We came on a Friday and it was lively - people ready to have a good time and a great meal. I had the KC steak for one, which turned out to be a generous portion of NY Strip; excellently prepared to a medium rare. My wife had the steak salad. I am a Texas girl born and raised! Starting with that statement, my favorite meal is Chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans and a bucket of white gravy drowning in black pepper. They had a variety of sized, small, med and large. I went with med! A good CFS, has steak all the way to the end of the crust #1. Crispy fried #2, juicy #3 and a bit of spice in every bite! They met all the marks exceptfor the bite of spice!!!! The CFS was served hot off the skillet. The other items were hot as well. It was large, I can't imagine what the large was like. The vegetables were not a hit. The green beans were unseasoned, and tasted like a can variety, although they had ham in them. One thing I have learned about restaurants is that they cater to their crowd, it looked like many locals passing through. Perhaps less spice was the flavor! Overall food was good and plentiful. I enjoy establishments like the Hitchin' Post. Not pretentious, just a nice hometown gathering place to enjoy some good, simple homestyle food. Wife had "the best she'd had" chicken fried steak. Son had some fried chicken strips. I had the hamburger steak (it was okay) Portions were rather large. Perhaps due to dry county laws, you had to pay $5 to order a drink but could have up to three guests for a 6 month club membership. No biggy. I've stopped here more than a few times over the years, but this place seems to be going downhill. It's got everything I hate about TexASS under one roof! The food is average, the service is average, just about the dumbest customers you'll ever see going out to eat after church , and an owner that trains their staff to deny water to a service animal! In fact, the waitress actually had to nerve to tell me "that if I'm even thinking about giving the dog any water, I'll have to do that outside!" We found this place while driving cross country via the Yelp. It was a cold wet night and as soon as we walked in the door, it felt like walking in to someone's home for a home-cooked meal. We ordered the country fried steak. It was large enough that we cut it in half and split it! It came with two sides so we each chose one: fried potatoes, and green beans. And I haven't even mentioned the country gravy! We heard live music coming from the front room. They also had two pool tables and a bar in that area. After dinner, we found ourselves wanting to enjoy some time with the locals and tourists alike. We had great service and incredible drinks along with our dinner. Probably more like a 3.5 Star review. The cheese curds are 5/5 - amazing taste, consistency; they didn't skimp out on quality of ingredients. Steak Sirloin steak was 3.5/5 - the flavors was there, but you can tell this was tenderized to be more tender. Also we asked for a medium rare and got medium to a juicy well done. So if you like your steaks a little on the rarer side, ask for as rare as you can get it. Sides - 2.5/5 - fries and green beans were nothing to rave about. The fried mushrooms and roasted potatoes are great. The chicken-fried steak seems overrated - lots of breading and gristle. Truly a local restaurant with a totally Texas vibe. Only "bar" in town. Does not have its' liquor license yet so it you want to order an alcoholic beverage you will need to pay $5 to join their "club" so they can serve you legally. Club fee is good for 6 months. Service was average - the bartender ended up taking care of our bill, since we had been waiting for our server for a while for it. Will go again, but will order some other entree. Service was good, but they charge an absurd $5 "membership fee" to order a beer. I got the steak salad which was beautifully presented, but the steak was tough and marinated to the point which made me wonder if it were old. The taste was "off" for me. My partner got the Gourmet Chicken Fried Steak, which, of course was good as it was fried and came with a side of gravy. I mean, deep fried anything is good if smothered. The highlight was the fried okra and the mashed potatoes. They come out with a handheld credit card machine with no itemization, which is always suspect. 35 dollars for a sirloin, potato and veggies? The prices are outrageous for what you're getting. I took an order to-go as I was passing through and was not impressed. I requested the steak to be medium-rare, instead I got near well-done. The potato still had fragments of foil on it and the juices from the veggies they gave me had saturated the steak. Not only was the steak poorly cooked, the flavors just weren't great either; seemed as if they marinated it in some type of Italian seasoning. Driving up to the place it is a bit of an eyesore. My son was like "I don't think we should eat here." I shared with him that they have good reviews and that the portions would meet his needs, LOL (he's a teenager). You walk in and it is very rustic. You seat yourself. We were greater very quickly and our order was put in within 10 minutes of arrival. We came on a Friday around 6:30 pm. We had our food within 20 minutes of it being placed. The portion sizes are large. You can tell the meets are fresh as stated in their menu. The beef is cut fresh and ground fresh for the burgers. My preteen daughter said the burger she got was the best burger she ever had. My son said he was glad we stayed. His steak fingers were delicious. The chicken fingers (seen in the picture) was very good. The batter was light and crunchy and the chicken very moist. My husband had the country fried steak and said it was very delicious! The waitstaff were pleasant and kind. They have a separate area for the bar. Everyone loved the food. I would definitely return if I'm ever back in the area. read more

The service was super friendly and attentive. We ordered the double X burger and country-fried steak. The burger had two cheeses, jalapeños and all the fixing. It was well made and filling. Decided to come to Hitchin' Post Steakhouse since I'm here for work and I can say the experience was great! It's self seating and you also need to buy a membership to drink alcohol. The good thing is it lasts for 3 days and can bring up to 3 guests. I asked the waitress why it was needed and she was very informative and said it was to be able to drink on the premises, which I never heard of in Texas but it's only 5 dollars so no need to cry about it. Now for the food! It was very delicious!! I had the British burger which is a specialty here and no complaints! Full of flavor! My co-worker had the sirloin steak which is 1lb by the way for 26 dollars!! Good deal! And was cooked as preferred to him! Only complaint was the mashed potatoes not having much flavor!! The British Burger. You have to try the British burger. It's outstanding, delicious, and damn-near perfect. One of the best burgers I've ever had. Easily in the top 5 of my all time favorite burgers. The beef is incredibly fresh with just the right amount of fat. I swear they must have killed that cow earlier in the day. Two layers of cheese (Munster and Gouda I believe). Perfectly done bacon and some mystery sauce that is exceptional. Friendly service with fun atmosphere. This is definitely the place to stop at in this part of the Texas.
