I've only had the gyro plate (gyro meat with choice of sides) and I thought the gyro meat was some of the best I've ever had. This place probably only deserves three stars, but I feel like I should give them a bump for doing Mediterranean food in CR. The reason I am wavering is because the last time I ate there they ran out of rice, which was really annoying, especially since I had invited a guest to lunch with me and this place was my choice. Rice is as much of a staple for that kind of food as it is for Chinese food, so imagine if your local Chinese told you they were out of rice. I'd go again. I had the gyro which was good. It took a bit longer than I expected so I'll be sure to allow more time next time. We were on our way to a movie and had expected this to be more of a quick bite but it wasn't quite that. There were several items on the menu that I'd want to try. The pita they used was more like a naan type of bread. I liked it quite a bit but on a gyro I might've preferred something thicker and softer. The more I eat here, the more I like it. I'm bumping them up a star. I've had several sandwiches now and so far the Shish Tawook and Chicken Gyro are my favorites. The Shish Tawook can be very messy with the lemon/oil/garlic marinade dripping out. I order it spicy ( w/ Frank's red hot sauce) and ask for the fries on the side rather than in the sandwich as it usually comes. I just don't like my fries soggy. The sandwiches (and most other menu items come in two sizes, large ($6.50) and small ($4.99). The large is big enough for two people. If you share, it's actually a pretty good value. The hummus is pretty good but I don't care for their falafel, it's just too plain and dry. The fries are good, just $1.95 for a generous size order. Free Wi-Fi from the coffee shop next door. I plan to try the salads sometime, the Greek salad sounds good. read more

If you're fan of Mediterranean food you'll like Pitaz. I got the large Mediterranean salad and added gyro. It was huge, which is a big deal for someone with an insatiable appetite like me. We have been there a few times, and the other experiences were more positive. We visited on Saturday and both ordered the large Greek Salad for take out. When we arrived home, we found the food to be almost inedible, as both salads were swimming in liquid (it did not appear to be dressing, as there was not much taste to it. We both finished less than 25% of it and tossed it. Unfortunately, you were closed for the day by the time we ate, or we might have driven the 30 minutes back to your location. This is really a good choice for a delicious Mediterranean meal in Cedar Rapids! We ordered an appetizer of pitas and hummus....smooth and creamy and topped with olive oil. I had the chicken schwarma with rice, my family had the beef Kofta and a pita wrap. All were sooooooo tasty, well seasoned and fresh. The side salads were crisp and perfectly dressed with a garlic, olive oil and red wine vinegrette. It was about $30 in all and we left with portions to take home. The staff was so friendly. The thing about this place is the food isn't bad. It's nothing to go nuts about, but for what it is, it's not bad and I would have got with 3 stars. What brings it down a star is the way they deal with coupons/promotions. I don't mind that they follow the fine print, but they are just flat out rude when telling you the orders that don't match the discounts. I had a buy a sandwich and a drink and get a sandwich free and thought I could just get the combo and receive the free sandwich. Next thing I know, I was charged the sandwich and fries individually to raise the price; without telling me she rang it up that way. I didn't figure it out until after I paid. Proper service should have been "sorry, you can't do that with a combo but I can do [...] instead." Either way, that left a poor taste in my mouth and started going there more sparingly now. read more

I've been coming to this spot for years and am ashamed that I've never taken the time to write a review. Maybe it's because I fail to venture far from my favorites on the menu. On my first visit, I had the typical gyro and a side of hummus (good but not earth shattering). Then the following visit I tried the chicken shwarma...and never turned back. It only took me a couple of bites to get over the fact that they put french fries and pickle on their wrap. (Yes, I said FRENCH FRIES!) At first glance, I thought "Sheer blasphemy! Americanized Mediterranean food! How can this be good?" Well Americanized or not, it's Delicious!! My usual is the small chicken shwarma platter with a Mediterranean salad in the side. The salad (Romain with tomatoes, red onion, cucumber and vinaigrette was simple but extreemly fresh and the perfect accompaniment. They also have a frequent dinners program utilizing "Belly". I've been there several times, but what I recently found that I REALLY liked is the double gyro cheeseburger. It has two beef patties (ostensibly a quarter pound each, of the smaller, thicker variety - I think they are frozen rather than fresh, but still tasty and juicy) and a similar amount (maybe slightly less) of gyro meat on top of each one, and each layer has a slice of American cheese. Not for the faint of heart, but REALLY tasty - the roasted, slightly spicy flavor of the gyro really adds to the more basic burger flavor, yielding a sandwich that is quite tasty and satisfying. Of course they have a wide variety of menu items (many of which are far healthier than this one), and certainly aren't anyone's idea of a "greasy spoon", but the double gyro burger makes this a place I can go when I'm legitimately hungry and in a carnivorous mood, but still want something a little out of the ordinary. read more

We just tried this place last week. I prefer the thinner pita that they offer on their gyro, especially since the meat and tomatoes inside the gyro are generous. I'd rather pay for gyro meat than pita bread. We found the prices very reasonable for what you get. We were pleased as this will be a nice option for a quick meal and something different than the humdrum chain offerings that are so prominent here. Overall, I found the gyro slightly better than Aladdin's, but both are good. Aladdin's is clear on the other side of CR so this is a good local option. read more

Pita'z is definitely in my Top 5 favorite restaurants in the greater CR area. My fiancé and I get takeout from them about 2-3 times per month, and it's just delicious every time. The portions are very generous, and I can usually stretch one meal into two. :-) If you haven't been "there" in a long time, try "them" again. Here's the reason for the quote marks: I've found a lot of people think Pita'z is the same as its predecessor in the same spot, La Ziz. Both had Lebanese food, but they're not the same restaurant! Pita'z is much better. I say that with love to the lovely owners of La Ziz, with whose family I'm acquainted. (Sorry, guys!) Tip 1) The chicken shwarma is amazing, yes, but try the shish tawook. Yummmmm! Tip 2) If you're a garlic fan, ask for a side of the garlic sauce. It's delicious, and added bonus - you'll keep the vampires away for at least a full 24 hours! Tip 3) Their baba ganoush is soooo good. It's very smoky, so if you don't like smoky flavor, you won't like it. I think it's the best in eastern Iowa. read more
