Spending three months backpacking Europe really turned me on to gyros, but they also were so much better than the typical American gyro, that they kind of ruined them for me, if that makes sense. But the Gyro Hut, despite it's extremely sketchy environs, truly delivered. It was definitely one of the best gyros I've had in the U.S. Strongly recommend checking this place out. read more

This place has ruined me for all other gyros. I have not, nor will I ever, have a gyro as great as the ones they make here. The lamb is so tender, it's like biting into air. The yogurt sauce is to die for, and the other toppings just serve as icing on the messy, delicious, meat-filled cake. This place is an absolute must if you're in or driving through Cedar Rapids. I have had dreams of these gyros and woken up almost on the verge of tears since I moved further away from this little place. They have the most AMAZING Tenderloins I have had in this area and I have lived around here all of my life. Yes it's a hole in the wall place in a not too good area of town, but if you go during the day you should be completely fine. I love any Mediterranean food and was super excited to try this place. Unfortunately, it was very disappointing and a waste of money. The owner explained that due to business being slow they had limited menu options, which made me wonder how fresh anything I ordered would be. Feeling brave, I ordered a falafel wrap, which was so unappetizing and expensive that I ended up throwing it out. The falafel was greasy, and poorly warmed through. The toppings were minimal. I could barely pay because the credit card machine wasn't working and the owner didn't tell me upfront. After the second try, my card went through. The value of the mediocre wrap was not worth $13. Would not give this place a second chance. read more

For all the previous posts about in a bad neighborhood: Be real people, this is Cedar Rapids Iowa. Sure it's an industrial neighborhood with a wide variety of races living in the direct area, but to make it sound like you should be afraid of getting out of your car is a HUGE stretch. Try dining on the South Side of Chicago or the West Side of Rockford IL before you get scared away from Gyro Hut. The location is in a very industrial area. The restaurant is a Dive in a repurposed gas station. OK, so it's a dive. That being said, the service was excellent. The food was decent. The prices are fair. We tried the Gyro Combo (gyro, fries, and a can of pop for $6.99) - the fries were hot, the pop was brand name and cold, the gyros were hot and fresh. All very decent dive food. We also ordered some Deep Fried Chicken Gizzards, served with Frank's Hot Sauce. These were hand battered and deepfriend to perfection. It was well worth the trip to the south east neighborhood. By no means did we ever feel uncomfortable about the location or the varied customer base. Worth adding - the photos from previous reviews are now somewhat out of date. The signage inside the restaurant is still the same. The outdoor seating has been upgraded! The board nailed to the railing is gone, in fact the ramp/railing has been rebuilt. There is now a decent 4 seat table on the east side of the building for your outdoor dining experience. read more

This is one of the best places in town... however... it is one of the most grungy places in town. The food is amazing. It is bar food, to go food, and all things deep fat fried. The gyros are top notch. A note of warning is that the gyro comes standard with the usual taziki sauce, tomato, lettuce and onion... but also with jalepenos. I wasn't expecting that on my first time. The gyros are way better than any other place around here. The fries that come with it are normal, friend, frozen deliciousness. The gizzards are pretty good, but not great. I have attempted to sneak off the gyro and to try other things, but the gyro is way too good to get anything else. When you go, be ready for a sketchy ass crowd. Not only can you get the best gyro in town, but I am pretty sure that I could probably get the best ______ (insert your non-food drug of choice here) in town as well. Overall... I love it. Take out only, and they encourage you calling ahead and ordering rather than sitting in their tiny, literal, hut to wait for your food. read more

I'm not even a gyro guy, I just think they're all ALRIGHT.. but the moment I opened up the bag from Gyro Hut I was surprised by the large amout of meat they stuffed in there!! for 4.99, you really can't top this. The best gyro I've ever had, and that thing was LOADED I tell ya! Definitely reccomend it if you're starving and not looking to spend much. HALF of the gyro would be equal to other places' normal size.. soooo goood!!!! read more

I normally love the food we've had delivered. Italian beef with the ad jus and giardiniera is one of the best I've had. Cheddar fries are almost as great as Gold Coast Dogs in Chicago. My son loves the gyros, not my thing, but he orders 2 each time. I ordered the catfish once and am really discerning about Southern Fried catfish. It was excellent and wished I had ordered more. I always tip well, especially for delivery drivers. I gave $7 for a $30 order once and did not realize they charged me $7 for delivery already. The next time I ordered they told me about the $7, I'm only 5 blocks east from them. I asked if that was on top of the tip and they said,"Yes," and went on to tell me they forgot to give my tip to the driver. Then, after they delivered my food the 2nd time, I tipped the driver the same amount. After he left the owner or manager called me to ask if I tipped the driver. I told him that of course I did and why are they accusing me of not tipping when by now I had paid their business over 2 deliveries $28 in delivery fees and tips on $60 worth of food total. This time I had my son pick it up. My daughter and I each took a bite of the catfish and simultaneously spat it out. It was bad, really bad. It had gone south days ago. I'm praying we don't have food poisoning. The fries this time were cold and rubbery. My son had fries in his order and they were entirely diffetent from our order and do not know why.
