I'm writing this from a vegan's perspective. A vegan who dearly misses cheese. Most vegan cheese have a strange texture, taste off, or are just not quite the same as the real thing despite being good. Well Pizza J must have hired magicians or mad scientists because not only was their vegan cheese just as good as the real thing, I can confidently say that their pizza was the best I've ever had; real cheese or not. I ordered a pizza with a BBQ base, onion, jalapeno, pineapple, and seitan. I ate ALL of it including the crust with some extra BBQ sauce for dipping. I'm having a mouthgasm just thinking about it now. This pizza will be in my dreams. I will pawn off my belongings for this pizza. PIZZA! Also a great selection on tap. Sometimes my boyfriend will just drive past Pizza J's cause he knows that will be enough to get it on the menu for dinner. I will preface this by saying, I'm not a big fan of red sauce, so the sheer amount of white pizzas on the Pizza J menu is enough to get 5+ stars from me. There were flies flying all over the restaurant. The garlic fries were great. We tried the pretzel. Everyone took one bite and left it. We ordered a pineapple lemonade and a regular, "made homemade". They both tasted exactly the same, like slightly lemony water. My son ordered pizza with chicken on it. The chicken tasted reheated. The other pizza was pepperoni. The sauce was mediocre and the pepperoni was thin and barely had any flavor. My son's friend got a soda and his cup was cracked down the side, so it leaked out all over him and the table, so much so that he had to change seats. This is another stop I make any time I'm in Rhode Island. But this recent trip was the first time I dined in. I stopped by this past Saturday, and grabbed an in-house drink from the bartender. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the cocktail, it had a pinkish color to it, delicious taste & had that kick I was hoping for. The whole staff is chill and on top of their game. My server Mike, was dope and had a great personality! I ordered the fried mozzarella then the Tony Clifton. The mozzarella was on point! This place has blossomed into a serious sleeper choice for smoked wings and crisp thin crust pie. The "smoking with boots on" pizza, has thinly sliced potatoes, smoked mozzarella, and the most indulgently sweet/smoky tomato jam, topped with chunks of toasted panchetta and 4 over easy eggs. The smoked hot wings are sauced with an Indian chili sauce and cannot be improved upon. All that and the place is dead for lunch on weekends so our insane daughter isn't bothering any one while watching obscure cartoons on their bar TVs. Great beer selection too. An important preface: first, if you're clearly wrong about something, don't try to defend yourself. It only magnifies the problem. And second, if you work at a restaurant that serves vegan food, you are obliged to know what 'vegan' means. My wife and I are beyond upset right now. Words can't properly explain our anger, but I'll try. I wanted to order a pizza for dinner, so I called ahead earlier in the day to ensure I could order what I wanted vegan. In particular, I was looking at the menu on Grub Hub, but didn't see an option or box to check for "vegan." When I called, the hostess answered and explained that yes, I can order anything from that menu and they can make it vegan. I was pretty excited and mentioned that I was going to call back later for a pick up and wanted everything vegan. She then told me she was going to be there all day, and that if I gave her my name she's ensure everything was vegan. I gave her my name. I called back a few hours later to place the order. She picked up. I again asked if the garlic fries could be made vegan (they had an aoli), and if the pizza I wanted could be made vegan. She, again, assured me they could. I ordered both. When I got home and opened the pizza, my wife and I were immediately suspicious of the fake pepperoni. It looked, smelled, and, I hate to say, tasted just like pepperoni. I say this with regret because I've been a vegetarian for most of my adult life and a dedicated vegan for about two years. Same with my wife. If you haven't figured it out by now, the pepperoni was real. We called back to ask what they used as a vegan pepperoni replacement, assuming it was possible they actually made a killer replacement in-house or found a remarkably passable facsimile at Whole Food. The same girls answered and told us that "when someone orders a pizza vegan" that they "only mean they want the cheese vegan." I can't even begin to go into how completely and totally fucking wrong this statement is. Regardless on whether you agree with the values and sentiments of a plant-based diet, I think it's fair to argue that people have a right to know what's in their food and that those ingredients correspond to their beliefs. I'm an ethical, not a nutritional, vegan. If it was a matter of nutrition, I could simply dismiss the less-than-optimal nutritional profile of a few pieces of meat; however, I believe that, essentially, killing animals is wrong. So the scale of this problem is considerably more significant. I've given business to Julian's, and more recently Pizza J, since 2008. No more, and never again. And I even tipped them. I give this place 5 stars off service alone! Mike was our waiter and he's hands down the best waiter I've ever had. He was accommodating and had a way of making you feel like you're friends lol. Now on to the food... we had the garlic fries, thai chili wings, and a pepperoni pizza. Everything was delicious! The fries were perfectly seasoned and topped off with a delicious garlic sauce. The wings had a bit more than a kick but were so good I had to keep eating them. The pizza was also great. The pepperoni was thick and the cheese/sauce ratio was perfect! Pretty good pizza if you like thin pizza. Ours was overdone on the bottom which isn't a big deal. A bit pricey for what you get but the ambiance of the place is pretty cool plus you can grab a craft beer to go if you want. Main issue i had was actually that they turn the pizza box inside out and dont put down any kraft paper or anything so your slice absorbs all the dioxin and inks from the pizza box in an effort to be different and cool. You know what's cool Pizza J? Not getting cancer. Not getting cancer is cool. So turn the box right side in. Or buy different boxes. Or put a pece of deli paper under the pie. My girlfriend and I came here on a Wednesday night. Turns out Wednesday is trivia night. It gets pretty loud in there. There isn't really a spot to sit where it's quiet enough that you don't have to yell across the table. On the plus side, the trivia seemed like a lot of fun. They even have questions to get a free beer. I had The Angelo, which is two meatballs with fries. Everything was delicious. I also had the Italian grinder. My only complaint is there was just too much bread. It's pretty dim in there, but the atmosphere is nice. read more

Pizza J does a good job straddling the different pizza joint competition in PVD and sells classic pizza combos with a twist. For example, their cheese pizza is the American Beauty (classic red sauce, cheese, herbs), the pepperoni is the Bold & the Beautiful (described as American Beauty with pepperoni) and my personal pick so far is the delicious Pale Moon Rider (white pizza with shaved steak, mushroom, ricotta). It's pizza that's tastier than the standard pizza parlors, but is careful to not scare the neighbors off either (despite their "Boo" sign). To be honest, I was really hoping for a hipster pizza joint similar to the best slice of pizza I ever had in life (the incredible shuttered Great Lake in Chicago) or at least something like Roberta's in Brooklyn that has delicious artisan pizza with an add-on ingredient menu so you can customize your pie. While Pizza J has recently expanded their pizza menu, the pizza crust quality has been inconsistent. Sometimes it's really good, other times... Not so much. Pizza J is still brand spanking new, so I'm crossing my fingers that they'll be consistently good in the near future. Just a note for the food allergy/picky people: gluten free crust and vegan cheese is available. Otherwise, the remainder of the menu is packed with a ton of non-pizza items like different appetizers and grinders. The bar matches the menu (there's a mix like Bud Light, craft beers, some nice Belgians, red/white wine, etc) and the service is nice but sometimes... painfully.... slow. The space itself is open, airy, with plentiful seating. Lots of local art and they didn't skimp on the fixtures while keeping some elements to maintain the pizza parlor vibe (like the plastic red cups). Welcome to the neighborhood Pizza J! I really wanted to like this place, but, like its sister restaurant, the food just ain't great. Their beer selection is really good and there's always plenty of open seats, which by the way, for a Friday night is probably not a good sign. It's called "PIZZA J", but their specialty is just underwhelming. They should really work on making a great pizza first and then focus on other items. Should be renamed Pizza S for Pizza Slow! It seems in many reviews people are saying it took 1-2 hours to get a pizza. So I went in early before the rush and ordered a pizza at 5:30pm. Only a few other people in there. The pizza arrived at 6:20pm. Unacceptable. Go to Flatbread or Nice Slice and avoid waiting. Pizza itself was okay. I've had better pizzas from a sub shop though. There's also a bit of scattered-ness happening with people not knowing certain things, just not well put together overall. Unlikely to return with better options in PVD. read more

We stopped in last night to check out the new gluten free crust recipe. I really like it much better now- The corners/ends of the pizza are now flakey/ crisp- Instead of burnt. We got the lovely rita with vegan cheese/ added olives and it was perfect. The cheese was creamy- the entire thing was great. We also ordered the french fries which are always good, my boyfriend had the seitan strips and a vegan sandwich too. The server we had was named Luis (I think) he was super attentive, professional, knowledgable. (The best server we have had since going to the restaurant) I'm only giving four stars because I wish there were more vegan/ gluten free options. It would be awesome to even have gf/ vegan bread sticks or make the fried eggplant sandwich without the egg wash or even serve the hummus with tortilla or even guac and tortilla/salsa. We went here for a beer and a slice. The slice was large and the equivalent of two slices in an eight-piece pie. The pizza was thin and dark on the bottom and tasted like a classic NY pizza. However, the price of a full pizza seemed a bit overpriced. We liked the variety of beers on tap. Although neither beer that we had was a favorite, it's clear that they rotate beers and try to offer a solid variety of craft brews. I can't wait to return!! Came here with the food fights wing coupon, got the Thai chili and Green curry-peanut-cilantro wings. They were both phenomenal! The craft beer selection is stellar, the atmosphere is fun and hip but low key so you don't have to worry about your dress code. The pizza looked and smelled amazing which is one reason I need to come back. The bar is large, bartender was super friendly and knew everything about the beers. There was another server that came over to chat about the beers and he seemed very passionate about it as well. We loved the pizza, the dough and the crust. We got the Yeti and it was great. Before that we started with the Thai chili wings which were also very good. The place itself was cool, funky and eclectic. Local artwork on the walls. Service was great. Not just a 'pizza joint' (but to be fair, menu was mostly pizza and various sandwiches). Full bar. So, two things here. The first is what I'm really basing my review on. First, honestly the pizza's just not great. There's better and very nearby. Atmosphere is good and it's not disgusting, but I won't go back to visit after my first couple of tries. Second, and this won't generally apply: I have celiac, and for a place with GF crust on the menu they're really not very good at handling the restriction. Turns out that half the pizzas have toppings with gluten, but the servers don't have any understanding of that. They do check with the kitchen staff, so you'll *probably* be fine if you order something and it turns out not to be okay, but my first handful of orders the first time came back as no goes, and the second time the server also didn't know any of this and I had to instruct him myself. This doesn't apply to the general public but if you do have to avoid gluten there are way, way better places in town to go. read more

Stopped by on my way home after work after ordering through Grub Hub for seitan wings w Cola BBQ sauce. They're so yummy, best I've ever tasted. They' re perfectly cooked and the texture is excellent. The Cola BBQ sauce is really delicious too. The order came with a vegan Aioli sauce and celery. The portion is large and well packaged. I'll definitely be ordering them sgain. The used to have a vegan Bahn mi sandwich but it's not on the current/seasonal menu. Hope it comes back soon. Unfortunately , the Grub Hub menu doesn't include all of the regular menu items. Grub Hub needs to update it. The bartender that handled my order was really nice and accommodating. The place has a fun vibe and good music too. Fun place to come with friends for a night out. Lot's of of arcade games to play if you're into that. Very clean inside. I'll definitely be back. Returned last night after three years of avoiding this place. The atmosphere was welcoming with lots to see (including the Muppets on tv) and great music from the 80's. Wait staff were welcoming, genuine, pleasant and very apologetic when the appetizer of broiled Brussel Sprouts with apple cider vinegar & bacon came out after our pepperoni pizza. The drinks were delicious, the Brussel Sprouts were delicious and the pizza was delicious. No complaints!! Although my first review from three years ago said to avoid this place, I have changed my mind and will definitely go back; soon. I went there once and had a terrible experience and walked out. They were out of everything that I asked for on the menu. They told me that the wings were made of tofu and not seitan like it says on the menu. The server didn't even seem to be concerned that the menu was deceptive about the contents of the food. I really wanted to like Pizza J's more than I did. The space is a cool conversion of an abandoned garage-like building. Decor is funky, as you might expect from a Julian's sister restaurant. I liked the long bench around the wall & the lacquered pallet tables. However, it's so dark in the dining room that the menu is tough to read. And the movie that was playing flickered constantly making it feel like a strobe light. We ordered the meat calzone egg rolls. The dipping sauce was quite tasty. The egg rolls themselves were okay - nothing amazing, but a decent vessel for the fillings. Then we shared a margarita pie, which was the special. The crust is good and I like the charring from the oven. However, the toppings were scarce (very tiny dots of cheese and cherry tomatoes chopped small) and the pizza didn't arrive hot. It's still a new spot & I trust things need time to work out any kinks. I'll give it another try in a month or two and see. Julian's has always been a solid spot. Hope Pizza J's will become that too. read more

Finally made my way back in to try the pizza and the dine-in experience. Happy to say that they really hit the mark! Inside is nice and open, a far cry from the close quarters you find in Julian's proper. Service is quick, helpful, and attentive too! For drinks, they've got a bunch of rotating craft beers (and cider) on tap, as well as mixed drinks. I noticed that the beers aren't *quite* as extensive or exotic as the beers at Julian's. Then again, it's a pizza place, you don't have time to appreciate a complex beer while you're shoving pizza into your gullet. There's also red hard plastic cups for water in true pizza parlor fashion. For food, we got the tempura vegetable plate which included tempura mushrooms, cauliflower, zucchini, and onions served with a spicy soy-based sauce (Vader sauce). It was well-executed. It was a strange, but tasty start to pizza dinner. After that, we got a pizza that was 1/2 American Beauty (just cheese+sauce), and 1/2 Tony Clifton ( ricotta, potato, onion, roasted red pepper). We really enjoyed the cheese, but felt like the Tony Clifton needed some more flavors (truffle oil might do wonders, or just some more herbs). All in all, I'm glad I went back! Given how close it is to my apartment, it's sure to be a go-to for me. Chicken parm sandwich still needs more sauce, though (convince me otherwise!). read more
