Awesome stop in Sonora, and for barbecue. There were all sorts of options. BBQ sandwiches, plates, loaded potatoes, etc. I wanted to try the Guajolote which was a turkey and jalapeno cheese sausage sandwiches, topped with ranch, BBQ sauce, and pico. It was not only filling but good. It's a big sandwich...a whole lotta goodness. We walked in, got in line, ordered and not long after there was our food in front of us. Liz ordered a fantastic Helotes Brisket tacos.she raved about how good it was. The kids enjoyed their pulled pork tacos. I would definitely stop here now that I know it's on my El Paso to SA route. There's is covered benches outside if you prefer the natural Sonoran air. We kept it comfy inside in the diner-esque seating. Pure yumminess.

Great place for a quick lunch on the road. Service was excellent and food comes quickly. The elote tacos tasted fantastic, the brisket was savory and tender and the flavors from the corn and cotija paired nicely. The flour tortillas were kind of boring, would be nicer if they were warm or toasted a bit. The sides are also great- the potato salad is solid and the Cole slaw is super unique with its sweetness from a bit of fruit. Would recommend if you're in the area!

Thank you, Yelp community for letting me find this little gem on my drive from AZ to San Antonio!! It's right off I-10 and perfect for hungry bellies! The service was very welcoming and hospitable. The restaurant has plenty of seating inside and outside. Nicely decorated and clean. Bathrooms are super clean and adequately stocked. I had their pork ribs and brisket and my favorite was the rib! Meat was flavorful and so tender, it just fell off the bone! Brisket was flavorful, too! The potato salad was okay, nothing great in my opinion. Their beans are delicious! They have bits of brisket inside and WOW! I would highly recommend this little "pit stop!" The food service was not long at all, either! We were back on the road in no time at all!

We didn't want to leave Texas without having bbq. Found this little gem and gave it a try. And oh boy. I got the three meat combo and my buddy got the two meat. They both come with two sides. I got the smoked turkey breast, slice brisket and ribs. He got pulled pork and brisket. Everything was smoky and delicious . The turkey was juicy and not dry all (10/10) ribs meat fell off the bone. Brisket was perfect. Beans were good and potato salad was delicious. If I get a chance I will stop back on way home

Found this on yelp as I was traveling through Texas absolutely amazing, great outdoor space for those who have dogs- brisket tacos were fresh- I watched her cut the meat right off the smoker, arrived right at opening. My husband had turkey and sausage sandwich and said it was wonderful- really started to fill up as we were leaving. This is clearly the locals spot!

Pit Stop is a solid spot to get some BBQ if you happen to be traveling through the area. Especially on a Sunday, when there are really limited options. The staff were super warm and welcoming and the food was exactly what I needed as a pit stop on my travels across Texas.

Friendly staff at order window, prices a little high but this is family-owned/run so you're helping them directly. Seats 20 inside and huge long community tables outside. Food: yum! every bite! Medium smoked flavor gives perfect flavor (doesn't need sauce!) to both meats ordered; pit beans are soupy with outstanding flavor; slaw has pineapple that truly compliments horseradish sauce. Only ding is ribs STILL have silver skin (makes'm chewy) but upside is they have little fat, a slightly crispy exterior and flavorful dry rub.

I'm not big on Mexican restaurants because I get home made all the time. This place had some good ratings so I decided to stop by. I asked for marbled brisket and got lean slices with the fat on the edges, needless to say it was super dry. Not much flavor The ribs on the other hand were very tender, great flavor and juicy. Turkey was tender, juicy and had lots of flavor. I ordered a sound to go so that I could chop up the dry brisket and eat it later Small mom and pop shop with about 7 tables. Does have outdoor seating as well

I would give this restaurant a 4.5, but there's not an option for that. So, I am happily rounding up to a 5. Their sliced brisket is probably one of the best I've ever had and my husband agrees. He ordered a pound just so we could continue snacking on our way to Big Bend. I ordered the smoked turkey, potato salad and coleslaw. The sides were SO tasty. I loved the sweet coleslaw! They were so good that I forgot to snap a pic of them. The smoked turkey is the only reason I wouldn't immediately give them a 5. It was moist, but a little too salty for me. It also had an aftertaste that I couldn't identify. Maybe the wood they used? It wasn't bad, just not my favorite. Luckily, my husband shared his brisket!! DEFINITELY worth the stop! We already decided to stop again on our way back to Austin to try the pulled pork (which I originally didn't get because I was trying to be "healthy" and eat less pork). read more

Excellent food. I was expecting some roadside slop but this is as good as any other good bbq spot in Texas. Stop by if you get the chance while driving to El Paso from Austin or back. read more

Where do we begin, there were 4 of us dining so we opted for ala carte to get a bit of everything. Let me tell you, so darn delicious, quick, and the nicest most polite people ever! They had fun with us, the little restaurant is cute, clean, and got busy just after we arrived. The Bbq Brisket was so tender it fell apart picking it up off the serving plateincredible flavor! We also had the hot sausage, bursting with a little fiery madness, also wonderful! For side dishes, you have to have beans & Cole slaw, the beans have pieces of brisket in them seasoning is spot on, not a thing was to SALTY! And the Cole Slawall homemade! Pieces of pineapple in the Coleslaw. Unbelievably delicious! If you got this far, dessert.... Grandmas pecan cobbler is insanely crazy good and NO, not over the top sweet! Ordered 2 piglets to go. When I got home there were 2 little ribs per plate, and maybe 1/2 pound of sausage combined. The people and food were good. When you spend $50 including tip. It's just a huge disappointment. Be more honest on your menu and dost ask for tips. Bad value read more

Walk in on a sunny afternoon, country music bumping, sweet bqq fills my nostrils. Start chatting to the staff and they are friendly as can be and offer great recommendations. They have a great selection of bottled sodas to go along with the most bomb bbq ever. Meat falling of the bone, beans are amazing, sweet corn is amazing. read more

The smoked chicken was good and had get flavor. The beans were good but not what I expected. The nachos were were served room temperature but more on the cold side. Would have enjoyed it more if the meat was actually hot. The portion size was large. The pecan cobbler was delicious and rich. The banana pudding was missing the pudding. We ordered a to-go size. It was mostly whipped cream. It had no bananas or cookies. It was decent but honestly I wouldn't return again. It was not worth $40. read more

'Pit Stop' for this BBQ you must!!! When I tell you it's the best brisket I have ever had, please trust me, it's literally the BEST brisket I've ever had!! The beans are savory and delicious!! Definitely worth the stop!!!! We are traveling on Hwy 10 and stopped in Sonora. Very cute historic town. We drove by Pit Stop BBQ and it smelled so incredibly good we had to stop. We ordered the food to go but the bbq smoker smelled so good we stayed and ate under the covered patio with our dog. The food was excellent!!! I'm pescatarian so I had the loaded baked potato without meat. The potatoes are wrapped in foil and cooked in the smoker. Soooo good! My husband had the sliced brisket and ribs with coleslaw and creamed corn. He loved the BBQ! Very tender and delicious. The coleslaw was perfect, not too sweet and not too much vinegar and definitely homemade. I've never liked creamed corn but this side was delicious. Fresh shucked corn, not that soggy canned corn. Delicious TX barbecue. Brisket was great, potatoes were cooked just right, creamed corn and Oreo dessert were true treats. Four stars because - although the staff were friendly - they forgot several things and initially messed up my order. (I was the only customer in there.) They were super friendly though, so I'm going to go back at some point because the food was great! Mistakes or new staff are not a deal breaker when they are trying their best and the food is good. read more

We stopped in Sonora Tx. for dinner after a 14 hour drive. My wife ordered the chopped brisket with beans and creamed corn for her sides. I ordered the pork ribs with potato salad and creamed corn for my sides. The brisket and were both cooked to perfection. The creamed corn was beyond compare! I've never tasted anything like it. They should be featured on Drive-in's, diners and dives!! I would give them 10 stars if I could. read more

Stopped off of I-10 heading home to central TX (TX bbq country). This place was amazing!!! Best random bbq stop ever... I've had many random regional bbq stop across the state... place is an old gas station... very clean great spot. Had pulled pork taco plate... showed up with slaw piled on top... first reaction was "do I really want it that way??" It was amazing!!!! Slaw had pineapple so it went perfectly with pulled pork. I wish this place was closer to home I'd be here weekly. Super nice staff!! Can't wait for my trip out/back from the oil patch!!! Will be stopping here no doubt... Five stars!? You guys must be joking ! I mean even if there is no food for the next 200 miles I'd rather eat a piece of wood. Brisket taco looked like a diaper. Really bland meat - from the brisket to the ribs. Absolutely scary! Thank god customer service is great , got my money back right away . read more

We were driving across country and wanted true Texas BBQ on New Year's eve. Luckily we found the Pit Stop!!! We got Our food to go. The staff were so friendly, they let us know about the deer on the roads and then gave us a phenomenal meal. This should be a travel stop for anyone traveling in I-10 through Texas!! read more

Delicious!!!! Road trip from East Coast to West Coast with a couple days in Texas! By far the best BBQ yet! I happened to find this little gem on Yelp & boy did it live up to its 5 Star rating! Only one major dissapointment! All the way there I was so looking forward to the "Jackalope" sandwich, only to find out it is only available certain days :( Um...prob. won't be back for a couple years! Oh well.... We had the Bucking Bronco sandwich which was still delicious - no smoked peppers though :( - meat (sausage & pork) very moist! Absolutely loved the cream corn & pineapple coleslaw)! & for u Oreo lovers, the Oreo hog dessert is soooo good!!! Customer Service awesome too ! Very friendly & helpful! Just stopped in Senora on our little road trip home and had a great lunch experience. The young man in the front is an outstanding salesman and had super customer service. The food was Great, Tasty, Delicious and any other word you can fill in. The place was clean and nice with ample seating and the prices were reasonable. We really enjoyed our lunch (brisket potatoe and jalapeño and cheese sausage sandwich). It was memorable and we will be back! PS Loved This Place can't say anything bad and not a paid spokesperson. Ordered extra lean sandwiches with coleslaw and a water. $11:34. First sandwich was chopped, why would I order a chopped extra lean?? Chopped is already made. This is what I received. Bun was so hard, could not eat. I will be taking pit stop off my list.. I didn't not receive a full refund, I was charged a $1. More.. you can see from my picture that is not lean brisket. I don't think anyone could haven't eaten that Sandwich. Your staff knew I was upset, I set in the parking lot for a couple of minutes posting reviews. Thank you for getting back to me. read more

I'm currently on a cross country road trip in my rv. I've tried BBQ all across the country in all the best places. Needless to say I wasn't really expecting much from some hole in the wall mom and pop shop in the tiny town of Sonora Texas. Boy was I wrong. I had the pulled pork and sausage sandwich. It was phenomenal. They gave me regular sausage instead of jalapeño sausage as I ordered. They told me when they gave me my order that they made the mistake so they gave me both. Something they didn't need to do. They put love into their food. And it shows. Extremely friendly staff that I believe is a family. Do yourself a favor and eat here if you're ever in Sonora. As grandparents to kids playing sports, we're always looking for Friday night meals in small towns. Hubby and I decided to grab a bite at The Pit Stop on our way home. We took a chance with Pit Crew Nachos and boy are we glad. Chips covered with chopped brisket, jalapeño cheddar sausage slices, beans, cheese sauce, pico de gallo, and cilantro ranch. We shared the order and were stuffed. All the things I've eaten here are delicious. Order at the counter, food comes quickly. Building is smallish, but clean. Fountain drinks and tea are self serve. There is an outdoor eating area, but traffic is loud so eat in or order to go. Quick exit off I-10 on 277S. It's worth the time for this bbq. read more

Many of them had a specialty: one reliably fried her chicken juicy, crunchy, and golden-brown; another made buttermilk biscuits that were always flaky, layered, and tender, with a subtle, tangy flavor and a rich, buttery taste; yet another baked exceptionally delicate, intensely-flavored coconut cakes; etc. I was taught and encouraged by these ladies - my Meemaw and my aunts - to manage a kitchen, and, to this day, their influence abides. My father was a restaurant man, but at home, he, my grandfather, and my uncles, all of whom would've called themselves "traditional", mostly limited their culinary efforts to food they could prepare outside. From an early age, these men taught me to work with grills and smokers, which is to say that as soon as I was strong enough, I was put to work, hauling wood before a cook and clearing ashes afterwards. And that was as close as I got to cooking with the men, until one special day, when, at 10 years old, my Uncle Buddy allowed me to baste the hog as it spun on the spit. It was another three years before I was permitted to poke the fire. Cooking, for the men, was guided by custom and tradition, a set of rituals that they'd learned from their elders. They didn't prevent my participation because they didn't trust my talent; they just hadn't finished teaching me yet. But eventually, I earned my place by the fire, and, having proved myself capable, I was entrusted with special tasks of increasing importance: grilling meats (a throwaway - kid's play - in the men's eyes); making basting sauce - the "mop" - or what some call barbecue sauce; and, in my late teens, assisting with the butchery. In the decades that followed, I traveled the United States, trying dozens of local BBQ variants. I won't criticize the barbecue of places that don't do it well, but I will say that if you're going to make the stuff and charge money for it, maybe go see how it's done in Memphis and eastern North Carolina, where my favorite types of "Q" come from. Don't just light a fire and open for business; learn something first. At home, I've owned several smokers, and I've made and eaten a lot of a LOT of BBQ. I use pecan (or a pecan/cherry mix) when I want the taste of the thing I'm smoking to stand out, or when there's not much meat to the bite. Ribs, fish, and special dishes like pizza and involtini get the light smoke. I use hickory or oak when I want an old-school BBQ flavor, or when the cut I'm cooking is large enough that it won't smoke all the way through. Those woods make excellent pork shoulder, prime rib, and leg of lamb. The one wood I won't smoke with is mesquite. Never again. The few times I used it, my food tasted the way country air smells in the summer, when road crews get to resurfacing the County road. But I know that the problem is me, because one day, a while back, I ate outstanding mesquite-smoked BBQ at Lum's in Junction, TX. That morning, I'd left Luling for Van Horn, and, since I'd missed the more famous spots in the Houston area, I was set on finding a decent plate of BBQ before I left the state. Yelp and TripAdvisor said Lum's was a good choice, which gave me hope that the place would have what I wanted. I walked in, happy to note that Lum's was not so much a "restaurant" as a "dining hall," the sort of place that serves a basic menu to lots of people, quickly and without complication. You grab a tray, shuffle down the line, choosing from a meat (or two or three) and a couple of sides, a drink and maybe a sweet treat to finish. Park yourself in a comfortable chair at a heavy wooden table, and get to eatin'. The menu board offered brisket, turkey, pork ribs, pulled pork, pork loin, and sausage. There was chicken, too, but that's not why I was there. The sides included something called "Spicy Spaghetti" which, had I been sticking around, I'd definitely have tried, but pasta wasn't on my short-list of Things To Eat In Texas' Hill Country. I picked brisket (because Texas), pulled pork and ribs, and sides of potato and cucumber salads. My plate came with white bread. And with my feast, I drank sweet tea, as God intended. What did I miss? The spaghetti, and sausage, and pinto beans and mac 'n cheese. Next time. The meats were expertly done: tender, moist, not greasy, and they'd been handled carefully by the pit master, so that the seasoning hadn't been knocked off as they were shifted from smoker to service line. Before I left, I paid my respects to one of the owners and asked what sort of wood he uses, as I couldn't quite identify the smoky flavor. I was surprised when he said, "Mesquite... we're surrounded by it!" There was no acrid, creosote-y bitterness; instead, the flavor was smooth, savory, and delicious. Lum's showed me that mesquite can work. But not at my house; I just don't have the touch.

The guy behind the counter seemed a little cranky but he wasn't rude, the woman grabbing our sides and the girl who rang us up were super sweet. I had high hopes for Pit Stop BBQ, but unfortunately, my visit left a lot to be desired. My baked potato was missing butter, and despite specifically requesting no sour cream, it came covered in it. That's a basic order detail that shouldn't be missed. To make things worse, the 3-meat platter I ordered didn't include the sausage I selected, just completely left out. The brisket was also underwhelming and lacked the bold, smoky flavor you expect from a good BBQ joint. The one bright spot was the creamed corn, it was genuinely tasty.
