kewl, too, right? Blows my mind. I was the manager of a hamburger/hotdog place in VT before I went veg years ago and we had a veggie burger that NEVER touched any surface dead animals had touched, and we fried nothing in the oil but potatoes. Actual vegan French fries. This is (or should be) common sense and standard practice for any place offering vegan food. Very basic stuff here and places that are so woefully ignorant of what offering vegan food entails need to step up. Pizza is in the name, but the only highlight of the menu is their ice cream sandwich. I've been to Pizza J four times and I really want to like the place but the taste just isn't there. I've had their pizza (of course), tacos, chicken wings, garlic fries, and dessert; however, nothing has caught my tastebuds except their ice cream sandwich which is phenomenal. Issue I like everything about this place except one important factor, the pizza dough itself is off. Pizza J, a cool hip spot with a completely open kitchen and pizza oven. They have several craft beers on tap and tout all natural ingredients. Service was very attentive and friendly and we saw a couple of people that we hadn't seen in a while so we felt at home. Our order: Smoked Wings - delicious House Salad - big portion, great house dressing Simple Pepperoni Pizza - Weak The bartender brings out this square pizza and from first site it looked great. The problem was that the pizza had terrible dough. Very chewy and almost undercooked texture. We ordered our pie well done so we tried to avoid it. I guess I expect a thin crust pizza to have a crispy crust and this pizza didn't have that. Tip: App specials everyday till 6. Great classic movies on the TV's. It pains me to give only three stars, but for my own integrity, I unfortunately must. I will start with what I really like. First of all, the people are great. As soon as I walked in, I dove right into a conversation about holey (as in, they have holes) rain boots with the GM, our waiter was super friendly and I could tell he was willing to go that extra mile, and everyone I encountered was helpful and willing to answer questions. Secondly, the pizza is good. I dig the big square and the square slices, and the crust is perfect (thin and with good flavor, like true Italian crust but less soggy), and I like the fact they can accommodate GF and vegan diets. Thirdly, their dedication to local artists is present, just like at Julian's. They have artists' work on display on rotation, and I think doing so is an awesome way to support the community--and it's great to see what people are doing! Plus, a lot of work went into putting the restaurant together; for example, the tables are made from repurposed wood found in the building and in the neighborhood. The downsides: It feels like a warehouse. I love the cozy intimacy of Julian's, and that's missing from Pizza J. The food, while good, is not particularly standout. There are only six pizzas to choose from- (and yet I still couldn't decide), but I just wasn't blown away. The apps are on the fried side, although the Italian eggroll is unique and very delicious! Cider isn't on the drink menu, which is a bummer for non-beer fans, and the house wines are ...okay. And lastly, there were some issues with our order (we ordered a Tony Clifton with meatballs added, but the meatballs weren't added), which happens sometimes--I don't judge--but my friends went there and also were given the wrong order. Our waiter was great and brought us a whole new pizza (it really wasn't necessary!), but I know my friends never did get what they ordered..or even an apology. In the end, I have no complaints, and I'm sure I'll be back to this new West Side hang out. But to expect Pizza J to do for pizza what Julian's does for Brunch may set up a false analogy. read more

Eat with caution. Got a cheese pizza. It was dried, charred, hard, and brittle. It's the kind of pizza that will cut up your mouth like you are chewing on broken glass. My mouth still hurts days later. Additionally, the pizza is ridiculously greasy. We're talking pools of grease. We're talking this pizza couldn't possibly hold anymore grease. Wear a bib, or be extra careful not to ruin your clothes. There's no need for this much grease. This was a blessing in disguise. Such a cool, fun, lively vibe here. And delish food to match. Went here last week and made the most of the Tuesday Chicken Wing special (sorry, chickens). I highly recommend the Whiskey-Cola sauce, as I found the Hot sauce to be super hiccup-inducingly hot. The Whiskey-Cola sauce is yummm ...three m's intentional, that's yummy. I also enjoyed the Vegan Banh Mi (sorry, mushrooms). It was scrumptious and satisfying, served on a perfect roll. And filling. I took half the sandwich to go. Arrived tonight to a full house! We had no idea that trivia night brought such a crowd nor did we know that trivia night was happening. We quickly realized that a table for 4 would take quite a while since these people had nowhere to go any time shortly! We decided to sit outside, yes, sit outside in November! We got 3 pizzas tonight, I can speak for two of them... They were delicious! The first one Rita the queen: Fresh Mozz, Basil, Garlic, Red Sauce, Cheese Absolutely delicious. So simple yet so perfect! The second one was the Peter Midnight: Braised Short Rib, Mushroom, Caramelized Onion, Cheddar, Mozz, & Blue Cheese. so different than the first one but it's November, it's Fall, that calls for short rib EVERYTHING! The third pizza was vegan. So, I wish I had more info for you other than I heard they can basically make any pizza vegan and I also was told it was very good. I must say, it looked great! We also split the hummus plate and the garlic fries! White Bean Hummus and House Flatbread Sliced Tomato, English Cucumber, Chili Infused Oil Garlic Fries Fresh Garlic, Parsley, Crushed Black Pepper, Roasted Garlic Aioli I would get both again! Stopped in for #besttacosri as part of RI Food Fights. They offered a couple of choices (BLT and Fried Cauliflower). I went with the BLT because, why else, it was Bacon. I think the concept was good, flour tortillas with melted cheese in between, but the execution was off. First there were only about 6 of us in the restaurant at that time and it took nearly 25 minutes to get our tacos. I think the cheese cooled which mage the tortillas chewy, like chewy to the point my jaw hurt. The staff was excellent and I will take into account that it was a Pizza place that I got a taco at and will likely give them another try. read more

If you are vegan they serve the best. They even have "ricotta" and "sausage" as a topping. I even added pineapple to it. Perfect sauce to crust ratio. I feel I have a safe haven for food now. Vegan food in Providence! I've only been here once. They have pretty decent vegan options and knowledge staff. The menu is straightforward but it's always worth asking what can be made vegan. I ordered the garlic knot fries and the vegan bahn mi. The fries were modified to be made vegan. My order came out pretty quick. They have lots of seating including some seats outside. I've ordered from Pizza J a few times and so far, so good. Tonight we had the "Rita, the Queen Pizza" which has fresh mozz, basil, garlic and red sauce. It's delicious. The ingredients were very fresh and the crust was awesome. We also had an order of buffalo wings. They were a good size, smoked, and overall pretty flavorful. We ordered online and pre-paid, so when I picked up it was ready and the staff brought it right outside to me. They have off street parking too, so it was quick, easy and very convenient for take out. I've never had these, but supposedly the vegan and gluten free pizza options are very popular. Pizza was paper thin. Ripped in half as you tried to pull it away from pie. Obviously they didn't cut it enough. Sauce was a bit sweet as if they put sugar in it to reduce acid. Pizza was a little doughy for a thin crust. Maybe it wasn't cooked enough. To much hurbs on pizza. Atmosphere was cool but the place was cold. Soda was way overpriced and no refills. Got the King Tidal Wave (Smokey Tasso Ham, Roasted Pineapple, Scallions, Mozzarella, Red Sauce) which is their take on a Hawaiian pizza. I love the thin crust, but I thought the amount of toppings were a bit scant. And the pineapple is shaved really thin. Guess that makes sense on a thin crust pizza. The crust was so thin, though, it couldn't really stand up on its own. I kinda like a slice that remains flat or has the option to "stick out" with a little fold when you bring it from the box/plate to your mouth. But the flavor was spot on, just enough salt, not too sweet a sauce, and perfect real cheese, not that fake nonsense at low rent pizza slingers. So 5 stars for taste, 3 stars for lack of a crunchy-stands-up-on-its-own crust. Will I order from here again? Absolutely. read more

My friend and I came here for lunch because we had seen on their online menu that they have some vegan options!! When we walked in, the atmosphere was so cool and retro-like. We told the guy at the counter that we were there for their vegan options, and he pointed out all of the vegan options on the menu, which was very nice. We ordered their fries, their hot seitan wings, and "The Audrey" pizza but with vegan mozzarella and vegan ricotta instead of regular cheese and it was DELICIOUS. The crust was so crispy, and it was not greasy at all. The vegan wings came with a chipotle dipping sauce and they were both outstanding, along with the fries. The pizza is quite delicious, and the experience of eating there is fun but the sheer number of times my orders have been wrong is staggering, particularly for how spendy the pizzas are. I have to check my take away orders because 2/3 of the time something has been wrong and too many times I've driven home with mistakes. The epitome of this is when the pizza maker caught a mistake before giving me my order then remade the pizza only for it to be woefully wrong the second time.They do make amends by remaking pizzas or refunding but it honestly should not be this difficult. read more

I come to Pizza J with coworkers mostly because it's close and opens a little more quickly than the place down the street. They do half off appetizers from 4-6, their beer selection is on point, and the bartenders are genial even when you're half-dead from a work day. Still, Pizza J is missing something. First off, if you come, come for the pizza. Go with the simple options and you'll be happy- less is definitely more here. The fries and the rest of the appetizers are a little heavy on the salt, which is great if you want to down six glasses of water and two more beers than you initially expected, but not so great if you're thinking about driving home. Pizza J works as both a bar and a family pizza restaurant but lacks the warmth of either... this isn't a place you really want to hang out once you've finished eating. Here's hoping they hit their stride with ambience/friendliness and get a few more pairs of shoes in the door. read more

I have absolutely no idea where the negative reviews for Pizza J are coming from. My fiance and I are huge fans and keep this spot in regular rotation when it comes to eating out (same thing for its sister restaurant, Julian's). It's not New York pizza, it's not Sicilian pizza, it's Pizza J. And Pizza J is creative, delicious, and willing to take risks which I like in a pizza. My hands down favorite is the King Tidal Wave. It's their take on a Hawaiian pizza and one that my fiance actually appreciates. #1 REAL grilled pineapple, none of this canned BS. #2 The ham, man. That tasso ham is out of control amazing. Now, we've had other menu items before but that Tidal Wave and the really friendly service as well as solid drink list keeps us coming back. I will say that the other pizzas we've tried (the Beautiful Yeti and Lovely Rita are also top contenders) are all consistently delicious. We also love to sit at their beautiful bar, half for the service and half for the direct line of vision we have into their open kitchen. It's such a tease to watch the process and the level of giddiness I get to when I see our order in process and finally on its way to our seats is embarrassing but not enough so that I wouldn't reveal my dorky ways in a Yelp review. read more

Came with my family (7 people total) around 4pm on a Saturday. About 2 other tables in there and yet the service was rather slow. We ordered the Italian egg roll and garlic knot French fries for an appetizer. Everyone enjoyed the fries but there were mixed reviews on the egg roll. It sounded yummy on the menu but the taste was odd and left me feeling sick to my stomach. Tasted like raw meat and cheese (my sister agreed) but others loved it so it was probably just polarizing. Unfortunately for me, my stomach didn't settle all night. Pizza: it's good. Not the greatest I've ever had but I enjoyed it. It's a bit on the small & thin side so be sure to order a pizza with lots of toppings if you're hungry. Slightly greasy with minimal cheese & sauce and yummy crust. The pizza is amazing! The crusts are excellent, both the regular and the gluten-free ones- they are both PIZZA! We also tried the brussels sprouts which were great, and the garlic fries, which were very good but maybe had a bit too much (delicious!) stuff on them- I liked the plain fries better.
