Pardon my gyro breath, I just finished another great gyro combo with everything. Since I've been on a quest lately for the the best gyrating meat sandwich, I needed to get another fix...and I'm glad I did. Gyro Hut easily wins the "Best Value" value award in the Corridor area. They really pack their soft pitas with long, thick juicy strips of Gyro meat and the perfect balance of onion, tomato, very little lettuce, tzatziki sauce and upon request hot peppers (bonus!). Still just $5.99 for the combo which includes fries and a can of pop. The fries are the ordinary frozen kind (The Flying Wienie is still the fresh cut fries champion). It's the generous and yummy gyro that makes this the best value. They use Kronos brand gyro meat cooked on a spit or "cone". Better hold on to your wienies Cedar Rapids because Gryro Hut now has a Chicago style Polish sausage - just $3.99 for the combo meal! (See pic). I gotta try that on my next visit. What gets Gyro Hut the coveted 5th star is the local owner seems to really support the neighborhood. Much of their clientele is walk-in traffic from the surrounding area. He seems to genuinely care about his customers and is a positive influence in this inner city area. OK, Gyros Hut is not much of a place. Take-out only, no seating (except to wait for your order), and not a place you would want to hang out around anyway. If the surrounding environs make you nervous, order in advance instead of waiting, and pick your food up. So check out the menu, You will find an amazing selection of well prepared foods you will not find anywhere else in Cedar Rapids. The menu selections range from fried catfish, shrimp and perch, fried chicken, sausages, burgers, and, of course, gyros. Preparation takes time here but the wait is worth it. The gyros is the best gyros I have had in many many years and my tasting experience goes way back to the original gyros made in Chicago on vertical broilers in the 1970's as well as gyros made by street vendors in the Middle East. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that a significant number of the folks hanging out here have some sort of active warrants. *IF* you can get past that (and some folks certainly will not), you will be rewarded with an amazing gyro probably the best I've ever had. Incredibly generous portion of lamb on a nice fresh pita for a reasonable price. The gyro is so good that I have never been even tempted to try any other dishes. The fries are also quite good. Note that I'd have easily given this place a 5th star for the food but the rough ambience of the place is rather pervasive. That being said, I can endure quite a bit for truly excellent chow. City style gyro joint on the corner. I love gyros and this did not disappoint. Yummy heaps of meat, lettuce shreds, onion, tomato and jalapeño slathered with "gyro sauce," stuff inside a quality pita. This is not a bistro, boutique gyro with chunky homemade tzatziki and feta, but what I would consider pop-in, grab a gyro on your way to the subway style: quick, hot and delicious. I hope the family can expand their operations and stick a table and some chairs inside. There is no place to sit, so everything is to-go, but that's ok. Their website pricing, YELP pictures of menu and what's presented on their board are all different, so add a $1 or $2 to what is online. Amazing food every time! The environment isn't sketchy to me, I just sit in my car to wait for my food. The young man working even brought my food out to my car! I usually get the gyro or fish, but everything is good, hot, and fast. They even deliver through a delivery service, just ask about it! I was in Cedar Rapids for work and love to find new places to eat. This was the first time I ventured to the Gyro Hut. I thought the gentleman that took my order was very accommodating and very nice. I asked for the gyro meat, lettuce, and onion only. I even asked him to double the meat and they didn't event bat an eye. The food was prepared quickly and the woman delivered it to me with a smile. I used to eat here all the time and I would still love to! All of a sudden they don't want to do pick up order anymore (carry out) even when I offer to give them my card # over the phone, which I have done before. Regardless if I didn't pick up the food, they would still get there money. Now they're doing "walk ins only" so I walked in and placed my order, went back out to my car and waited and while they gave my food away to someone else... so I had to sit for another 20 minutes for them to remake it... this could of all been avoided by doing carry out in the first place. As I walked into the gyro hut my senses began to tingle. However it was not just my sense of smell from the aroma of fresh gyros being made, but also my sense of sight, as I witnessed the true sketchy ness of the 319. Many people entered the small building just for the convenience of the facilities (i.e latrines) Kids are recommended under the supervision of adults, as the dress code was mainly pants on the ground, and patrons get to know Hanes and Fruit of the Loom quite well. The food was top notch and reminded me of my days in the Mediterranean eating gyros without a care in the world..those were easier times. Yelp definitely led us astray on this one. The lamb isn't particularly well seasoned and the sauce is a bland, runny sauce that tastes more like mayo than greek yogurt. I suddenly understood why they asked if we wanted jalepinos on ours - it needs flavor from somewhere! Portion size was definitely big enough to satisfy anyone's appetite.
