Damn. Double Damn. Really good eats! Hubs n I got the signature chicken n biscuits, him The Reggie and I the McIsley, cue pickles, mustard n honey, man oh man! What make this a yum eat is unlike a lot of other chicken places their chicken is lightly breaded and you get a hearty piece of meat but most of all the chicken is not greasy!!! ...So you don't feel bad eating the massive biscuit. So some places say they make good biscuits but these guys really do make a good one. It's heavy enough to hold the weight of the chicken n fixings yet not dry and hard. It's also good to eat on its own without the fixings. My hubby loved the gravy on his Reggie and contrary to some reviews thought it was enough gravy to get him through his whole experience. The kid serving us was polite and helpful. It was topped with house slaw, which uses a vinegar base. I like that. It was crunchy and flavorful. The biscuit itself was a little disappointing. It was too thick and the bottom slice was mushy from the pork and slaw. It wasn't as buttery and flaky as I would have liked. The lines, while not long, were slow. I used to love this place. However, over the years the food has become just mediocre. I ordered the Reggie Delux this morning. The chicken was overdone and dry and it looked like I got about two tablespoons of gravy. I noticed a long time ago they were being pretty stingy with the gravy but it's gotten so bad now that I had to order an extra side of it just so that I could enjoy my meal. A small side of gravy... $2.50, making my meal $20 (which included my $4 coffee). I asked for a sample (thinking along the license of a small teaspoon) of the mushroom gravy because I just wanted to know what it tasted like in the event that I wanted to order that on my next trip...$2.50 was tacked on to my bill which I declined the "sample". So happy that I made this place a priority on my Portland food adventure. After taking a tour of Creo Chocolate, my date and I walked across the street for lunch. The "Reggie" did not disappoint. The chicken was fried fresh and the shiitake mushroom gravy was AMAZING! (I love mushrooms!) Of course the real highlight of the meal was the biscuit. In my short stay in Portland, this was one of the two restaurants that I tried and the reason is, this place not only had great ratings on Yelp and Google, but the locals I talked to also highly recommended me to check this place out. I came on a Saturday a little bit before lunch time. I think it was about 11:45 when I got there. There was no line and I was able to immediately walk up to the counter. The cashier who was working there was super friendly and answered all the questions I had and helped me decide what I wanted to get - The Reggie Deluxe. I also ordered a side of 'small' hash brown to go along with my biscuit sandwich. The cashier gave me a number and told me that someone would bring the food out to me. The dining room is small and is shared between Pine State Biscuits and Sizzle Pie Pizza. Despite the small dining room, however, I noticed that people would constantly come and go and nobody really stayed around too long, which made finding a place to sit down easy. I sat at the bar-height table facing the line and what do you know? After I had placed my order, people came in bunches and formed a pretty long line. The line, however, moved quickly. When they brought out my meal, I was pretty surprised with the size of my sandwich; but more especially my hash brown. The sandwich was tall and definitely looked delicious. The 'small' hash brown, however, was a plateful. Definitely not what I was expecting. Kinda made me wonder how much would you get if I had ordered the large? After my sandwich had been brought out, a few people in line actually commented about how good they thought my sandwich looked. Definitely a win for the cashier for recommending that. But we all know, just because something looks good doesn't mean that it will be good. However, once I started eating them butter, meaty, eggy, cheesy sandwich, especially when I put some sausage gravy; it was like me oh my, bless your heart! It was so good. We made an amazing impulse choice to come here for brunch today. Noticing they have several locations, we figured it couldn't be bad. The location we stopped at is like a mini food court with windows to order and shared seating for Pine State Biscuits and Sizzle Pie. When you walk in just jump in line and check out the menu while you wait. Hey have menus by the door for your viewing. Honestly everything looked good so I don't think you can go wrong. We decided on the Chatfield and the Reggie biscuit sandwiches. The Reggie seems to be a popular choice, and for good reason, but both were great. The Reggie is definitely savory and the Chatfield slightly sweet due to the apple butter. It was kind of like a spin off on chicken and waffles. When we ordered we were thinking we should get it to go because the seating area was packed but the cashier insured us that a seat would be open by the time our food came out, and it was. I would love to give this place 5 stars but I felt rushed to go when I was done so I could give my seat to someone else. I grew up in a southern town so biscuits and gravy was essential. How every, this place does more than just biscuits and gravy and they do it so well! Let's start with just a simple egg, cheese and bacon biscuit. The biscuit itself is flaky, airy but still has some weight to it so it's not just going to crumble under your fork. I could eat the biscuit by itself so that was a plus. Good thing I had tons of chewy bacon and cheese to help me! This biscuit, simple and plain compared to their others, was delightful and I would order again. Now you can go for the Mac daddy of biscuits and get their biscuit with fried chicken, fried egg, cheese, bacon and cover it all in sausage gravy! Now that is a biscuit and let me tell you they do it right! I could have just spoon fed myself the gravy. They also do a solid Bloody Mary here. First, you line up to place your order and once you receive a number, you can THEN grab a seat and they will bring your food to you. Don't be the jerk that sits down to hold a table while your buddies are waiting in line to order. The small space is also shared with Sizzle Pies - delicious lookin' pizza. This is not the spot to bring a large group or if you are in a hurry. I have to commend the cold brew here. It is potent, dark, and delicious! And you can order a large jar of it but unless you guzzle heapings of cold brew all day long, I do not suggest it! My husband I love cold brew but regret not getting the smaller size, or at least sharing the large order. The Reggie Deluxe is a glorious, towering sandwich of fried chicken, bacon, cheese sandwiched between biscuits and doused with gravy. You can choose between sausage or mushroom gravy. It was a heavy meal and nothing remedies a morning hangover better than this sandwich. However, with biscuits in the name of this restaurant, I thought it'd be more delicious or mind-blowing. But it tasted like decent biscuits that I've had at other places. The hash ups are a must-order. When we placed an order for the hash ups with smoked brisket, we were told they are backed up on hash ups since it was so popular and it would come much later than our Reggie Deluxe. We decided we would still go ahead and once placed in front of us, I marveled in its glory for a few minutes. Golden, crispy shredded potatoes topped with grilled onions, mushrooms, cheddar cheese, and thick slices of smoked brisket. It also could not have been cooked more perfectly. Charred and crispy on the outside with warm, fluffy potatoes on the inside. By far, THE BEST hash browns I've ever had. This is a solid breakfast place. Multiple times now I have ordered online, been given a pick up time 30-40 minutes later, I show up at the correct pick up time and THEN I end up waiting 20-30 Minutes AFTER the pickup time. Someone recommended that I try Pine State Biscuits while visiting Portland and lucky for me, there are multiple locations and one was close by to me. The space is shared with a Sizzle Pie. Small location, not much seating. The worker wasn't super friendly, didn't seem like she wanted to be there. I just got a single biscuit with butter and strawberry jam. It was actually really good, fluffy and hearty. It came out warm, making it extra tasty. They have other sandwiches using their biscuits like a chicken sandwich and breakfast sandwiches. So this spot is doing take out only at the moment, the wait was about 30 minutes and inside is at a 10 person capacity. When we had got our food it was missing the side of Cajun fries, but when I went in to get them, they had it ready. A simple mistake of just forgetting to put it in the bag. Since it was take out only, and we were just visiting Portland, we had ate in our car. Some random man came knocking on our window and asking for something, then he just stood there? A very odd situation, the location was not favorable but we had already checked out of our hotel. The food was amazing! My friends and I were planning to try this place but we were running late and they close at 3 pm. My friend called to order 3 Reggie's to go and we got there at 3 pm exactly and got our order. I was so happy and relieved we got to try this place since we're from out of town. The biscuit was melt in your mouth delicious. The fried chicken was okay. I wasn't too impressed with the meat but it was good. The staff was also really friendly and didn't even lock up the outside benches until we left. They also let us drink their water even though they close at 3pm and we came a little later. This place is popular for a reason and they have the best biscuit I've ever had. $9 for a really big wet sandwich too. The gravy was also really tasty. The food is pretty good but they either take a zillion years to get your order ready or they get the order wrong or BOTH. The Beignets and the snickerdoodle cookies were over cooked and they didn't put any dressing on my biscuit sandwich both times I ordered one. So this wasn't an isolated incident. I ordered for pick up from the store on Division and the note said my order would be ready at 9:45am, that's great right! But Noooo. I waited in the bitter cold for my order for 25 minutes after I was told it would be ready. Tue staff were unsympathetic and unhelpful. I called in and placed a to-go order, since we were coming back from a waterfall bus tour (I expected this place to have a long wait with no seating) and this place happened to be near one of the drop-off locations. It wasn't too busy at all though on MLK day around noon. But since we had called in our to-go order, they didn't let us sit and eat there. I can see why there are negative reviews regarding the attitude of workers, etc. For that reason, I give them 4 stars, even though the food itself was really good. We ended up eating our food on the bus on the ride back to downtown. The Moneyball ($7.50) - This comes with pretty big biscuit smothered in gravy and topped with an over easy egg. I got their shiitake mushroom gravy and it was SOOO good. It's not as heavy compared to regular gravy sauces, but it's packed with flavor. Hash Ups ($7.00) - I also shared the Hash Ups with my friend, which is delicious crispy hash browns topped with onions, mushrooms, and cheese. I liked that the onion was cut pretty thinly and cooked til it was almost caramelized and soft, super good with the crispy hash browns! I was born and raised in the US south so I'm pretty picky about this dish but I thought Pine State executed it really well. I ordered the Reggie. The gravy is very delicious and generously poured over the dish. The chicken was crispy yet juicy. I thought the biscuit was a bit dry but that's my only food complaint. My only other complaint is that this place has difficulty supporting its own popularity. The seating inside is kind of a nightmare - Pine State shares the (super small) space with a pizza shop and both restaurants see a good amount of customers. Battling for a spot at a booth or table is pretty impossible if your group is large. Pine State also ran out of silverware while we were there and the employees weren't able to wash them fast enough to keep up with demand. Trying to cut/eat my Reggie with a plastic fork was extremely difficult and messy. read more

This is definitely one of my go-to places in Portland, and I've made it a point to visit at least once whenever I'm in town. I'm a big fan of The Moneyball with sausage gravy, although the mushroom gravy is very good as well! The only thing I don't super love about this place is how small it is. Depending on the time of day, it can be really hard to find a place to sit; if you're visiting from out of town, you might not have the option to get your food to-go and just eat in your car. A local favorite, a visitor's must try when in Portland. On the weekends lines are out the door but moves pretty quickly. After browsing the menu I noticed something that caught my eye, "The Chatfield". Seeing as how it's my last name I obviously had to order it. I opted to get a side of sausage gravy on the side to be able to try and add on which was a good addition because it was a little dry. The cheese could have also been a bit more melted. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time and is a fairly good portion (my boyfriend and I split). The apple butter was sweet and lend itself well to the flavors but I thought the gravy was what made the meal. This is the first time I've gotten food from this location. The only reason I chose it was because it was the closest on the way back from the airport. Pine State is one of my favorite restaurants to eat for biscuits, so naturally I believed this (and all locations) to be good. I ordered from one of the middle men sites (Grubhub) when I left the airport and was quoted 30-40 minutes. I arrived 25 minutes later in front of the building, waiting for them to say my food was finished. About 10 minutes later it was ready for pickup and I grabbed my food. In the notes I asked for silverware, received none. Mind you I decided to eat in the car so the food didn't get cold. Went back for silverware, opened chicken sandwich and it was cold. Batter falling off of the chicken, and not much gravy. My friend ordered the moneyball and that was warm. I've never had an issue with this place but I am highly disappointed at the state of my food. This is unacceptable, especially when the food was supposedly just finished being made. I wouldn't recommend this spot in particular and hope my usual spot is still up to standards. read more

I ordered a build your own biscuit and got cheese, egg and bacon. I also ordered a side of shiitake mushroom gravy which sounded pretty good. I was not blown away. In fact I thought this place's biscuits were actually pretty mediocre. The bacon was thin and crispy and the egg was cooked just fine but I didn't even end up eating the entire biscuit because I simply didn't want to.
